On my way to my Grandmother's funeral, United baggage handlers managed to break my wheelchair. I hope I have better success in getting this resolved then you did. It was not fixable as they severely bent the frame, how I don't know, so severely, that it will no longer open in to its right position. Yup frustration has already set in as I have had to spend over $1,000 to replace it, and haven't heard a word from them yet. Good luck to you and I love your song!
What a really great way to constructively make a point, and the first song is a really great song also. I enjoyed it! It is sad what has become of United, my grandfather was a United pilot from 1945 (they weren't called United then) until about 1990. In the 60's through the 90's they were one of the best, and like most have gone downhill.
This is the joy of capitalism!! if you have a bad experience you need to tell everyone about it!! This is the joy of youtube and the first amendment. If EVERY one would do what Dave Carroll has done, companies would be ALOT better to their customers!! WAY TO GO DAVE you are my hero!
United only responded to him because the song got so much attention. Everyone else who's guitar's get forcibly checked and broken will be ignored by them, the policy remains.
How are these video related to being Canadian vs. American? It's about a broken guitar and a crappy airline. There is no better country. Every country has it's flaws and good points. Stop acting like children!
@zev007 They teach that in America, but you'd never know it. I swear 95% of the population are completely ignorant on grammar - especially nowadays with our young people texting and whatever. Nobody seems to know how to spell either. But "its" vs. "it's" - I hardly ever see anybody get that right. It's not that difficult. (It's = it is). Peace out. :)
@Savannahsens3 I believe he wanted to change the customer service approach. Maybe at first it started with compensation, but after fighting with them for so long, I think he recognized we have a huge problem with customer service.
I was shopping for plane tickets the other day, I could pay the same price to not fly united. So I chose the other air line. Sorry United you lost my business.
Just now my girlfriend asks me: "Josh, these are both the exact same cost, so which is a better airline: United or Continental?" To which I responded "United Breaks Guitars". We both laughed and she clicked "purchase" from Continental. So there's some 900 bucks they will never see. Thanks for such an awesome song.
I am sure this artist was 'threatened' by the corporate machine (United Airlines) to tone down his complaints. The "statement" above sounds like something a lawyer would have written. And it smells United Airlines corporate lawyers! It stinks!
Sometimes you can play a dozen guitars of the same model and one will have its own unique feel and sound. I hope the one you lost was not one of those you will forever miss. Great way to deal with a tough situation!
Hey Dave, would you ever consider doing a anti policy song against Safco Insurance company? They are awful and the adjuster for this company, Ms Nucci, has an attitude and sends nasty emails. @Ripley44mag - Tuesday, 8/17/10. I agree! Letting United donate the money was far too charitable of Mr. Carroll. He trusted them with his guitar now he's going to trust them with the compensation money? Dave Carroll could have taken the money and donated it to a charity of HIS choice, not United's. Never leave money on the table and walk away when you're dealing with a large corporation. I'd say that was a poor investment decision. Yup, some big executive lunch. Dave EARNED that money!
Truly a class act, Dave....as previous posts have mentioned. You have taken the high road on this and came out a winner. Best wishes to you, your family and your band. I have a CD of Sons of Maxell and my family enjoys it very much.
You're a genius Dave! I love United. It is a great airline. Unfortunately, unless multiple people complain corporations don't take action. I am glad this worked and will hopefully improve airline customer service across the board.
Thanks for the idea Dave. My family and I went thru a terrible racist experience with Air France. I now plan to make a video about my experience and put it up on utube. Love you video, good going.
Yeah! I concurr that Dave is not only PURE CLASS but a TRUE CLASS too. we have big service providers here whom have the atitude "take it or leave it" and "you need me more than we do"!!! hope for some Daves here to stand up for the belittled!
Love this song. Hadn't heard of you until this video, hadn't heard of Taylor guitars, and the only thing I did know was that United Airlines sucks. They are rude, hostile and unrepentant. Loved this song.
HAH at 1:03 he does make it sound like a Boot. I have never heard a Canadian say it unintentionally like that until now. I dont say it like that and no one I know does, must be a Islander thing.
SERIOUSLY -- this whole incident shows that U.S. airlines NEED TO BE RE-REGULATED. WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMAN and tell 'em to back the hell off of nonsense like carbon credits, etc., and pass a bill that will make a difference to Millions of us: REREGULATE THE AIRLINES. MAKE THEM TREAT PEOPLE PROPERLY!!!
DO IT NOW; DON'T DELAY! If you do, the next step will be TSA agents with proctoscopes and believe me, you DON'T want THAT!!!
Airlines need to be put in check by THE PEOPLE; THE CUSTOMERS. Enough with the damn regulations, already. More regulations, especially by the government, just cluster everyone's lives up and make it harder to do everything.
People just need to stand up in numbers and complain. The old-fashioned American way. People need to stop being so complacent and stand up for themselves, like this guy.
Dave -- Canadian to a fault. Sorry sorry sorry ... What are you doing??? "Oooh they should give the money to charity" -- What for??? THEY BROKE YOUR GUITAR -- They owe YOU. They should pay for a new axe, pay for the time it took you to pressure those corporate a-holes into paying, AND give matching funds to charity!! Seriously, don't be a pussy about this! This is an evil corporate behemoth -- they owe ALL OF US!
My daughter was just refused gate checking for her valuable cello on SLC American Airlines, and it was broken too. The policies are ridiculous! Because her high-tech safety case was not damaged, there is no compensation. Are you interested in a collaboration for hate-song #3?
In all honesty i think hes being WAYYY too nice and it shouldn't have had to go this far before they realize that they're the idiots and they need to do something. Who would've thought that they got paid to break peoples stuff...Must be nice I wonder if they're hiring....
Outstanding Dave, your not only a genius musically, but you have a very good heart and in my books that tops it all. Thank you for all the humor in this and sorry about your Taylor guitar, they're never quite the same once they've been broken. Mark
Without people like you who won't just sit around when treated unfairly we can hope to get better service and notice from companies such as united air.
to airliness: too bad u consider a valable guitar worthless shit. wish we could all make what u pilots do. no wonder u carry ur own stuff on board yourself with ur attitude. hope ii don't fly with u.
you really are a nasty pasty as noted by the comments addressed to you by many people unrelated to this particular subject , are you in a competition with others to win the most violent reply to your purile comments _airlinesss , a most sad individual with nothing going in your sorry life, A person could almost pity your lack of empathy , unfortunately that person isnt myself , the guitar was in his possesion for ten years and was trashed by ratbags with no respect for peoples property

