  • Still woulda loved it if he went in tho... I'm just saying..*shrugs* -@jaelotus

  • YESS stop focusing on "oh my god is he RACIST" i hate that shit and your right people think theyre doing some kind of social justice when they accuse someone of being racist as if one person saying the n word..sry i mean NIGGA is the cause of institutional inequality JOHN MAYER DID NOT CREATE CRACK or the prison industrial complex

  • jay smooth for president!

  • i am a hispanic american. i grew up in the african american house hold, and in the white house hold. to be honest- in the "white home" there was NEVER any discrimination talked about- every child was loved the same and there was nothing bad ever said against another race. every African american home i stayed in (besides one) i was made fun of,hated because of my race, and i was blamed for what the past held. so in my opinion- a lot of hate hangs around because no one wants to let it go.

  • why are Black people still not equally-represented in corporate structures of most industries, but yet Blacks get scape-goated for "stealing" jobs away from White people?

Black children are still looked at as less-educated.

Most stores & establishments (i.e. Hospitals) in Black & Latino neighborhoods are STILL worst than those in White communities.

  • PREACH my dear Jay.

    yes.

Racism (now, in 2011) is far more dangerous on an institutional level than on any romanticized word in a song or movie or talk-show.

  • @SubliminalMinded2011 there is no such thing as racism. We are all of the same race the correct term and definition the Youtuber is looking for is ethnicentrism. Unless all on this page are ignorant of evolution you would all know their is no longer a different race of humans the Neanderthals died out over 40,000 years ago. This is the reason we still have debates on the theory of evolution vs creation due to American ignorance

  • @BEOWULF9965 I actually agree that "Race" is a construct designed by the Nicean Council (who also designed "the Holy Bible"). "Race" was implemented to keep the elites in power & rule authority, while we fight each other. The problem is, the fallacy has manifested itself into institutionalized practicalities that DOES perpetuate the idea of White supremist thinking. As far as evolution vs. creationism, what I believe has nothing to do with Darwin or Christianity. Controversial stuff.

  • from 1:42 to 1:48 he sounded like Stephen Hawkings all robotic and shit..LMAO

  • Whats this?! A rational person on YouTube! Inconceivable!!!

  • And here we have the rarest youtube video there is. One that is both substantial and exponentially funny.

Your videos needs to have millions of views just for the amount of truth contained in them. It's a damn shame.

  • @willagem28 If a person has cancer, will it go away by ignoring it? No? You don't say. Then neither will race go away by ignoring it.

  • @ERubyV9 you can't compare cancer to racal issues. it just doesn't make sense. what i was saying is that if we stop talking about what makes us different, i think people will start to forget what makes us different. i believe that not talking about what makes us different will pull people together. i think talking about our differences tends to drive people apart.

  • @willagem28 I think you have a very naive view of race and racism. It's not going to go away by pretending it's not there. Pretending there isn't a problem will make it worse, not better.

  • @ERubyV9 well let me try to convince you. if 2 kids get in a serious fight, they're probably going to be angry at each other for some time. if the kids end up arguing about who started the fight or who punched who harder, i think they might get in another fight. or they could pretend like it didn't happen. and after a while i bet they will forget about it and end up laughing about it somewhere down the line.

  • @ERubyV9 there is no racism it is ethnocentrism. please people get your terminology correct unless you think blacks whites and asians etc.. are all seperate species of humans, of course then you'd be wrong. The term you are looking for is ethnocentrism. Neanderthals were the last seperate human species to live along side us modern day humans.

  • @willagem28 Theres an old joke that says humor is tragedy that happens to other people. Its easy to find racism funny if it aint going to affect you. But I know very few people of colour that enjoy being stereotyped as fried chicken eating buffoons only to then be stereotyped as "angry black man" when they point it out..

  • @MrShayneOneill Nicely said.

  • @MrShayneOneill stereotypes are just jokes to most people. you're going to have a difficult time making me believe that stereotypes are a large problem.

