OMG 3+ Million views, WOW. Totally amazed at the views of a great singer/songwriter. In todays junk garbage techno crap that is being force fed to our youth this just blows me away. THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG. I love his gravelly voice on this one. So appropriate for such a heart breaking song. This version brings tears to my eyes. Everyone who has had a breakup of a loved one in their lifetime can relate so much to this song. THANK YOU SO MUCH GORDON. You truely are a shinning star.
@LesSmith45 All I can say to this is .. HERE HERE!!! Also brings tears to my eyes. I am currently in that position with someone I have been with for 7 years. She sees me as "that ghost". So this song has a good meaning for me at the moment. I agree ... this "gravelly" version shows that these singers from this era .. can still reproduce a number like this so many years later, without the help of electronics.
who cares we all get old lets see how u can sing at his age he is the best we love him Canada is his home n we are his family so to you n gord ur aewsome i love your music n im 42 yrs old he still can make me wanna get up n giver
What a cracker of a song from a songsmith supreme. Well done Gordon....love your talent BUT the very best version of this beautiful song is by Crystal Gayle.
Wow. I've heard this song hundreds of times in my 43 years. The lyrics hit me the other day so I looked up Gordon Lightfoot. WOW. Never knew he sang all the other songs I've loved. I now wait for his songs on my ol
My mom had Gord's Gold on vinyl in the 70's, and I fell in love with his writing. His singing is a little nasal, but nonetheless great music. There was a house music version of this song called stars on 54 that's also just out of this world. Love this song, and I'm a hip hop head!
Fantastic song! Probably my all-time favourite. But Gordon has written so many wonderful songs...some of them were never even released as singles. All his albums are finely crafted sequences of song.
This man and Harry Chapin had the gift for telling a story in a song. I am so glad I was 18 in 1974 because the standard of music today is pathetic. My son and daughter listen to rap and believe that it is telling a story. I weep for the future.
@Trajan730 Be careful or you'll end up like an old man saying "What's that rubbish?" to anything post 70s! I don't care for rap either but neither do I like Sockhausen; there is music out there for everyone. There are some great contemporary musicians - Florence & The Machine, Adele, Duffy, KT Tunstall to name but a few so open your mind and ears!!!
Gordon is a great wordsmith and this song is timeless, it can be sung by any artist in any era and it will still have the same emotional impact.
Some songs......defy explanation......and cross over into the land of sublime perfection....you can't put your finger on why exactly.....mixture of music, lyrics, artist.....this is one of those songs. Just perfect.
I cannot think or a greater songwriter than Gordon Lightfoot. Townes Van Zandt was incredible for sure. There have been so many other great songwriters, but this man is so amazing. He paints a picture with his words that is truly special.
There has to be something seriously wrong in the head of anyone who could listen to this song and then hit the dislike button. I would like to hope they were drunk and hit it by mistake. That's the only explanation.
Can you please pass this message on to Gordon Lightfoot? I attended his concert last night at Flint Center in Cupertino with my parents(my second time seeing him in concert and my parents' first time) and they absolutely loved it. Gordon Lightfoot is highly respected composer and a musician as well as a beautiful human being. I enjoyed his concert tremendously. I also appreciated seeing him in concert for the second time.
As mentioned in an earlier post-I saw him in concert in Sept 2011, his voice was about the same as is shown in this video. Has had some health issues in the past decade and is also celebrating another birthday in November.
Such a wonderful song and story - I've loved this all my life but only now am I understanding the lyric. You really have to sit and listen to this one to fully grasp its beauty. Sadly it's taken me quite a while to do this, but now that I have, I have been enriched. :)
He had an aortic aneurysm in 2002, he was in a coma for several months. Took him til 2004 to return to the stage. I just saw him in concert in Sept of 2011, was in good voice and in good spirits, singing his hits and engaging the crowd.
Just curious, I haven't seem him since 1971; has he lost his deep voice? If so, do you know what the story is? He is coming in concert this month in L.A. and am tempted to see him. I used to cover his music (as if anyone could).
@jelyng I may not believe in god but that doesn't mean I don't have a heart in fact we all do and my hurt is telling me to make you Liston to this sond really Liston to the words Stan bush-dare or Stan bush touch don't skip the video
Fifty years of use and abuse no matter how I have tried to keep too many happy shows how much I am the White Spirit my first name means.
Blamed for much from a very young age - now solo after raising 3 kids, n a grandchild for 3.5 yrs. Now being blamed and abused by more so called family.
No trust or faith left except for more pain, physical and emotional.
@jelyng You should probably attempt to surround yourself with better people. I grrew up in a place that sounds horrible, South africa, full of violence and rape etc. I still managed to have a great childhood just because of the beautiful people I surround myself with. Most of the people in this world are good and your outlook on life will always be based on the people you know. You probably have lived around useless people for so long that you have lost your faith in humanity.
@Villageiddyit The video is misleading: the song's from 1970, but the performance is much more recent. He underwent a tracheotomy, which explains the voice.
I absolutely love this man and his ability to write and sing such expressive songs, that really touch ppl. Also is such a great strory teller with 'wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald'!!
Okay, for those who say 95% of the artists today couldn't do anything like this, I'd agree. In fact I'd say 99% of today's artists couldn't write anything so perfect or brilliant. But, don't forget: this song (and artist) was also better than 99% of what was produced back then too. There's lots of music being made today, from a wide variety of genres, that is great. Unfortunately radio is so micro-managed and driven by corporate control that it's tough to find. Seek it out.
Tin? Blow off dude. He is old and has the trained voice of one. Still he sings clear and damn fine. better than the sluts and twits today. Real voice and real music. He is a treasure. i only hope to see him live before he stops.
No disrespect intended, but Mr. Lightfoot's singing sounds a bit tinny and he can't hold the notes like he used to. I'm not sure if this is due to his advanced age or if it's a side affect of his aneurysm. What a shame.
With a little research, I've answered my own question: Lightfoot suffered a ruptured artery in his stomach in 2002 and now has an "inner abdominal binder" made up of muscle fibre from his leg. He also wears a girdle-type device around his abdomen.
Just saw him last night. Now age 71, with a couple health scares the past decade the voice was there for the most part. As he interacted with the audience and pointed out that was then and this is now he seemed in good spirits and sang one song after another, no breaks or screwing around for about an hour and a half. I got my money's worth.
I remember when this song came over the radio -you could`nt get enough who was this Gordon Lightfoot then he just exploded all over the place with the best Canadian Contemporary solo player tunes -Right next to Burton Cummings - Two true Canadians .
America cant steal Gordon like they steal everything else. Basketball, apple pie and comedians...Does America have no shame? Anyway Gordo taught many new artists the deal. Wonder what happened to his buddy Red Shea (sp)
@Gaspastor Steal? Really? I prefer "embrace"... and I hope Americans never have shame in appreciating great Canadian songwriters like Gordon Lightfoot or Stan Rogers (RIP). It shows good taste, at least on the part of some.
And I'm sure most musicians, comedians etc. don't care what the nationality of their fans is... just that as artists, they are heard and perhaps remembered fondly...
Gordon Lightfoot writes introspective music. Imagine all of humanity feeling this kind of understanding and compassion for each other. This man wrote many songs like this. Good thing he switched from the piano. All of his own emotions for us to see and hear. Listen, and you will be better for it.
@lakrissha what is the difference what nationality Gordon is?? There are 25 million great American singers and about 12 Canadians and you have to start pointing them out?? He is a great singer. Leave it at that brother.
Straight out the top drawer....Such a melodic song that still know no end of time.Still as good now as it did when i was a teenager in the early 70s.This version has to be on par with the original & full respect to "The Big Man" that he still hits those vocal chords now as he did then.Gordon the night is still young & if you ever decide to come on over to visit Scotland, well ive a nice bottle of 21 year old Royal Satute malt whisky awaiting for a special occassion.Respectfully..Pete
During my 45 years it seems like the passage of time has gone from one end of the spectrum to the other. As far back as I can remember, in a more simple time, I can remember running and playing all day w/o a care in the world. It seems like the world done got in a hurry and grew up. Most of the younger folks just aren't that friendly, which is sad. If I could have a wish, I'd wish everyone out there would just slow done and be more loving and caring
Truly a great Singer...shame that he died so young. Also, he is a good reason why people should not smoke. That stuff eat him alive in his latter years, as is evident in how he looks as he was singing this song.
@SoutharnBling Sir/Madame: Gordon is not young nor is he dead. He is very much alive and still touring. His touring schedule is easily accessable through the Internet (I tried to "paste" it here, but YouTube will not let me). Let us pray daily for all who are suffering from an addiction of any kind. Thank-you.
I'm not a huge fan of folk music but there is something about Gordon Lightfoot's music that truly touches me. His voice and lyrics are...like @martinbarclay103 said "haunting and emotive."
Canada has a long/strong history, and connection, with it's incredible singer song writers. We will sit quietly, and listen, to someone perform, with a voice and guitar or piano, and remember that evening, for the rest of our lives. These artists must always have a place to play. Whether , Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young or Dallas Green.
Just saw in Daytona..... Age got him, but we had all had fun.

