The groundhog day was a gift, not a curse,because he was given infinite chances to be good to the people he treated like shit. To me the whole movie after the crew splits up to go to bed is a lucid dream. Bill Marey was dreaming of how his days were ever the same and he was anxious to do something different .It's very common to repeat the same dream pattern in one night's sleep.Then he wakes up a new man, inspires as many town's people as he can in one day, ends up with the girl and all is well.

@WTAWWR08 It doesn't make sense if the whole thing is a lucid dream. Unless in that dream Phil learned to speak French, play piano and learn almost everything about Punxsutawney and its inhabitants etc.

He is genuinely stuck in a loop lasting many years. And although it ends up as a gift it began as a curse. In the screenplay but cut from the film were scenes at the tv station showing Phil rejecting an ex-lover who later performs a voodoo-esque ritual using his watch to literally curse him.

Well for this movie the choice was Italian instead of French.

the words he says in French are unclear to me (even if I am french), I think it's "la fille qui j'aimera" (uncorrect french) => "la fille que j'aimerai" or "la fille que j'aimerais" (the girl I will love OR the girl I would love)