  • @willagem28 Yes, stereotypes are a big problem. I'm an aussie. Recently I was speaking to an aboriginal friend who revealed she gets her bag searched every time she goes shopping. She's a legal professional, highly educated, and honest upstanding citizen. I'm an unkempt white person who sometimes is described as 'mean looking'. But I have *never* had my bag searched. No matter what she does, she still is treated as suspicious. Yes Stereotypes are very real and they hurt people.

  • @MrShayneOneill i live in the united states and i am not going to pretend like i know how things work in australia. although i think you can implement faster solutions to your profiling problem than abolishing stereotypes. i think if you guys imposed stricter laws about when and to what extent people can be searched, this wouldn't be an issue. but i'll tell you, stereotypes get started by people race. they start when people like illdoc point out to us that white and black people are different.

  • you are brilliant!!

  • you are my speech impediment's hero.

  • ..wish more people would watch these types of videos instead of lady gaga or whatever the hell people love.

  • @summers15789 ...and I wish more people would turn off youtube and pick up a book. And by "more people", I mean "I"...damn, there is so much good shit to watch on this fucking computer...so little time...lol

  • when being anti-system has become the popular way to express yourself and ebonics tho i feel there is nothing wrong with it i feel there is a time and place where you need to know english and use it in an intelligent form. we live in a world where an african american is president. we need to stop looking it as being at a disadvantage and trying to overcome odds and start becoming one culture.

  • tell me whats deplorable about inner city schools? they're teachers wanting to teach children... but sometimes i gotta think its mostly the children not wanting to learn, theres violence and gangs, drugs etc now we can say its a goverment conspiricy or we can say that its developed as a type of culture for area's considered to primarily african american. As much as there are racists and racism which i do not believe i am tho i fear what i am saying will be misconscrued as such but....

  • @mike577ify I really don't think its a problem with the children not wanting to learn. Its definitely a problem with the system that they are forced into. A structure that has a predetermined mould for students to fit into, if the children don't fit into this mould they are just left to fail continously throughout their schooling life. How is that any way to run a school system, where children are disadvantaged right from the beginning?

  • i think we need to stop debating race. the more we talk about it the more people get devided

  • @willagem28 you're right on. racism is an anti-concept meaning it comes from another concept called "ethnicity" which is defined as non-white, heathen, non-jew. arguing about racism and race is an abyss that is based on ethnicity, you cant win and whites/jews always win which was a real concept that needs to be killed.

  • @landbridge Are you kidding?? Yes, race is an invented ideology that has been created out of some misconstrued biological determinism but that in no way makes it less of an issue. It is flawed science that needs to be corrected. But you need to make people realise that it is nothing but ideology, something culturally constructed and not something people are born with before it can be eradicated.

  • @distilledstu no I'm not kidding, according to the Oxford dictionary the archaic definition of ethnic is non-christian non-jew, look it up. If you can't I'll help you -> bit.ly /dbC1qu Furthermore, racism was invented as an anti-concept to ethnicism, refer to my previous sentence. Thus, building a building on a broken foundation doesn't fix the foundation. If you need help on "anti-concepts" look it up.

  • You are the kind of person that makes me hope (a little bit) and think (briefly) about not skipping the country after college (or possibly FOR college). I think this may have a more significant long term effect - who knows?

  • wow. i followed every word of this vid

  • every race issue is not just a black and white issue is the truth

  • Ridiculously well said!Touche!Do You have a bug in my house?

  • Damn, this is solid gold!

  • well i been ignoring john mayer. i've never seen what was so great about his music

  • You're right. Black people don't have the 'same' educational oppurtunities as others.

They have more, in fact. More than white people, at least.

A little something called affirmative action. Unless black people are getting the short end of that stick like white people are...

  • @JannikDetheroc Affirmative action isn't doing enough, and yes, blacks still continue to "get the short end of the stick." How come all of the people who claim that white people have it so much worse than blacks are always white people who wouldn't have any idea what it's like to be black?

  • @JannikDetheroc BINGO.

  • @JannikDetheroc

    COMPLETELY FALSE.

