  • Just saw in Daytona..... Age got him, but we had all had fun.

  • Going to see Gordon this evening in Dallas

  • Drake's canadian.....Justin Bieber is canadian too..... NEITHER ARE AS GOOD AS HIM though...

  • SModcast made it impossible for me to listen to this without laughing my ass off. Still, Gordon is awesome. One of the best from the Great White North.

  • What year was this?

  • Gordon you are my second hero my husband is the first. My husband Joe Bulger sang with you many years ago at your home in Toronto. You have been a huge inspiration in his music career. You really impressed him.....the type of man you are.Maureen.Check Joe out on you tube

  • hi

  • cold case sent me

  • One of the best, if not the best singer/songwriters of all time. Thank you Gordon!

  • Love him so much...One of my musical heros. Every singer/songwriter and upcoming acoustic guitar player needs to listen to him. Buy and study all of his albums - especially the first dozen or so. You won't regret it. I wish these guys could live forever. Bless you Gordon.

  • The sad thing is as these artists leave us there is no one to replace them. Treasure it while you can.......

  • A Canadian icon, and one of greatest lyricol and melodic talents ever. Brings tears to my eyes eveytime I hear this classic. Keep on makin music Gord......we love you and your work!!

  • My freshman year in college when this song came out...

  • I live in orillia, where he was born!

  • john holmes

  • OMG 3+ Million views, WOW. Totally amazed at the views of a great singer/songwriter. In todays junk garbage techno crap that is being force fed to our youth this just blows me away. THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG. I love his gravelly voice on this one. So appropriate for such a heart breaking song. This version brings tears to my eyes. Everyone who has had a breakup of a loved one in their lifetime can relate so much to this song. THANK YOU SO MUCH GORDON. You truely are a shinning star.

  • @LesSmith45 All I can say to this is .. HERE HERE!!! Also brings tears to my eyes. I am currently in that position with someone I have been with for 7 years. She sees me as "that ghost". So this song has a good meaning for me at the moment. I agree ... this "gravelly" version shows that these singers from this era .. can still reproduce a number like this so many years later, without the help of electronics.

  • @gemini5865 sorry to hear about your pain. Keep your chin up things will get better. Even if it doesnt feel that way now. Thanks for the reply

  • Love that song...

  • beautiful song...

  • I will never be set free, as long as im a ghost you cant see...

  • who cares we all get old lets see how u can sing at his age he is the best we love him Canada is his home n we are his family so to you n gord ur aewsome i love your music n im 42 yrs old he still can make me wanna get up n giver

  • Wonderland.... perfect song for the ending.

  • God bless Canada....but he is looking really old..but that is ok..last of the best of song writers...we need them.

  • ........I AM FALLING......

  • ......i am falling apart

  • First time i've heard it in years,it hasn't got any better cause it could't get any better.Tish

  • What a cracker of a song from a songsmith supreme. Well done Gordon....love your talent BUT the very best version of this beautiful song is by Crystal Gayle.

  • This is one of my favorites...

  • Gordon Lightfoot V's Gerry Rafferty?!?!?!

  • love gordon - nothing takes me back to my radio 2 childhood more . thanks dom joly -you're a dick but you did give me this again xxx

  • Wow. I've heard this song hundreds of times in my 43 years. The lyrics hit me the other day so I looked up Gordon Lightfoot. WOW. Never knew he sang all the other songs I've loved. I now wait for his songs on my ol

  • My mom had Gord's Gold on vinyl in the 70's, and I fell in love with his writing. His singing is a little nasal, but nonetheless great music. There was a house music version of this song called stars on 54 that's also just out of this world. Love this song, and I'm a hip hop head!

  • Fantastic song! Probably my all-time favourite. But Gordon has written so many wonderful songs...some of them were never even released as singles. All his albums are finely crafted sequences of song.

  • This man and Harry Chapin had the gift for telling a story in a song. I am so glad I was 18 in 1974 because the standard of music today is pathetic. My son and daughter listen to rap and believe that it is telling a story. I weep for the future.

  • @Trajan730 Be careful or you'll end up like an old man saying "What's that rubbish?" to anything post 70s! I don't care for rap either but neither do I like Sockhausen; there is music out there for everyone. There are some great contemporary musicians - Florence & The Machine, Adele, Duffy, KT Tunstall to name but a few so open your mind and ears!!!

Gordon is a great wordsmith and this song is timeless, it can be sung by any artist in any era and it will still have the same emotional impact.

  • *I meant Stockhausen, excuse the typo

  • Thumbs up if you first heard this song on Trigger Happy TV!

  • If tears were sticks and likes were bricks this song could reach the stars ;)

  • Some songs......defy explanation......and cross over into the land of sublime perfection....you can't put your finger on why exactly.....mixture of music, lyrics, artist.....this is one of those songs. Just perfect.

