  • does it make your breath smell??

  • BUT WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE Describe the taste! Salty im guessing?

  • @IzayaV It's not salty, actually. That's why you need to add soyu. It tastes like bland slimey baked beans without the tomato sauce.

  • Is it eaten cold or warmed up? It sounds delicious and disgusting at the same time. :-)

  • I love natto! I always eat it with miso soup =)

  • thanks for producing educational cooking videos

  • I sit here and eat my first meal with rice and Natto! I like it!!:D Greetings from Munich, Germany

  • why is she talking like japanese food is a mysterius alien-.-"

  • O.O

  • If u think natto smells aweful, u have never tried lots of european cheese.

  • I heard it smells awful... That just makes me want to try it more. XD

  • is the music by phillip glass?

  • I really like soy beans, but.... but I just don't know if I can eat something that looks like It crawled out of my nose and took a nap on my bowl of rice.

  • Best natto presentation I've seen on youtube, thx

  • all the music in your videos reminds me of videos games that ive played from japan

  • Soybeans fermented with bacteria....yuck

  • @catnip824 yogurt fermented with bacteria.. yuck.. seriously be more open minded.. natto is no different from yogurt or cheese...

  • @catnip824 what about yogurt?

  • oh ye... "sticky stuff" :3

  • looks like brown rice crispies

  • so whats in those packets anyways?

  • @Merasty0 Japanese mustard and soy sauce.

  • @Merasty0 The yellow one is mustard and the brown one generally has is a soy-based seasoning sauce that may be flavored with something like bonito (fish) or anchovies, or my favorite, a shiso-plum flavor.

  • So, this is like a pickle kinda? Because in China we eat salted/pickled green beans.

  • This Stuff is Like A Drug !!!

  • those packets are usually mustard and soy sauce

  • taste good if you spice it up a little !!!

  • You should eat the Natto with a raw egg and soy sauce

  • Okay I LOVE Natto to death but I not going to lie the way you made it look... It looks nasty!

  • I will NEVER forget my first time trying natto in Japan haha it was the first thing I showed to my friends when I got back because it was so so different

  • Nom nom nom! :D

  • funny how you describe the shape of the packages like thats how they're found in nature, Sarah, LOL.

  • concerning the 2 packets inside, the big one is mirin and soy sauce combined, while the yellow mustard looking one, is well mustard.

  • whoah i think i have a phobia of their shape!

  • うまそおおおおおおおお

  • @ryoubaba1 とってもおいしいですよ.

  • propably tastes good but that does not LOOK vey good in the vid lol. i'm gonna find a place to buy it :)

  • Can anyone tell me why Natto is good for you? I've been eating it for months now just because I like the taste but I would also like to know how it benefits me.

  • asians have the highest prevalence of stomach cancer, go figure.

  • @keitketsudaze .... and the highest life expectancy in the world, go figure.

  • Narrator sounds like she's from New Zealand.

  • Yes, I am :)

  • @thedailyenglishshow

I wish I had an awesome New Zealand accent. I just got this lame Southern California one. :(

  • @Brismo7

At least you dont have a really bad southern drawl.

  • @UncleGweilo yea captain fucking obivious

  • Natto needs a egg!

egg in the Natto is good taste

  • どんあ玉子? ゆで卵? 生卵?

  • @hotbitchxxxgirlpower

    そう、私は卵ない変なとも思いましたロル川

  • Natto actually tastes good and the texture is not bad either

  • I saw this anime once and the character was eating this and the image just stuck with me ever since.... "what the hell is that stuff" I would say! Looks nice! ;p

  • @chinkushou You are approved Natto Otaku :)

  • whats the ideal temperature for eating natto? or does it depend on individual taste? ive never had it but it looks like it needs to be microwaved and eaten warm. this looks really good i hope my asian food's mart has some so that i can try it out. good video.

  • i love this stuff but it looks like someone sneezed in some oats

  • The real way to eat it is with the included seasoning and rice, of course, but also adding sliced green onions and a raw egg. YUM!

  • i just ate this stuff for the first time, and well... here is what i have to say.

the smell is comparable to dirty gym clothes but not really that bad. the taste is just a little strong and a little bitter, kinda almost similar to some cheeses which was not as bad as people made it out to be... the consistency takes some getting used to though but i ate it all up.. i followed the comment below and used soy sauce and green onions and it tasted not bad plus i read this stuff is really good for you

  • really good for you as in if you don't eat it, you will die younger

  • It is the weirdest food I've ever eaten, but once it's mixed up with soy sauce, scallion, and mustard (and added to hot rice seasoned with a bit of vinegar) - oh yes and the bonito flakes too.. it was actually kind of yummy. However, I like smelly cheese, strong curries, and kimchee.