Many Black kids start off at a disadvantage...they're funneled through deplorable inner city schools. Affirmative action is just a poor attempt to make up for an educational system that still continues to screw over so many Black children and wastes away young minds.

You must be delusional if you see affirmative action as Blacks having more educational opportunities in this country...by the time affirmative action even comes in to play its usually too late.

  • Comment removed

  • instutional problems? black people dont have the same education opportunities? same employment opportunities? huh!?

    ever hear of...

    -united negro college fund?

-black only colleges and universities? there are around 40 or so in the US

    -black chamber of commerce?

    -african american HIV/AIDS resource centre?

    -black community service centres?

    -african american family services?

and the instutional system and opportunities need to be adjusted to help BLACKS!?

  • @rawnie79 Those institutions only do a tiny bit to shore up the massive disparity between races in this country.

  • Oh Jay Smooth, I want to marry you so hard.

  • Every time i watch his videos his dialog and the way he speaks sounds so poetic even if he doesn't mean for it to be, i guess its in his nature. Anyway love the videos!!!

  • "So much wrongness you can swim in it!" lol, i fucking love u!!!

  • I think people are seriously miscontruing what Mayer said. HIS COMMENTS WERE NOT RACIST.

  • how dare you use the word craziness, you're mental healthist!

  • and so what if mayer doesn't like black ladies - more for me :D

    seriously though, who cares about:

    ·playboy interviews, and

    ·john mayer

  • Good vid! I have a suggestion: please pause and take a breath between sentences. You're confusing the auto-caption function.

  • Knowledge !! I've watched this video 6 times and I'm still impressed every time i watch it.

  • What?

  • Here's an idea STOP spitting your video every five seconds!!! It's really annoying.

  • Addressing "those" issues does not take a lifetime of studies. Approaching issues with an open mind and following the evidence to where it leads reveals the truth. Studying pop culture daily gets addictive. I can see that it's one of our major problems of why things are like they are. Continually giving in to the distractions "the entertainment" digs us deeper daily. Youtube tends to bring the clown out in many of us, for views, attention, the ego, but maybe, just maybe, we'll wake up & boycott.

  • @Koolvedge I agree!

  • "His white privilege is a wonderland." LMAO!!!!

  • what do you think of "the master's tools cannot tear down the master's house"?

  • @Roxie21 i'm no expert but my impression that the ways that quote is commonly used today are kinda removed from what Audre Lorde was originally saying?

i wish youtube let us put links here, i'll try and message you a page that touches on this..

  • Despite the fact you never screw up - I still Love you man. You are the best - even without flaws

  • Only the masses too unintelligent to investigate true history firmly believe that black oppression is due to inherent racism - true history is about class warfare, the wealthy minority oppressing the disenfranchised majority; it just so happens that in this country that elite class is also white. Using standard, and obvious logic, one does not deduce from those premises that all whites are priviledged elites.

  • Another valid point Zinn brings up in his book is that historically, America as well as just about every other civilized nation in the world's history, has been ruled by a select minority of often times interrelated ruling famillies. A clever tactic used to keep black slaves from running away and hiding with indian tribes was to incite indian/black racial tensions - it worked rather well I hear. To keep lower class whites/blacks separated is invaluable in reducing revolutionary potentialities.

  • white privilege is wonderland.

-- thats the core of ignorance among white people. If people are aware of this, then, they might understand why racial jokes are not funny.

  • I agree about the importance of policy... but are you gonna turn this into a policy blog, then? It's not like you're going to stop commenting completely. Please don't do that!

  • You stated that it's not about BLACK and WHITE, then you say its all bout Black. I'm WHITE and its the media that does nothing but exploit the Black. They don't say anything about the MESSED up things that WHITE people do. In MY opinion it's not just a race thing, it's all people that succumb to the things they do because of the media.

  • Thank you!!! NoNoNo.

  • "our constantly evolving yet eternally stagnant relationship with race"

Brilliant soundbite! Not sure if its original or a reference, but I loved this.

  • I fall in love with Jay a little more every time he opens his mouth.