and why are u trolling around youtube watching people sing about united breaking worthles shit?? Sounds a bit sad to me. Also no I do not have a sorry life. Im an airline pilot for Southwest Airlines and its a pretty damn awesome life.
I have to agree with BigBoiJC. When you pay for transportation your expecting you and your luggage to get to your destination safely, and guitars are nowhere near "worthless shit." They're musical instruments and extremely expensive.
Maybe because your a pilot it obscures your views of the rest of the airlines?
@airlinesss of course it is, for you. you live in perhaps the most overpriced and incompetent industry that would have failed years ago if it wasn't propped up/subsidized with other people's money.
other people suckling off the government tit, such as crackhead welfare recipients, are also probably pretty psyched about their sweet lives.
Well its not my fault. Also I don't think that any of the US airlines have needed any bailouts... maybe united, but idk, but Swa which i work for i know hasn't. Hell, you think the airlines/FAA have been using gov't money? The automobile industry has had it 10 times worth than the airlines, now Toyota is screwed. But yeah...
Er. Wrong. 2001, Bush bailed out the airline industry, by signing the Air Transportation Safety and Stabilization Act. Over 15 billion American dollars went into this. Do your research.
Agreed, that is an extenuating circumstance. At the same time, The airlines' problems stem deeper than that. 911 was simply the event that set them over the edge.
Worthless sht..to who U .You dumbass. Some instruments can cost "MILLIONS" of dollars depnding on the instrument. Your airline is worthless and expendable..You'd be the first to cry if your shit got broken..far as we;re concerned YOUR WORTHLESS
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A guitar broke? thats what all this controversy is about? a broken guitar??? OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW?! How sad, get over it. Peoples toilets break, toys break, my leg broke, my door broke, my kitchen sink broke, and now a guitar broke? oh NO!!! The world is coming to an end. Get over it you whining bitches.
@airlinesss the thing is...these guitars are expensive and shouldn't be thrown around like basketballs. They're supposed to handle equipment and luggage with care and they apparently didn't.
Hey Dave Good Job, I Love These I Fly Myself I love how you handled the situation. Congratulations on the Vidieos especially on #1 how the attendants look. Good Job
So true. Corporations are evil designs. They get millions of unearned money in stock offerings and their business zooms into orbit. Then the stock holders
become the concensus, and all they want are profits. When we have a problem with a corporation's product they are seldom reduced to a responsible person with
Mr. Carroll: I won't be viewing any of your YouTube videos; as I will not be participating in giving you any additional attention. From what I could tell by reading here, you got offended by U.A. damaging your guitar & refusing to compensate you. Unfortunately that happened & that is too bad. But , you have chosen to stay angry with them & to be bitter & in a state of unforgiveness. You should forgive them, for your sake; for your spirtitual health!! You should repent. May God help you.
Get a life! United OWES Mr. Carroll. This isn't about being bitter and unforgiving - it's about what is right. People shouldn't be treated so disrespectfully.
@MrJeffas: you won't be viewing any of his videos anymore? terrific! we all have rights to see & not see what we want. Saying he is "angry, bitter, and in a state of unforgiveness" huh? I'd LOVE to see you lose $3500 and just say "ohh well, it happened, it's too bad". LOL! never in a million years. 99% of people would have been exactly what you said: angry, bitter etc, not Dave he still believes in a just world & that we should be held accountable for how we treat one another. Dave, you rock.
So, Mr Jeffass, what have you had destroyed by a large company that refused to take responsiblity for their negligence? Nothing? Then shut up. You speak without experience. Not only will I continue to view his videos, because of this I bought his CD.