  • Whoa i love Natto, it`s really delicious. And hey most people also eat cheese, and when I think about how chesse is made and how some cheese smells, I wouldn`t eat that too... O_O

  • Like many other Japanese food, natto has amazing medical benefits. (Details on Wikipedia.)

  • Hey Sarah,

Not to far from here is a New Jersey mall called Mitsuwa mall. They had Natto there and we bought. It is pretty good. It was a little strange at first but I got the hang of it eventually. Thanks for the vid. Ill try it this way next time..

  • kind a weird video :S

  • Muito bom pra saúde...

  • what a sexy voice^^

  • O.o Okay, that was...creepy. I want to try it! ^.^

  • What the?

    It doesn't look that bad..but the way that this person described it made me not wanna eat it. O_o;

  • I just tried some, I swear it's texture and feel is somewhere about in between cottage cheese and peanuts.

  • Oh, then do a wikipedia search on "casu marzu", a delicacy from the sardinian region of italy. Check it out, I won't ruin it for you. :) It makes this dish look like a snickers bar.

  • Oh man, I wish I didn't read that. I won't be eating cheese for a while...

  • Do a wikipedia search on natto and check out the production process, if you really want blow your mind.

  • I ate some of this stuff at a mom and pop joint in Okinawa, not knowing any better...I thought I was going to die. It's aweful. Mama san was laughing her ass off.

  • dang i agree with you. this stuff is horrible. i thought it was going to be good cause japanese food is amazing, and it didnt look to bad, but the smell should have been a warning for me haha

  • Lol! I would love to try this! Looks like peanuts in caramel. :)

  • "sticky stuff flying through the air?"

    what is that stick stuff?

  • Very small thing that i notice is that this person placed on chopsticks vertically on the side of a rice bowl. I guess that's Chinese style. According to Japanese manner, a pair of chopsticks should be placed horizontally in front of you.

  • if you like glue, you'll love natto

  • that looks gnarly..

  • MAD GOOD!!

  • If foreigner ask me why we eat natto, I'm not sure what to answer...I don't think the word ''delicious'' is proper. How does it taste like? I DONT KNOW...All I can say is sometimes I get to be dying for it after I haven't had it for a while. See now I'm thinking about Tamago-natto-gohan.

  • my first attempt homebrewing natto was partially failed, I forget to add sugar & salt and the stringiness/stickiness is not very well, while my second and third attempt was a very successful one, I'm now homebrewing natto everyweek and consume natto almost everyday

  • I like mixing it with a fresh egg and chopped green onions. Add the mustard and shoyu, serve it over rice and have some green tea with it and voilà! Yuminess.

  • turn out to be my favourite, I'm homebrewing natto my first time, the natto aging process currently in progress

  • i fricken love this stuff!

  • natto is delicious!!

  • Hehe. Isn't this one of the most popular video you made?

  • Natto is sanitary and a healthy eating.

However, even if you come to Japan, you should not eat natto.

Otherwise, the great trip will become spoiled.

  • I love natto for breakfast!

  • natto doesn't taste BAD. i didn't really prefer it in my mouth; i couldn't really CHEW IT. so it was slimy and hard for me to swallow. :/ when i swallowed it, it still felt like it was in my mouth. o_O* but everyone should try it cause everyone has different opinions. (: it's just not my favorite, you know? *;]

  • Natto tastes like washed baked beans. Its foulness is over-rated! It is mild and pleasant, gooy but not slimey as such, it does not stick inside the mouth, it does not resist chewing or evade the tongue. Perfect alone. Use for fibroid healing, also lower intestinal bacterial support for vitK production. Legend as anticlotting agent as in heart and stroke prevention & recovery. Value for money and enjoyable, the best way to optimise grain is fermented as with most food must be sprouted/soaked etc

  • I miss nattô :(

  • Natto...on pasta? You serious?

  • i love eating natto but it really pisses me off when some people treat natto as fear factor challenge or something. you either eat it cos you like it or dont eat it cos u hate it

  • pour them into your stomach with Miso soup just like a humburger with sprite!

And you can find how japanese have survived with only rice and soy.

  • omg i love natto. its so delicious.

  • Natto is great. I have loved eating natto for many years. Great with ika, a little carrot and shiso, a little wasabe and shoyu, or with a quail egg and tuna. Or just over rice with some scallions.

  • looks like the Japanese version of a rice crispy bar...don't know about the taste, never tried it...

  • The taste of Natto is hard to explain but I would say its UMAMI.

  • is it sweet or sour? tangy or spicy?

  • How does it taste is what I want to know?!

  • interesting...