Just saw him last night. Now age 71, with a couple health scares the past decade the voice was there for the most part. As he interacted with the audience and pointed out that was then and this is now he seemed in good spirits and sang one song after another, no breaks or screwing around for about an hour and a half. I got my money's worth.

...I listened to this so much it became a part of my soul..
This haunting, song of pathos and words of lost love and sorrow is so real that it plays to everyone who has ever experienced that in their life...
Gordons voice is so smooth and is filled with such feeling it can bring tears..
He has earned his kudos and admiration. He truly is one of the greatest singers to ever grace us, not to mention the world..

America cant steal Gordon like they steal everything else. Basketball, apple pie and comedians...Does America have no shame? Anyway Gordo taught many new artists the deal. Wonder what happened to his buddy Red Shea (sp)
Gaspastor 4 months ago

If I could have a wish, I'd wish everyone out there would just slow done and be more loving and caring
bigdsears 5 months ago 2
Truly a great Singer...shame that he died so young. Also, he is a good reason why people should not smoke. That stuff eat him alive in his latter years, as is evident in how he looks as he was singing this song.
SoutharnBling 5 months ago in playlist Gordon Lightfoot
@SoutharnBling Sir/Madame: Gordon is not young nor is he dead. He is very much alive and still touring. His touring schedule is easily accessable through the Internet (I tried to "paste" it here, but YouTube will not let me). Let us pray daily for all who are suffering from an addiction of any kind. Thank-you.
JOYisREAL 5 months ago
@SoutharnBling Actually, Google his name. He is still alive and performing at 72 years old.