  • You're a brilliant dude. I won't comment any further. Love it.

  • The problems that black people face are "systemic" all right, but that doesn't mean that they can be cured merely by government initiative.

Black culture in America is a cesspool of shit. The only people who can change that culture is black people.

  • @Raskolnikhov what an ignorant fool you are

  • @june18th1988

Nah, I'm being more truthful than any of you brain-dead sycophants.

    U mad?

  • Youtube's Spike Lee.

  • THATS RIGHT!! I'm subscribing!

People are so invested in their celebrities its priority over the really relevant issues.

I like how you STAYED on topic && addressed the issue.

  • "His white privilege is a wonderland."

    I love you.

  • Nice commentary Jay, but I think you could have taken it a bit further by simply suggesting that racism matters and not simply "race." The conversation in America has moved away from racism and onto "race" or "race" issues. So to use that language is to be co-opted by the majoritarian story. It's more than just structural/institutional racism, it's racialization, or the process by which things become racialized. check out the article Racialized Metropolis by Darder and Torres.

  • First Operation Ignore Charles Hamilton now Operation Ignore John Mayer.....who's next?

  • lol john mayer... maybe he was drunk.

  • I'm not sure if we can keep blaming the government my dude. When I turn on the TV I see alot of rich black people. Lets face it. Blacks are earning millions in sports and entertainment. However many (not all) of them end up broke after earning these millions. That money can be used to set up businesses employing other black people. Do blacks today have LESS opportunity than Jews, asians, indians, and other minorities had 50 years ago? Not so sure.

  • - you missed his point on that issue completely my man....

  • No I didn't. He made several points and I focused on one of them. There are a lot of posts in here that make very similar arguments. Unless, of course you would like to elaborate on yours.

  • The stereotype in this comment is a form of microagression. Millionaire blacks spending ALL their money and going broke... That's racism, and that shit piles up upon daily stereotypes and microaggressions. Like John Mayer's comment, this is another example of white privilege.

  • @droptheworld I'll give you the microagression thing. When you have limited space, its tough to make a thorough point.. But how about addressing the second point about opportunity out there for people to be successful. Anyone who doesn't have a silver spoon in their mouth has to struggle to make it. Sucks for everyone.. not just blacks. People in this piece are way too sensitive. Get over that shit.

  • @jkimerling you utilize your tv to develop your ideas about black people? that's messed up...

  • @june18th1988 lol.. no man. I grew up in the BX and still live in the NY area. I know and do business with people of all different races and ethnicities. The blacks I know are business owners, bosses and successful entrepreneurs. There are plenty of examples out there of people overcoming adversity and finding success. I just don't agree with illdocs need to make excuses for blacks when there are so many who don't need excuses made for them.

  • You may study pop culture all day, but you made the point about identifying and changing the the public policies and institutions that create a structure for racism a gazillion times better than a Harvard law professor who spoke at my campus last week. I love you!

  • Thank you! Everytime I try to tell someone that racism and prejudice are two different things (the first being the culmination of societal choices and the second being an individuals personal feelings) I just watch people's eyes glaze over. I've stopped bothering anymore. Thanks for making this point so well.

  • I was looking forward to your pop culture dissection, so I have to admit there was a moment of disappointment.

Yet your point is valid, so I can walk away from this only partially disgruntled and partially inspired.

  • race and racism is constantly exploited in politics and in pop culture.

john mayor can get away with saying such racial comments because he's a democrat, just like harry reid.

  • I think we all need to follow Jay's lead here. Our time is limited.

  • constantly evolving yet eternally stagnant relationship with race; i live.

i disagree that the government needs to figure out why black people are still a, b or c. that means black people will need to wait for change. we need to MOVE out of the ghetto like every other minority has done. instead of worrying about why the schools systems are bad MOVE to where they are good. instead of worrying about crime, MOVE to a safe neighborhood. that's what immigrants do and that's what i did.

  • I respectfully disagree. Move everyone out of the ghetto (impossible under this white supremacist capitalist patriarchy), and you create: another ghetto.