  • 愛してるぜビーンズ・・・

i siteruze Beans uuuu... by postal2 zombie

  • yuck!! :P i've heard crazy things about natto, but i think just seeing its gluey texture confirms a lot of the nastiness to me. still, i'd love to try it once... just once. ;)

  • i like my natto with

the two packets in the box

    chopped spring onions

    and katsuobushi

  • mnamka :DD

  • tried to eat it once, just a knifetip's worth, and had to RUN to the bathroom to avoid projectile vomiting all over the cute japanese girl who offered it.

  • Can I find natto on a webstore ?

  • an acquired taste (and smell) for sure. natto is so incredibly healthy, i can't not eat it.

  • I recently tried natto because of this video, it made me curious how it would taste. I am quite tough concering food, but after five forks I just couldn't eat one more bite. It tastes so yeasty! But I will try it again, to acquire this taste. Maybe one day I will love it.

  • natto rocks. i can eat it everyday! :D

  • I think I would try it.

  • that looks oddly tasty.i know i should be some what discouraged by the slimy look, but for some reason it looks ...tasty

  • if you ever smelled french cheese, you may agree natto has almost no odor

  • Those guys who invented the poison-free fugu should get to work on a smell-free Natto. That would be a good invention, I think.

  • There is low odor, or odorless natto.

  • I'd looove to know who was the first person on Earth who ate nattou. It's so hard to believe that there was someone who looked at that slimey stuff and thought, "wow, that looks tasty, I should try some". O_o

  • Ohh, I think I've found an alternative to tomato paste. Allergic to tomatoes.

  • there was like 3000 carbs in that bowl of rice

  • lol : )

  • Natto tastes like cough medicine!!! Most similar to Robitussin. And Robitussin makes me throw up. Blech!

  • Looks gross, but the taste is very mild, in my opinion. Sometimes I eat it with the mustard, or Vietnamese style soy sauce (a little sweeter), onions, on rice, by itself, whatever. My dau in law is Japanese and has taught me how to eat it. I liked it immediately!

  • natto is Dirk Benedict's favorite food

  • Natto is DELICIOUS.

But then again I like wierd foods, so... it's all in individual likes and dislikes, ne? :D

  • natto wa kusai desu ne...hehehe! demo oishi so!!! kana???hehehe...

  • Kind of tastes like chicken to me !!!

  • I want some natto...

  • I love natto--I eat it on rice, or in cut rolls at my favorite Japanese restaurant. Yum!

  • wow im suprised you like natto! I'm japanese, so I grew up with it, but my bf is caucasian and can not stand the smell and flavor. haha every now and then, he attempts to try it out, but usually fails.

  • I bought some natto at the import supermarket today. I'm rather anxious to try it, but it does look kind of gross. x.x

  • I like nattou!!!

  • I'm curious..what did the natto taste like? Was it like ordinary beans with a sticy sauce? I remember watching NHK news in english and saw a news cast about it. They showed a family frying the natto which looked really good! :D

  • mmm it's difficult to describe the taste ... I don't know if I can. I think it tastes delicious, but that doesn't really help. Ordinary beans with a sticy sauce? No, not really. Maybe it tastes something like yeast...

  • I love some natto, but not all of them. I hate the baked ones; they were too bitter. Hmm as for what natto tastes like... First time i ate it, i remember it tasting a bit like mild coffee beans; a lil bitter. I hated it at first, but when i ate it with rice the second time, i got hooked. I eat natto everyday now; sometimes twice a day.

  • Natto is best in sushi form, no mess, and the rice, seaweed natto combo is so good. I have it for breakfast every morning! I look forward to it everyday!

  • This is the one reason I don't like cooking shows. Every time they show a delicious food, I get disappointed that I don't have any, or it is too late in the day to eat any. I am in the United States, and while it is hard to find fresh natto, I am usually able to find the frozen variety. For those of you who want to try it, give it at least two chances. It is absolutely delicious but it is an acquired taste.

  • I saw you put soy sauce instead of attached sauce. You're gourmet.

  • I found some fermented soy beans at the Asian market here, but it came in a jar. The soy beans were in this dark liquid, and it didn't look anything like natto. I was too intimidated to buy it!

  • Sounds like you accidentally purchased black bean sauce, a different kind of fermented soy bean. It's commonly used in Chinese stir fry among other things.

  • It's really nutritionous. Nattokenase is the only known agent that desolves clots in your arteries. Every single person who wants to live a long healthy life should be eating natto every day.

  • Eeee, natto! I don't like its smell but it's good for you so I eat it a lot. Good job!

  • Even some Japanese people don't like Natto. I love it though.

  • Is that Natto? no I guess it's snot

  • That looks disgusting. All that slime...

Maybe it's still better than a sausage.

  • i hate natto..thats the only food that i dont eat here in JP.
