No, ordinary people in North Korea are not happy, even if they don't know any other life. Because to start with, for many of them there is no life at all! Millions died in famines; thousands upon thousands die in prison camps. Freedom doesn't guarantee a happy life, but it does allow there to be a chance for one.

If any of you ever have watched the old Classic Musicals . . . the great Song and Dance Actors and Actresses . . always had that same smile as this girl.

It was part of their classic training . . . and was considered to be a very bad performance if they did not smile all the time during the performance.

I saw this girl 2 years ago, performing in the school children's palace in Pyongyang.

You can say what you want about North Korea, but I have seen happy families having picknick in the park, eating and dancing. I played billard with my two tour guides and enjoyed one of the most interesting trips in my life. The government may be terrible but the people I met were so lovely.

I highly doubt things are as bad as you think for people like this little girl. Granted, life is tougher and harsher in North Korea, there is great poverty and so on, but the same can be said for many western countries.