You are right that the answer comes from ghetto residents themselves. But it shouldn't be an individualist trap to save certain token individuals at the expense of the ones left behind. We should create a systemic shift to uplift everyone in our communities, to abolish the suffering of poverty, and to create a new world in the ashes of the old

  • @magonistarevolt

i'm saying we need to save ourselves! it's like suggesting people stay in a burning building because the firemen are coming.

  • Excellent commentary.

  • And anyway, you already pretty much nailed the core of it in the what-a-person-is-or-isn't vs. what-they-said-or-did-and-how-what-they-said-or-did-can-rightly-be-perceived-by-others.

I'd write more but I ran out of hyphens.

  • When we get serious about education..uhm..let's say in LA, things will change. Nothing upsets the LA Unified School District more than an absence. They won't call you if your kids if failing or struggling in class...but heaven forbid they miss out on any money because your kid is absent. How about not sending your kids to school at all...collectively..until some demands are met. How about stopping wiht the new organization here, and there adn take radical action-like REALLY demanding equality

  • Motivation to learn has to come from the kids themselves. I think the way you end up with a failing school is when there is a disconnect between how people live their lives and what is being taught in school. A kid is not going to engage with a math class if they don't see how that math class leads to a good future and a decent job. Most of the time the kids don't see that good future because it is no where in sight in their communities.

  • @lorezapocalypse Understanding the importance of learning comes from parents. No child, no matter the community, will organically understand its importance. They are children after all. We can keep spinning the same excuses, but we'll end up with the same results. There are communities here that demand their kids succeed academically-some not even US born- they'd never send their children year after year to schools they KNOW are failing.Kids' would benefit from parents Passion for Ed.Time to act

  • When one understands the way local governments, cities, states and the federal system works in conjunction, understanding of the true problem can be had.

Hit my page and take a look at my blog, by clicking on "A Nation without Fathers". You may be interested in the research I have done...

    Peace.

  • like John Mayer controls policy. This gives those that don't want to think an opportunity to make themselves feel like they're aware. I found Mayers comments to be amusing. How about the person asking the questions? If I was John Mayer I would've felt insulted and answered the questions with cynicism.

  • Also, John Mayer is an asshole.

  • Dude, I'm glad you're at least vlogging like this. A lot of truth here.

  • My man you are truly a jeweler....the jewels you drop, are right and exact

  • I agree 1000%

  • aye, you here his new track? "White Privilege is a Wonderland" Great Song!

  • SOOOHHH ON POint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love your voice and they way you think about things. Your a great communicator.

  • This is great, nice work.

  • @Wibblypig did my comment just disappear?

  • So we're ignoring Charles Hamilton and John Mayer?

  • ehh, john mayer is still cool with me, he was just keeping it real. I didn't find his words offensive. I got white friends who Im close to like that and when he said the things he said it felt like I was just talking to my homie. I mean it's not like he was pulling a full Kramer.

  • @killahkazi what's the difference between what john mayer said and 'kramer?' if you're defending john mayer you can do the same for 'kramer.'

  • @nikki2579 there is a complete difference between saying "Hes a nigger, when I die I'll be a rich white man and you'll be a poor nigger" & "I cant fuck with black chicks anymore." Black folks sit around and compare black and white chicks all the time. The black community is full with so much double standers and there is no way we will ever be looked at as equal if we don't stop them. Im not saying a playboy article was the right outlet for his words, but hes no more racist than u or me.

  • The thing is he didn't say he can't fuck with black chicks anymore, he said he's got a Benetton (United Colors of Benetton) heart and a David Duke (well known white supremacist) cock. The words are much more flavorful and much more indicative than you're giving them credit for.

  • good video as usual

jay: though you've already said that you will only speak on things which are within your sphere of shall we say experience, i do think its important not to forget that there is so much more to the "race / lack or rights" issue than simply white vs. black

dunno if i made myself clear

    anyhow respect of course

  • I wish you hadn't made a New Year's resolution to make more videos.

