I finally found it!!

I've never heard this on the radio since they've started playing so-called 'oldies' (late 60s music).

As a youngster I thought that the snake kept saying "I'm the sssssnake" rather than "sighed the snake", meaning that years of web searches brought up nothing.

This is the original version.  Johnny RIvers signed Al WIlson to his new label "Soul CIty"...soon to be home for the 5th Dimension. Some of the same musicians used on this track were also used on Kenny Rogers & The First Edition's "Just Dropped In (To See What My Condition Was In)". Same basic arrangement for both songs...starting off in D minor and modulating to Eb minor and then E minor....check it out.