  • Beautiful, Beautiful song. Don't know how anyone could dislike this, it must be in our wiring to find this beautiful.

  • Amazing

  • amazing song and lyrics! - so deep and profound thank you gordon bless you

  • Kde jsem to jenom slyšel :-)

  • I cannot think or a greater songwriter than Gordon Lightfoot. Townes Van Zandt was incredible for sure. There have been so many other great songwriters, but this man is so amazing. He paints a picture with his words that is truly special.

  • Yep..... What LadyAvish said....

  • This song breaks my heart and makes me think of all the things in my life didn't go quite the way I had planned. Particularly the men.

  • 2 words:pure talent.

  • There has to be something seriously wrong in the head of anyone who could listen to this song and then hit the dislike button. I would like to hope they were drunk and hit it by mistake. That's the only explanation.

  • This song makes me all tingly. It's kind of weird, but cool.

  • Canadian national treasure.

  • One of the best Canadian song writers? How about one of the best song writers ever and i am not Canadian. PURE GOLD

  • @pistoljock AGREED!! From Scotland. Amazing song that never gets old.

  • gordon your awsome

  • Hadn't heard this song until someone shared with me - moving song. kx

  • Awesome...a little erie canal even...chills...great work great artist

  • he rules.

  • Happy B-Day Mr. Lightfoot....

  • happy birthday, gordon!

  • Gordon Lightfoot: one of the great Canadian songwriters..

  • Gordon Lightfoot: one of the greatest American folksingers of the 20th century.

  • @malt50 canadian

  • @rylanbernard Is that all you can come up with? Here's a few more for you - american, mexican, russian, serbian, african, chinese, australian, etc.

  • Can you please pass this message on to Gordon Lightfoot? I attended his concert last night at Flint Center in Cupertino with my parents(my second time seeing him in concert and my parents' first time) and they absolutely loved it. Gordon Lightfoot is highly respected composer and a musician as well as a beautiful human being. I enjoyed his concert tremendously. I also appreciated seeing him in concert for the second time.

  • He lost the vocal range but still has the magic. I saw Him last night 11/8/11

  • cool i cant beleve your related!!!

  • As mentioned in an earlier post-I saw him in concert in Sept 2011, his voice was about the same as is shown in this video. Has had some health issues in the past decade and is also celebrating another birthday in November.

  • muy buena cancion, es un clasico

  • this guy's my cousin. I have singing in my blood. just kidding i suck at singing.. but we're related :)

  • Such a wonderful song and story - I've loved this all my life but only now am I understanding the lyric. You really have to sit and listen to this one to fully grasp its beauty. Sadly it's taken me quite a while to do this, but now that I have, I have been enriched. :)

  • what song is it where he says "he is an artist" and hes basically talking in the song? any one know?

  • I don't know where we went wrong, but the feeling's gone, and I just can't get it back....So simple yet one of the greatest lyrics ever written

  • Amazing! I love Gordon's music. Hard to find anything as soul touching.

  • just plain beautiful

  • im sick of adverts.........

  • He had an aortic aneurysm in 2002, he was in a coma for several months. Took him til 2004 to return to the stage. I just saw him in concert in Sept of 2011, was in good voice and in good spirits, singing his hits and engaging the crowd.

  • Just curious, I haven't seem him since 1971; has he lost his deep voice? If so, do you know what the story is? He is coming in concert this month in L.A. and am tempted to see him. I used to cover his music (as if anyone could).

  • @jelyng I may not believe in god but that doesn't mean I don't have a heart in fact we all do and my hurt is telling me to make you Liston to this sond really Liston to the words Stan bush-dare or Stan bush touch don't skip the video

  • This man is a poet

  • I actually don't want that feeling again - I have been a ghost since I was born, hasn't changed much fifty years on..

  • @jelyng My Heavens, don't Feel that way. We are all "loved" & "liked" by Someone.

Lots of Time, We just don't know it.

  • @desert3347

Fifty years of use and abuse no matter how I have tried to keep too many happy shows how much I am the White Spirit my first name means.

Blamed for much from a very young age - now solo after raising 3 kids, n a grandchild for 3.5 yrs. Now being blamed and abused by more so called family.

No trust or faith left except for more pain, physical and emotional.

Likedor 'loved' to be used, abused and SPAT out.

One friend, a long way away..

Ex never was.. too self obsessed.

  • @jelyng You should probably attempt to surround yourself with better people. I grrew up in a place that sounds horrible, South africa, full of violence and rape etc. I still managed to have a great childhood just because of the beautiful people I surround myself with. Most of the people in this world are good and your outlook on life will always be based on the people you know. You probably have lived around useless people for so long that you have lost your faith in humanity.

  • @andrewkeen24 Wow! Your statement is "Profound". You Comment is right on.

