The interesting thing is that if the H4 ever entered service, its wood would have given it a unique advantage that was 30 years ahead of its time.
Wood does not reflect radar very well. The same thing happened when the DiHavlind Mosquito was used. Had the H4 entered production, it would have been the ultimate deep-penetrating paratrooper transport.

The U-Boat menace (that it had been designed to go over), was no more, and the Jet Age had just arrived. Some ideas just come too late, and the H-4 was one of them. Mr. Hughes finished it out of ego and a desire to get the Federal Government off his back.
Howard Hughes provided the justification for why society should allow some people to be super rich. However, there doesn't seem to be an equivalent today. The Walton family and Koch Brothers use their wealth to make the world a WORSE place. Sure Buffett and Gates give some cash to charity, but if the wealth was distributed more evenly we wouldn't need charity. Howard was like the fictional Tony Stark. Society was made a better place because of his wealth. We need another Howard.
That hanger is still there in Culver City, at one time it was the largest wooden structure ever built. I was inside once and I threw a baseball up at the ceiling and I just couldn't hit it.
@ragemanchoo82 The large opening on the left side at the cockpit was cut by the previous owners. It was cut when it was put on display at Long Beach next to the Queen Mary.
If the H-4 was intended to be a cargo-aircraft how would it have held massive payloads of cargo within a probably (?) relatively weak structure? This is assuming that the plane had been able to take off and actually carry a payload.
@Latvietis96 Hughes a failure? He was responsible for many scientific and aeronautical advancements that help us to this day. His name carries on in a few companies today, and they are at the forefront of satellite technology. Also, how about all of the successful films he made? And the aircraft designs he helped become a reality?
@pelagic6 No, I don`t think that Howard personally was a fail, but he damaged himself and his reputation after the XF-11 crash (due to a contraprop failure).
The ''Spruce Goose'' is the second bigest airplane in the world after the Antonov 225 Mrya (Cossack)- H4 is such an awesome plane but it`s usage failed- the WWII ended!
@Latvietis96 The antonov wing span is total is 580ft the H-4 Spruce goose was 640ft therefore the H4 has a bigger wing span, plus the h-4 was built over 60 years ago
It was called the Hercules by Hughes Himself. Only media mockingly called it "Spruce Goose".
Also the Antonov An225 has a MaximumTakeOffWeight of 640 tons, whereas the H4-Hercules had a MTOW of 200 tons. Not to mention the former has shown it actually can fly more than just a mile in ground effect. The lenght of the An225 is 276 feet compared to the 219 of the H4.
Well the An225 was built almost 30 years ago, and is hardly new itself.
@McLarenMercedes- Compare your Antonov with a 747 (which was a contemporary) and its only slightly bigger. Compare the hercules with its contemporaries and u will see why its more of a marvel.
@lerlo Fly - INTRANSITIVE VERB: 1. To engage in flight, especially: a. To move through the air by means of wings or winglike parts. b. To travel by air: We flew to Dallas. c. To operate an aircraft or spacecraft.

@tryron78 Yes, it flew a short distance piloted by Hughes himself. Take a look at bomberguy He has a vid that shows the flight.

@mxhonda2 yeah he made a world record (the biggest wingspan of all times) but nothing in this was useful.
Only fuel waste.
