  • @Kwakmanonthebay Don't be such a tool. Gerard Hoffnung read it in 1958, Pat Cooksey turned it into a song, douchebag.

  • @themaskobscure But actually this original concept appeared in a joke book originally in the 1800's

  • an ceoil is go maith.

  • Brilliant

  • I heard this song today for the very first time and I had to stop what I was doing to listen the words... and haven't been able to restart before laughing off my pants!

    Funny song, indeed.

  • who is singing dat song?

  • @superdarby101 Sean Cannon

  • I love this song, it is one of the funniest I've ever heard. Poor Pady just can't get a break, oh, wait, he got quite a few, didn't he? :D

  • If you think this is funny, listen to this spoken version recorded in 1958 recording by Gerard Hoffnung. It is far superior as a piece of comedy. Apparently, the Dubliners (Pat Cookey) and the Hoffnung versions are based on a musical hall recitation from the 1920's and, according to Dick Gaughan, was first published in The Readers Digest in 1928.

  • @Greenjack1959 Nah mate, I'm Australian, but I do have some Irish blood.

  • My Father always used to tell me this story as the 'Bricklayers Labourer. Love this version too.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • No one can perform it as funny as Sean Cannon can. check out 'the pool song', very funny as well!

  • @hmart47 he let go of the rope so the barrel is heavier than the rope so it started down once more :)

  • @hmart47

The barrel had yet to be unloaded so the bricks where still in it:

Now, clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow,

so I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below.

But in me haste to do the job I was to blind to see

that a barrelful of building bricks was heavier than me.

So when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead

and clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead.

  • QUESTION! Why is it "The barrel than being heavier, it started down once more." Wouldn't the barrel be lighter because it had lost it's bricks...? :\ Or is my interpretation of this wrong?

  • @hmart47

"As I lay there moaning on the ground,

I let go the bloody rope.

    The barrel than being heavier,

    it started down once more"

    There's ur answer/

  • @hmart47 not irish are you?

  • This is almost exactly the Mythbuster's "Barrel of Bricks"

    XD

  • @WhiltiernaAria Where do you think they got the myth from? ;o)

  • This is one of the best versions of this song I have ever heard and by far and away the best unaccompanied version. It takes a very good performer to carry this song off well and this guy dose it without missing a beat.

  • Ten people did not understand why patty was not at work.

  • This is clearly neither Barney nor Ciaran Bourke, its Sean Cannon

  • We had to sing this song in Jr. High...... best flippin' song I've ever had to sing for a grade.

  • I wonder if I can use this note to get a day off from work?

  • Just amazing love it!

  • its definatly not barney as i know him personally and as you can hear that is a western brogue u tool not a dublin accent also barney hasnt got the breath anymore god love him

  • This song deserves more recognition. Instead of shitty modern music.... this actually makes more entertainment

  • Its Ciaran Bourke not Sean Cannon.

  • @coudinio

By the way this IS Sean Cannon

  • great song, heard it sung by an irishman at an australian pub last week with a few more expletives used haha

  • The best song since Hovis

  • I've heard this before from the Scottish Duo "The Corries" It's a great song.

  • This is comedic genius.

  • turking great

  • Don't try this one at home!

  • 9 people have used this as an excuse not to go to work, and failed.

  • whooooooooo

    the best of the best!!

  • Robbing bastards. Written by The Corries

  • @hawickman An irish man Pat Cooksey wrote this. The Corries covered it just like the Dubliners did. Do a bit of research before you accuse people of being "robbing bastards"

  • @ArRithArLuasLasrach

If Pat Cooksey "wrote" this in 1969 (according to his website) how comes Gerard Hoffnung was performing it in Oxford in 1958? Like you say, do a bit of research . . . . .

  • @hawickman I believe the original idea for the story came from a cartoonist in the 20's. There have been many covers and renditions done of this, so think before you post. And the Corries version sucks anyway :P

  • Been looking for this in the land of tejano music for thirty years. "You mean the doblooners" that tejano punk band? Thnax, rpgplayer

  • THUMBS UP IF YOU SAW THEM TEST THIS ON MYTHBUSTERS

  • @yogurtshwartz thumbs up if you are a thumbs up whore!

  • try listening to Noel Murphy's version, much better.

  • The version performed in Germany is better. With the introduction in germarish.

  • @athox germarish?

  • @MercilessGiraffe half german and half irish- or the other way round ;o)))

  • hahahah epic XD this is the exact same story in 1 mit tested by the mithbusters ! thumbs up ^^

  • Da big eejit let let go of the rope

  • What year was the 40 years concert?

  • this band makes me proud to be irish

  • love this song

  • One of the funniest songs of all time.

  • this is the best song ever the dubliners are the best band ever RIP RONNY AND LUKE!!!!!!!!

  • one of the best Irish songs ever. been around for almost 100 years but the Dubliners do the best job at it

  • this is a classis u sttupid twat///// you cannot ever get ant better..take a look at ure self..and see if u find any thin fuunnier..

  • Well done it's the first time I have heard this track simple but marvelous

  • top class

  • Good man ya Sean!!!!!!!!

  • excellent

  • brilliant!

  • it so cool

  • Live in carré, Amsterdam

  • @Omenscry fuck you you prick

  • @ghosttheman i apoligise for that unfortunate comment, i just reccently regained control of my account which had been hacked. it seems my doupleganger has left several comments upsetting many people so im going around clearing up these misunderstandings.