My heart hurts for this person who's life seems to full of dispair. I hope he understands our comments are to "help him" up from his situation.

I have had to let Friends & Family Go. They are in my past &I think that is what this person needs

    to do also..

  • @jelyng Leave Behind Past Problems, & people. Find other ways to bring "yourself" out of the

depts of dispair! It can be done!! Do Not Give up!!

  • His lyrics are great, but I can't really understand his voice

  • @Villageiddyit The video is misleading: the song's from 1970, but the performance is much more recent. He underwent a tracheotomy, which explains the voice.

  • @usernamewasteland Oh that explains it! thanks very much sir or mam! rock on GLF!

  • This is such a haunting, beautiful song. I love it. I like to listen to it when I'm a bit down because of its eeriness.

  • This guy gets better as he ages. This song always put a tear in my eye after a break up. Epic

  • Lord God. Best.

  • I love jazz and blues etc. but Gordon I will always listen to.

  • from Orillia ontario !!

  • I have been a Lightfoot fan for 35 years and this cat can still sing. His voice has not changed much at all.

  • 98 listeners don´t know where they went wrong.....

  • got love it

  • Gordon what a genius

  • THE WORDS JUST SEEM TO FLOW ON & ON & ON !

  • somehow, with images of when he was young and now this summons up pure life and emotion of universal experience.

  • "Just like an old time movie, the kind with a ghost in a wishing well" -The Ring anyone?

  • :O Hes My Cosin In Return Or Something Like That LOl BUt Hes In MY Blood <3

  • Man i love all sorts of music, especially speed metal but this song chokes me up bad!

  • I absolutely love this man and his ability to write and sing such expressive songs, that really touch ppl. Also is such a great strory teller with 'wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald'!!

  • A song to get back so many memories while I were so young

yes, hero will be me, but heros often failed.

  • Tainted with a facebook advertisement....

  • Thank you mr. lightfoot

You always have and always give me a light heart

  • This was her favorite song; I'll miss you.

  • A national treasure

  • I don't care what anyone says...he is slightly different after the surgery, but still quite masterful. Gordon...you're one of the best!!!

  • @BennynJune

    He was a true original.

  • great song writer something lacking today!!!

  • Okay, for those who say 95% of the artists today couldn't do anything like this, I'd agree. In fact I'd say 99% of today's artists couldn't write anything so perfect or brilliant. But, don't forget: this song (and artist) was also better than 99% of what was produced back then too. There's lots of music being made today, from a wide variety of genres, that is great. Unfortunately radio is so micro-managed and driven by corporate control that it's tough to find. Seek it out.

  • Tin? Blow off dude. He is old and has the trained voice of one. Still he sings clear and damn fine. better than the sluts and twits today. Real voice and real music. He is a treasure. i only hope to see him live before he stops.

  • No disrespect intended, but Mr. Lightfoot's singing sounds a bit tinny and he can't hold the notes like he used to. I'm not sure if this is due to his advanced age or if it's a side affect of his aneurysm. What a shame.

  • With a little research, I've answered my own question: Lightfoot suffered a ruptured artery in his stomach in 2002 and now has an "inner abdominal binder" made up of muscle fibre from his leg. He also wears a girdle-type device around his abdomen.

  • Top Quality For wee yin x

  • Just saw him last night live and he showed me why I have always been a fan of his. At 72 he is still awesome and he out performs people half his age.

  • a great song for hard times ..

  • simply awesome

  • Simon le Bon (Duran Duran) wrote Save a Prayer because of this song.

  • Nobody but Gordon could do the song, words, sound and make someone feel this way more than fabulous.

    Muriel xxx Lester The Nightly2

  • In a castle dark, or a fortress strong

    With chains upon my feet

You know that ghost is me

And I will never be set free

As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see.

    I LOVE IT

  • @missSKgirl - This is a very rare versio nof this song...Every bit as emotional than a 1974 version..IF not more!!

  • I love him!!!! I'm 29. Loved him since I was 15.

  • I'm so proud of Gordon! I'm Canadian too :-) what a treasure

  • Gordon always makes you feel young again, music truly brings us back....

  • I've loved this song for years and never knew it was from a Canadian song writer. Thank you Gordon!

  • I had the great privilege of seeing him in concert two days ago!!! It was spectacular to hear him sing!!!!!!

  • Love this song. See you next sunday at Stir!!!!

  • One of the greatest songwriters ever. Songwriters of the nowadays could never produce anything with this much heart.

  • Classic.....95% of todays artist couldnt do anything like this.....that's the truth

  • Splendid song!

  • What a talented singer and song writer! Gordon, my hat is off to you! I wish you many more years of sharing your memories with us all!!!!

  • "I don't know where we went wrong but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back" -- this song totally stands the test of time --

  • good song

  • Great

  • What's wrong with Youtube?!? It's only counting my views!!!