lol at giving up the reward so the airline could donate the funds to a charity - and get the tax deduction like they always would or received in the first place..
Very nice, well spoken man, but ultimately a loser/fool.
Thankyou for inviting me back to your forum to hear the news that United did offer to make amends. Too bad most companies do not have the heart to handle these indiscretions of theirs without a hit song getting their attention. Please keep me posted.
yea, but if there is one thing this reminds me of the only agenda of any given company is to make money, nothing else. United wanted to save money by not paying for the guitar. However when he became more of a threat to their profits they offered to pay for the guitar in an attempt to improve their image which suffered. Regrettably corporations will never have heart no matter what they say all they really want is money.
I too am a travelling canadian muso. last year i dropped my passport boarding a p-lane in florida..discovered i didn't have it on the plane. While waiting in Atlanta to change planes..i got a page...a flight attendant had found my poassport..put iut on the next plane to Atlanta with a note to track me down before i boarded to fly to Toronto. Atlanta is a BIG airport. I'm forever grateful to that United employee
Makes me NOT want to take my 1st Edition signed Ltd. Edition guitar anywhere except as a "carry on", and doubt they'll permit that......think I'll take the long U-Haul drive instead, when I leave California, andtake into hotel with me when I move out of this miserable state, the expense here is killing me, and I'm from here.....go figure.
how do you suggest just a normal guy like me get them to do whats right?? all they do is give you the run around until you are so frustrated you just give up. Pretty lame if you ask me, you would think the idiots would see the big picture. My belongings that they "lost", have a monetary value of about $1000. I am surely going to be buying more than that in airfare over my lifetime. And guess who will never be seeing a dime of that money again? But they have their heads buried in sand, MORONS
I got my start in the airline industry as a bag handler for a United Express at IAD (Dulles). The ramp used to be a professional career position at United but it has degenerated into race for the lowest wages. This is espcially true at Express. I don't know if Dave was on mainline or Express but this is not new or rare. United's cost cutting has resulted in a true decay of the brand.
An aside to Dave's problems there are obviously a lot of 'scandalous' issues with things going 'missing' from peoples luggage. I had a friend lose over $30,000 from a giant shopping spree in NYC all designer stuff. It somehow disappeared. It wasn't about the money it was about the stuff!!! She wants it back but they wear you down over time and it gets put on a back burner-who has time for all the calls and followup?
I know a fireman- stiffed by a huge multi-national car co- the finance dept. I wrote a really great letter that parodied all their bull from their corporate websites and pointed out that his experience would go on to the fire dept intranet as a "cautionary tale" to all employees with a note for them to tell all their friends. I also pointed out that this letter would me sent by email to the national chief exec who was lauding their "customer care" on their website"! They backed down!!
this is a very strong statement from Dave. It's like a slap in the face to United. He turned the offer down and wished the money would be donated to the charity of their choice.
Dave, you did us a big favor here. B/c little "people" like us have no say in such a big strategic event like you've experienced.
Dave seems like a "stand up" guy. He just wants them to do the right thing. But today everyone's either acting like their not responsible, or, looking to find a scape goat to blame. Proper training and possibly an ethics class would be advisable for all employee's (of all companies). Just do the right thing (yes even as a baggage handler) and problems like this go away.

