This is a great treat for me . . . David is the main influence on my sax playing, and Phil just brought me literally to tears on his recording on my Christmas CD - Christmas in Rhythm & Bossa - Franco & Guests . . . as usual, he was a one-taker . . . just the two of us at the studio . . . at the end of the take he asks: "Is that alright, 'maestro' or do you want another take?" I turned over to him on the chair and said (with tears in my eyes): Are you kidding me???
Both amazing musicians. To me Phil Woods is the ultimate jazz sax player and David Sanborn the greatest blues sax player I ever heard. What a combo of talent. Thank you for posting this great recording. You have excellent taste in good jazz!!
all they need is some cigarette smoke in the background. I find it ironic that Sanborn is playing a Mark IV and woods is playing an unlacquered Yamaha.
@coltranematrix1 What's so ironic about that? The Mark VI is the best ever but the Yamaha Z is the best on the market. I bought a Z as my back up horn and think it's the closest thing to my Mark VI.
@notoriousbwg He's actually playing his own custom model. It's like the YAS-82ZULP (possibly a W at the end) or something along those lines. It's part of that artist selected series or something. Dave Koz, Jeff Coffin, Randy Brecker, Wayne Bergeron, among others, have their own models as well.
@SupahflyJazzguy the artist selected series is different from their horns. they picked out the artist series horns from a batch this past year. Their actual horns are older. Jeff's is a prototype Z from before the released it. It was originally lacquered and was dipped for him to take the lacquer off (when he mentioned to the Yamaha rep that it'd be cool if they had a dipped horn). Phil's is also a pre-release model as is Dave Koz's silver plated horn.
@TheUntouchable57 I just found out that Phil Woods did the solo work on Billy Joel's "Don't go changing" - He is one of the greats - Thanks for posting
Kinda curious about what you've accomplished in your life. Clearly you have no knowledge of jazz or you wouldn't make asinine comments about either of these musicians particularly Phil Woods. Remember, It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
guy in the leather hat: "im friggin awesome, im the man, im old as shit, and think im the best in the world. I love this song because it repeats the main riff about 500 times over"
skinny guy in suit: "this song sucks ass, im gonna tilt my head to the side, because i dont want to be involved in this shit, like that stupid leather hat guy."
Thank You!!!! I've been waiting along time for someone to post this on YouTube! Can you post the interview that was at the end of this clip? I wouldn't mind hearing what these two greats have to say. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to share.
Sure thing, once I'm able to find it - I have a sort of 'best of' compilation, which (unfortunately) removes all of the interviews. But I should be able to find it.

What the ''quote'' Woods plays early into his solo that makes Sanborn crack up?
fluidjazz 8 months ago 3
@fluidjazz It's just a common blues lick.
x2008lco 6 months ago
@fluidja Sounds like a typical Stanley Turrentine lick to me.

If this is the tune that is on Closer, this tune is Senior Blues.
I would enjoy someone posting "Enchantment" and "Poinciana" also from Closer.