  • I don't get it. If you're ill-equipped to talk about the bigger questions, if what you do is study pop culture, if you'd enjoy dissecting it and you think there's reasonable discussion to be had in talking about things like John Mayer and Chris Mathews; then why don't you? Why the resolution? Apparently it's what you do and you think it's somewhat valid.

I know I find value in it. My favorite videos are your discussion about race particularly the Asher one. So go and vlog on, my friend.

  • I agree.

  • "nildoctrine"?

    Awesome like always, btw.

  • This is attention to those sound bites - but it's 'meta' attention (attention about the attention) - it's a good conversation - however ending with 'no, no no' to the giving of attention I'd like to see it end with 'yes yes yes' to something affirmative related to action we can all take such as each time a controversial sound bite is offered post or respond to the larger social 'institutionalized' issues. Very inspiring stuff!

  • you're going to end up having a lot of operation igores :)

  • Superb my friend. Superb.

    ~Calvin~

  • Nut's to John Mayer but on the question of equality...

I always feel like there's gotta be something I can do but I can't figure out what. I don't think it's a racial thing, I think we all believe there's gotta be something we could do if we could just figure out what. So far the only thing I can think to do is smile back at everybody who looks at me. I don't know if it helps but they usually smile back. It's a start. I know equal isn't just what you do, it's who you are. I'm trying.

  • @dccrimson hahahaha.. that smiling thing works! if you smile at people they will automatically smile back!

  • Thanks for mentioning institutionalized racism and the uphill battle of attempting to address it in a productive manner. I think people fixate too much on individual ACTS of bigotry, and too little on the system which allows that bigotry to continue to be "valid" in many eyes.

  • i like you. i like this video. i like your ideas. 'nough said.

  • Dear illdoc1,

You are fantastic, and your honesty about the place and significance of situations like this is refreshing and very well thought out. Keep doing what you do, because it's great.

  • I took the whole playboy interview as a joke, a joke played by HIM on HIS own self.

    What is a hood pass??

    white supremest dick smh!

    oi vey!

...Bless him though, i think he is going to have a bit more trouble than Chris Brown getting out of this one....

  • J Smooth, you sir keep me sane when I am here, living in Japan. I used to live in New York and you keep it real and make intelligent arguments and view points on things. I watch your videos over and over again. I am a great fan, and you are awesome!

You make a lot of sense and just overall impress me. White privilege! You are well read and very eloquent.

I am always looking forward to your new videos, keep them coming regularly! You have a fan out here.

  • John Mayer was tryna be down

  • nildoctrine lol

  • i support your movement - going to post this on VladTV today

    @rahim_vladtv

  • but we barely see you jay smooth! i would like to see you more even if it was talking about those things. oh maddow linked to you a few days ago btw..i bet people already told you, but just in case-there ya go. :)

  • John meyer's IGNORANCE and white naivety is what got him in this mess. That white naivety is what keeps people like him from using the discretion that would normally tell us: "im not 100 percent sure that what im saying is correct...AND it IS a touchy subject...hmmm, ill play it safe and say NOTHING". He obviously thought that having a "hood pass" means you're black and know/ live through the hardships of BEING black 100%. "His white privilege is a wonderland" says it best.

  • I completely missed this story and ur right illdoctrine it isn't even worth one's time...

    Not Watching the News/TV>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • Illdoc is on point with this one. Celebrity missteps are the best camoflauge to the real issues in America. "Keep your eye on the rabbit" is a timeless trick.

  • nah on some serious ish, go look back at that video when hes making "bittersweet" with kanye hes been saying that for a while not "nigga", that he has a hood pass and he hangs with alot of black ppl, he even referred to them as "folks", i dont think john mayer is racist at all, and he did sincerely apologize & cryed, i felt that his apology was real.

  • @add1ctedg33k i do think he is sincere about feeling sorry, but i don't think the apologies conveyed a full understanding of what he has to feel sorry about

  • but how tho? its obvious he made it clear, where he pointed out that the majority if not all of his band are black, its not like im asking him at all to repeat the word in his apology... i understand him but another thing I have to take into consideration is that I cant get offended if a white person called me a "nigger" (i had a white friend who used to call me it in terms of endearment) cause its outdated and it means nothing no more.

