Extraction of borax, chromium, copper, gold, and uranium is being vigorously carried out by the Chinese government as a means of providing raw materials for industrial growth.

Seven of China's 15 key minerals are expected to run out within a decade and consequently the extraction of minerals in Tibet is increasing in rapid and unregulated manner. The new railway line to Lhasa is expected to provide easier means of exploitation of Tibet's enormous natural resources.

What they're neglecting to mention is that many visitors are Chinese. Not just Europeans/Americans/Aussies, etc. Far too often we (westerners) get accused of "ruining" places that become popular. My feeling is that a place cannot be ruined by commercialism unless the local people themselves play a part in encouraging it. That is what people forget. I went to Tibet 5 years ago. The old Tibet is long gone and it mostly Chinese culture that is changing it. Not foreigners visiting.

There are more chinese in Tibet than Tibetans now. This mass immigration has happened since the invasion of Tibet 60 years ago. Lhasa is a chinese city now.

The Cultural Genocide of Tibet is a major issue for Tibetans as well as human rights.
