nice tone, the more I hear the Wilde pickups in videos of varying quality (not everyone has a ribbon mic lying around), various guitars (that warmoth is sweet and i dig your choices in parts), various amps, and still there is a similarity in the tone, so i'm pretty sure it's the pickups I'm hearing. love the tone...
Has anyone tried on of Wilde's humbuckers? I am looking for set of pickups that will go in my fat strat, main playing rock 'n roll. From Rolling Stones to Guns 'n Roses.
@HandRpuffin -- I have a Fat Tele (SH) and Becky guided me through a set that works together really well. Most SH Fat Teles have PAFs at the neck, which more or less crush the poor bridge pickup. Those guys can hook you up with a really balanced setup. Their website is more complicated that a nuclear power plant control panel, but call them up -- they sure are nice people. Their pickups are crazy good. Just call them and they will get you dialed in.
How do you like the superwide width? I have huge hands, but my strat is a straight vintage, so I'm looking for easier chording/more spacing. I have a regular Fender Strat alder body that I'd be putting it into. Is the wider part just the wide nut and fretboard, with a normal sized heel? Thanks for any replies, dude. Diggin' the guitar.
@Tipperman it's wider at both ends, but the heel gets smaller starting around the 16th fret so that it fits into a normal neck pocket. there is a small fretboard overhang from frets 16-22.
Nice playing dude! Love the guitar and the tone. That neck will be great for my sausage fingers. I will order a warmoth pretty soon myself. I have a rico jr custom with a super wide neck. They are awesome!
@johnathandk42134 i think it's tough to gauge how much (if any difference) wood species makes, but my impression is that it lacks a little bit of the attack and snappyness of maple and seems very even in terms of the frequency range (no accentuated highs or mids). keep in mind that due to the width and depth of this one, it probably has 30-40% more mass than a standard slim strat neck which probably has an impact as well.
@Guitarorpheo Actually, impedance is increased by additional turns of wire in the pickup, which is also proportional to the DC voltage put out by the pickup. Please understand what you are slamming people about, before you slam them, especially when you are wrong.
DC RESISTANCE HAS GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH OUTPUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! people, learn, please. its so incredibily wrong to think that dc resistance can tell you, even remotely, how much output you're gonna get.
Dear friend, that is a great video! Congratulations and thanks for sharing with us! Can i ask you a simple thing: i got 3 L45s but in the web site we don't have options to choose if it is the neck, middle or bridge position! are they the same and we just choose it when installing? sorry, but i understand nothing about these kind of things, just loved the tone!
I like what you've done with your guitar. After years of playing thin necks I accidentally discovered I like big chunky necks too. And for a long time I've had this crazy idea of putting a classical neck on a Strat. Yours looks pretty close. Your guitar is inspiring me to go build one! What kind of preamp/amp setup are you using? Nice playing too. Next time, less talk, more playing! ;-) Keep the Faith!
@PrsFenderJackson1980 I've played a mix of L-280 & L-290 Strat pickups and as far as stacked humbuckers go they are about as good as they get. They still retain a very "single coil" like sound even if the neck pickup has somewhat of a P90 like quality to it.
Their clean tone is nice but they really shine with heavy distortion.
@jamesabrush i really love the neck + bridge position, i guess it's more like a tele or jazzmaster sound than strat. the second tone knob is a push/pull pot that adds the neck pickup to whatever other pickups would normally selected, so position 5 is neck + bridge and position 4 is all three pickups.
@plko88 I'm planning on building a strat soon and I might incorporate that into my build. Thanks! Also, those rail pickups sound really good. Oddly enough, they sound somewhat single-coily to my ears... Is that just the internet audio, or do they actually lie somewhere between a single coil and a humbucker?
Btw your guitar looks awesome - Goncalo Alves. mmm
@jamesabrush i've found them to be very bright. it's kind of a "single coil with the edges rounded off" type of sound if that makes any sense. i don't think they have much of a traditional humbucker sound at all.
Very nice. I just installed a set myself. What wood is your body? Mine is Ash. I have a video playing through my Marshall if anyone wants to hear what these sound like with a little gain.
Nice guitar, nice playing as well. I appreciat the fact that I can actually hear what he pickups sound like and not what 10 effects pedals sound line instead. :)
I like chunky necks, but I think that you just scared me with that thing.
@matrags don't know if i've played a 50s profile - anything easily accessible at the local GC or SamAsh that would have a 50s profile i could compare it to?

@plko88 Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. I'll definitely end up getting one now, since I don't need to mess with my strat body.

It's totally true -- that's why Becky and Bill talk in henries -- still not perfect but a heck of a lot more relevant.

@TheSmabarn1 they are all the same, so it doesn't matter what position each pickup occupies.

@PrsFenderJackson1980 do a google search for "bill lawrence wilde-gate". the first result is a forum with a lot of info on the different models.