Never leave money on the table and walk away when you're dealing with a large corporation. I'd say that was a poor investment decision. Yup, some big executive lunch. Dave EARNED that money!

SteveKraner 1 year ago

This is an evil corporate behemoth -- they owe ALL OF US!

airlinesss 1 year ago
I have to agree with BigBoiJC. When you pay for transportation your expecting you and your luggage to get to your destination safely, and guitars are nowhere near "worthless shit." They're musical instruments and extremely expensive.
Maybe because your a pilot it obscures your views of the rest of the airlines?

@airlinesss of course it is, for you. you live in perhaps the most overpriced and incompetent industry that would have failed years ago if it wasn't propped up/subsidized with other people's money.
other people suckling off the government tit, such as crackhead welfare recipients, are also probably pretty psyched about their sweet lives.
lolcats1799 1 year ago
Well its not my fault. Also I don't think that any of the US airlines have needed any bailouts... maybe united, but idk, but Swa which i work for i know hasn't. Hell, you think the airlines/FAA have been using gov't money? The automobile industry has had it 10 times worth than the airlines, now Toyota is screwed. But yeah...
airlinesss 1 year ago
Er. Wrong. 2001, Bush bailed out the airline industry, by signing the Air Transportation Safety and Stabilization Act. Over 15 billion American dollars went into this. Do your research.
copilottheband 1 year ago
True, but the circumstances were a bit different. People stopped traveling out of fear after 9/11, and the airlines lost billions.
oldNavyJZ 1 year ago
Agreed, that is an extenuating circumstance. At the same time, The airlines' problems stem deeper than that. 911 was simply the event that set them over the edge.
copilottheband 1 year ago
Worthless sht..to who U .You dumbass. Some instruments can cost "MILLIONS" of dollars depnding on the instrument. Your airline is worthless and expendable..You'd be the first to cry if your shit got broken..far as we;re concerned YOUR WORTHLESS

So true. Corporations are evil designs. They get millions of unearned money in stock offerings and their business zooms into orbit. Then the stock holders
become the concensus, and all they want are profits. When we have a problem with a corporation's product they are seldom reduced to a responsible person with
decision making powers. ////

Thankyou for inviting me back to your forum to hear the news that United did offer to make amends. Too bad most companies do not have the heart to handle these indiscretions of theirs without a hit song getting their attention. Please keep me posted.
MegaSage007 1 year ago
yea, but if there is one thing this reminds me of the only agenda of any given company is to make money, nothing else. United wanted to save money by not paying for the guitar. However when he became more of a threat to their profits they offered to pay for the guitar in an attempt to improve their image which suffered. Regrettably corporations will never have heart no matter what they say all they really want is money.

I got my start in the airline industry as a bag handler for a United Express at IAD (Dulles). The ramp used to be a professional career position at United but it has degenerated into race for the lowest wages. This is espcially true at Express. I don't know if Dave was on mainline or Express but this is not new or rare. United's cost cutting has resulted in a true decay of the brand.
maxsmodels 2 years ago 8

American where is it, where have you taken my Nikon.

If I could, I would get it myself, because I know right were it is.

Please, please, please, I waaaaaaaannnnt it baaaaaaaaack.

this is a very strong statement from Dave. It's like a slap in the face to United. He turned the offer down and wished the money would be donated to the charity of their choice.