  • I disagree with you about him sincerely FEELING sorry. First off, not once did he say he was sorry in his "apology". On stage, he was justifying his actions, not apologizing for them. Just admitting that what he did was a "mistake" (career wise or moral wise?). And he is not accepting responsibility by giving this generalized "apology". Neglecting to go into detail as not to "incriminate" himself on stage in front of his fans. None the wiser STAYED none the wiser.

  • @tbhave: by "apologies" i was referring to both his on-stage comments and his original apology on twitter, where in all fairness he did say "I'm sorry"..

it started with "Re: using the 'N word' in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word..." and went on at some length from there..

not an *entirely* satisfying apology IMHO, but it was an apology.

  • I just want to know who the hell are these negros that keep giving out these hood passes.

  • @clnmike good question.

  • And this is why you're awesome.

  • his white priviledge is a wonderland! ha!

  • >_> ya know... I see what your saying about black people being deprived of so much, yeah, it's true. But how about telling me how in the hell it's okay for a primarily black run restaurant won't hire me because im white? Yeah...who is getting deprived now a days....? n_n says to ill "Who Is John Mayor?" heh heh

  • Fantastic as always.

This is exactly why I reserved having much of a fit at the 1st glance of Vanity Fair's Hollywood cover. There are deeper and less transparent issues than the thoughts and words of pop culture.

  • I'm a fan of the guy's music and this came outta left field.

  • I agree the problems are systemic. This is why we need to get rid of these government programs that plague the black community. Public school is definitely one of those institutions.

  • Operation ignore John Meyer *busting out of the sides laughing* Thank you

  • i think mayer went loopy. i've been hearing this story too many times, so i've dismissed this nonsense.

  • Brilliant video as always. <3

  • Good points all and as always said in a deliciously erudite manner. I'm particularly impressed by: "enchanted apple of sound bite lunacy" and "his white privilege is a wonder wall." because. Yes. Even his apology was a backpack full of tears and self centered debasement.

  • YES Exactly! Thank you for the systemic and institutional piece!

  • DAMMIT! Why are you everywhere?

  • thankyou doc!!! I been saying the same thing for the longest, we are never going to grow as a culture or even intelligent beings for that matter especially blacks, if we don't get around putting energy into things that don't matter. so what kenye jumped on stage, let the whole tiger woods thing go, why is it that anything hip hop you always see jayz, beyonce at the forefront ...... it don't matter. if people can't start realizing this we're done.

  • is illdoc Black people? Ive never asked because i didnt want to be rude, but since we're on the subject...

  • @DaveofCleveland: Bro, it doesn't matter. He gets it.

  • @jwnealy3 I think it's fair & valid for him to ask, the nature of one's relationship to the topic does matter, as far as how you choose to speak on it..

  • @DaveOfCleveland I think he said in one of his other videos that he was half black.

  • @yerk3 I don't think of it in terms of halves, but my father is Black and my mother is White, yes.

  • @illdoc1 dam son u a brother?!! thought u were arab or something(not that it matters of course) anyway stay black son and watch out for the man lmao

  • I was just about to tweet you. Damn!

  • I didn't feel John Mayer's comments were racist. But i guess thats my generation. I tend to associate myself with a wide variety of people to the point where i've long come to understand that many people just aren't going to be sexually attracted to every group of people out there. Assuming thats the comment you iz referring to.

  • @staticbb he said a loooot more than that (altho for the record i never used the word "racist" in the vid)

  • "Look for Mayer to continue to make a vague apology to a fanbase and a punditry eager to excuse racist action because they can find no racist feeling behind it. Look for Mayer to swear hes never uttered the n-word before and never will again, and look for the context in which he said it and the clumsy if well-intentioned point he was trying to make about white privilege to be obscured."

This is a telling sign of how things exist and, moreover, will (d)evolve back into hatred.

    "Let it slide.."
