Gamba is probably the most feared team If your team soley rely on players pysical strength to play .

Their two Brazilian Strikers get great pace and are very clinical in front of goals which means they can get much closer to the danger zone than normal Jap Strikers.The reason why Houston get destroyed is because the players in the MLS are too slow to match the tempo of Gamba Osaka which technically is playing the same kind of Football like the Spanish national team,Barcelona and Arsenal.

oh well gamba youth team is not that great as their 1st team because the Vancouver whitecaps youth team killed the Japanese teams youth sides at a tourney a while back and didn't lose one game so as far as I see it that was a USL teams youth team too :P but then again the caps youth team is the best in north America, but ya Houston had a off game they are actually a solid team and if they had shown up I think they could of won and who decided to have be played in Hawaii? play it in Texas.

japanese teams operate on huge budjets, the japanese players are technically miles better than their american counterparts and the foreigners are miles better than those in the mls as well.

gamba osaka isnt even that good either, theyre a midtable team at best in japan. a team like kashima or kawasaki would beat any mls teams by an even bigger margin

Pat Onstead (Dynamo Keeper) had a bad game, but I wish that people wouldn't judge the MLS off one game in a meaningless competetion that I had never heard of before I look up Gamba Osaka.

People will judge by what they see. What is seen here is a drubbing. What I've seen elsehwere(watching J-League and MLS) is a difference in standard of play. J-League is more fast paced, nice touches, nice build up. MLS is more like plight of might; out jump, out bump, sometimes outrun the opponent. If the tournament is meaningless it wouldn't be because you think it is or because you've never heard of it. That's irrelevant.

BTW this was during J-League off-season and MLS mid-season.

I never seen the J-league, so I can't comment on their quality of play, but I do know that MLS's quality is improving. What I will say is that from I have research Gamba Osaka looks very good, but still I don't know if the J-league is def better than the MLS top to bottom. And about this being during the MLS mid-season...you're kidding right...the competition apparently takes place in February...MLS seasons start in March and end in December

put it this way, the bottom 3 teams in the relegation zone operate on budjets double that of the salary cap in the MLS...the biggest team urawa reds...has a net salary pay out of over $16million USD...that's 7 times bigger than the salary cap in the MLS. the j.league is miles better than the mls, watch some games and see for yourself

I didn't know much about the J-league, but I've done some research. I will concede that the quality of play in the MLS is inferior to that of the J-league. However, you give the reasons as to why the MLS is inferior. The teams in the MLS just don't have the budget to build a team that can compete with the J-league.

For everyone cracking on MLS because of Houston's performance - just check out the MLS standings now that the season has started. HOUSTON IS IN DEAD LAST. They are 9 points back 5 games into the season - the only club to have not won a game yet. I don't know what happened to that team but they are horrible right now...which explains the poor preseason performances. Just a thought.

MLS needs to get better. The game is indicative that many MLS players are slow and have lower technical skills than the J-League players. Comparing the payrolls of the leagues, an MLS teams totals to 2million+ while Gamba for example probably around 40-50million? MLS needs to raise the salary cap to get quality players like Bare. Slow process through as the MLS have less money and does not want to fold like the old NASL back in the 70s.

No, you can check the players' union website. There are a handful of people making over $400,000. It also has every team's total payroll.

But still, MLS doesn't spend too much on its players, they're carefully managing their expansion and budget.

Dero was getting 140k in 06, now 325k in 07. Ching had 160k. If Dero is earning 1.3M then you only have 700K for the rest of team. Several MLS teams don't even have a DP. Having a DP doesn't guarantee anything. Look at Denilson for Dallas. Dynamo don't even have a DP so the 2M per team reamins. Hopefully that is raised at least 2.5-3 this year.