  • thoughts...floating in space...may the one who inspired them ....find them ~ flowing back at him #5lines

  • Just saw him last night. Now age 71, with a couple health scares the past decade the voice was there for the most part. As he interacted with the audience and pointed out that was then and this is now he seemed in good spirits and sang one song after another, no breaks or screwing around for about an hour and a half. I got my money's worth.

  • I LOVE THESE LYRICS

  • they'll never write or sing songs like this again.

  • We all had heart and displayed our emotions, which have disappeared today. Another great musician, among the many.

  • Pure Canadian:)

  • this sounds like shit, but damn, still gotta love the guy

  • I remember when this song came over the radio -you could`nt get enough who was this Gordon Lightfoot then he just exploded all over the place with the best Canadian Contemporary solo player tunes -Right next to Burton Cummings - Two true Canadians .

  • Some of the best lyrics ive ever heard

  • honeydew7396...changes in times and peoples attitudes have changed too.nice too know that you appreciate music like i do.

  • Wahnsinnig viel Gefühl im Song. Wirklich was besonderes, auch für meine nur 31 Jahre. Sowas findet man Heute nur noch selten. Klasse!!!

  • ...I listened to this so much it became a part of my soul..

This haunting, song of pathos and words of lost love and sorrow is so real that it plays to everyone who has ever experienced that in their life...

Gordons voice is so smooth and is filled with such feeling it can bring tears..

He has earned his kudos and admiration. He truly is one of the greatest singers to ever grace us, not to mention the world..

  • America cant steal Gordon like they steal everything else. Basketball, apple pie and comedians...Does America have no shame? Anyway Gordo taught many new artists the deal. Wonder what happened to his buddy Red Shea (sp)

  • @Gaspastor Steal? Really? I prefer "embrace"... and I hope Americans never have shame in appreciating great Canadian songwriters like Gordon Lightfoot or Stan Rogers (RIP). It shows good taste, at least on the part of some.

And I'm sure most musicians, comedians etc. don't care what the nationality of their fans is... just that as artists, they are heard and perhaps remembered fondly...

  • Gordon Lightfoot writes introspective music. Imagine all of humanity feeling this kind of understanding and compassion for each other. This man wrote many songs like this. Good thing he switched from the piano. All of his own emotions for us to see and hear. Listen, and you will be better for it.

  • A true music classic from a truly classic musician.

  • it looks so sad, pure class ! :-) God bless this guy and America !

  • @TheEMS41

    he is CANADIAN

  • @lakrissha lol I know bit I`m US and we always say that god bless someone and America :-) you are from ?

  • @lakrissha what is the difference what nationality Gordon is?? There are 25 million great American singers and about 12 Canadians and you have to start pointing them out?? He is a great singer. Leave it at that brother.

  • @Joe6504

really 12 Canadian come on get with it bud what is the problem anyway

25 million omfg for real go back and look at your numbers hahahahaha

  • What a nice song. :-)

  • live so long GORDON, live long. thankyou god for giving this legend to us.

  • live so long GORDON, live long. thankyou god for giving this legend to us.

  • Every day this man walks the Earth is a blessing from God...

  • In this life great artist come and go. Thank goodness Gordon is still kicking.

  • Yea, I am so sorry thinking he was dead...I am a bad person...sorry

  • During my 45 years it seems like the passage of time has gone from one end of the spectrum to the other. As far back as I can remember, in a more simple time, I can remember running and playing all day w/o a care in the world. It seems like the world done got in a hurry and grew up. Most of the younger folks just aren't that friendly, which is sad. If I could have a wish, I'd wish everyone out there would just slow done and be more loving and caring

  • Truly a great Singer...shame that he died so young. Also, he is a good reason why people should not smoke. That stuff eat him alive in his latter years, as is evident in how he looks as he was singing this song.

  • @SoutharnBling Sir/Madame: Gordon is not young nor is he dead. He is very much alive and still touring. His touring schedule is easily accessable through the Internet (I tried to "paste" it here, but YouTube will not let me). Let us pray daily for all who are suffering from an addiction of any kind. Thank-you.

  • @SoutharnBling Actually, Google his name. He is still alive and performing at 72 years old.

  • I'm not a huge fan of folk music but there is something about Gordon Lightfoot's music that truly touches me. His voice and lyrics are...like @martinbarclay103 said "haunting and emotive."

  • Very nice, thank you for posting.

  • Canada has a long/strong history, and connection, with it's incredible singer song writers. We will sit quietly, and listen, to someone perform, with a voice and guitar or piano, and remember that evening, for the rest of our lives. These artists must always have a place to play. Whether , Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young or Dallas Green.

  • Tis brings back so many great memories when music wasw really music.

  • who the hells dislikes these videos, theres really no good reason for it
