i put manual hub lockers on my 99 ford ranger and i was wondering if i leave them unlocked and turn the switch in the cab to 4hi will i have 4wheel drive or do i have to lock the hubs to get 4 wheel drive?
I just bought a 91 suburban 4x4. This is my first 4x4. Can you please tell me how put it in 4x4 and when I would need to set it in 4x4. I know how to lock the hubs and move the shifter, I just need step by step.. Do I put the truck in park, move the shifter, get out and lock the hubs and then back up 10 feet? What steps do you take to put the burban in 4x4? Also, when do I need to use 4x4, before sliding all over the road or after I start sliding and can I shift into 4x4 while driving?
i just got a k5 a couple days ago, and i never really talked to the guy about how to use 4wd, he just said lock the hubs and put it in 4 and your good, but my hubs dont turn as far as yours, check out my video, is something wrong?
It's hard to tell from the video if there is something wrong. It does seem like your hubs don't move very much. Just make sure the the arrow is in the lock position and then moves to the free position.
what happens if you do 4 wheel drive without locking the hubs? and can you drive around in two wheel drive with the hubs locked without messing anything up?
If you don't lock in the hubs the front wheels wouldn't pull the hubs will just spin.
You can drive with the hubs locked in. In fact I do that most all through the winter and they just pull the level to put the transfercase in gear when I need four wheel. That way you don't have to get out and lock in the hubs.

That sounds like a better idea than the automatic locking front hubs you see on 4wd SUVs..