  • @Omenscry it ok sorry for calling you a prick

  • in case u need a sick note x

  • mint song (H)!

  • Really love this.

  • always puts a smile on my face xxx

  • Very clear very good very clever and very well done

  • is this barny singing????????????????

  • @margatelad

    Nope. this is Sean Cannon

  • @margatelad Read the description much? :P

  • @margatelad No Sean is singing -.-

  • @margatelad What a gay question xDDD

i´m only able to say OMG

  • @margatelad If that was barney, the song'd last nine minutes, but you'd have a great story added too.

  • This is barny mckenna singing. its the one song i think i have heard him singing, later on sean cannon sang it every no and then, but this is barny.

  • @kettsteve thats not barney ya stockin of shite. barney is as dub as a dub could be.... this is clearly not barney's dublin accent

  • Love this song looooads <3 x

  • This song takes the basic idea from an urban myth (the barrel full of bricks and the workman). You'll probabily find in the related videos also the Mythbusters episode regarding this particular myth:)

I find anyway this song very very entertaining :)

  • Great song

  • i'm pretty sure the dwarves have a scottish accent not irish

  • @0Gumpy0 I think he was onabout lepracorns (sorry if wrong spelling) but who cares, its funny.

  • me da loved dis xxxxx

  • ILAMO.

  • LOL

  • lol love it, makes me laugh everytime, thanks.

  • I love this song, it sums up me,,,,lol

  • r u a brickie in derry?

  • Love it, but who sang this originally?

  • Pat Cooksey was the author. There's a very popular cover of it done by Robbie O'Connell.

  • @lonepalm58 The same story was also part of Gerard Hoffnung's repertoire in the 50's-60's but not as a song. See 'Gerard Hoffnung at the Oxford Union - The Bricklayer's Lament'. But this is better.

  • Is there a line missing from this? I remember a version where he hit the barrel again, as he fell down after hitting the pulley, and it shot up after spilling the bricks.

  • Irish wish cool yo!

  • Awesome!! Such a simple, but entertaining song

  • Our teacher here in Germany gave us as a homework to hear this song. We also listened it in school. And red the text. I like "The Dubliners" and the story in the lyrics is funny.

  • i heard this in school 2 years ago. i love this!!

  • haha our teacher played this in class today as an example in poetry

  • The Dubliners are comparable to Led Zepplin.

  • wat a legendary song funny 2

  • Bless our Lord for the Irish!! they gave us the dubliners, whisky and guinnes!!

  • AMEN!!!

  • @minerva53 Your welcome

  • @minerva53 #

plus many more ya forgot to say!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @pheonix1355 actually the loacation of the guinness brewery is st. james gate dublin ireland and it has been since 1759 when arthur guinnes signed a 9000 year lease on the property. its been there for over 250 years and takes up a decent sized plot of the city of dublin. its is one of the most well known irish exports.

  • @minerva53 whiskey, not whisky, whisky is Scottish, like this song by the corries!!

  • @minerva53 Scotland gave you whiskey...but yes, God bless the Irish !

  • @minerva53 no whisky is scottish

  • So imaginative. Proof us irish got talent.

  • I don't think Gerard Hoffnung (who wrote the original sketch) was Irish..............

Pat Cooksey (who turned it into a song) is Irish, though, I'll give you that.

  • as if it's not been proven enough :P

  • My Grandads Fav Song Until He Died R.I.P Grandad :'( Miss You

  • Brilliant in the original Irish accent lol!!

  • good luck with that, wuzcloopin!!!!! if it works let me know ,ok??!!!!!

  • Haha, I'll have to use this next time I call in sick

  • what did mythbusters ever decide about the accuracy of this ( awesome and funny) tale??????

  • They figured it takes ALOT to break a barrel... so you may hit it as you go up, but unless you lay there and let go, you should be ok-ish... if you can call a 14 story fall "ok"

  • thanks wolfdarrigan, surely it would almost EXPLODE when it hit the ground????( i guess i should watch mythbusters!)

  • I simply love this one. It's definitely my kind of humor and everytime I hear it I'm laughing. Thanks for sharing :)

  • Great - just great - Thanks for sharing

  • bloody brilliant!

  • the first time i heard it i was laughing so hard i nearly pxxxed me pants and i still chuckle at it every time i hear it :-()

  • it is very good

  • As a kid on Sundays in the 60's and the 70's in Stretford my dad used to listen too the long note on rte and I am sure this came up once or twice.

  • he definately didnt its not that old at all! think maybe the 90s?

  • i think this is the funniest song in existance! and such a wonderfully done version of it this is.

  • There's a vid of Mythbusters available here Youtube. Just browse for it. By the way, I couldn't decide between laughing or screaming in compassionate pain listening to Sean Cannon and this dry-houmured song, interpreted with such seriousnes...

  • This is the best reason to be sick ever. =)

  • this is actually done at mythbusters but they didn't mention the song .... i wish i had the recordings of Mythbusters and i'll put the music behind it :P

btw it is a plausable "myth"

  • HA love this song...i bought their cd for my mum for mothers day :S

  • Its funny

  • lol...

1:06-1:07 some guy in the audience: "I love you!"

    Anyway, it's a cute irish song ;)

  • wow!! nice find haha!!

  • Fucckin love this Song..

    Sgwaaaaan

  • Ireland is the country with the lovliest stereotypes in world :)

  • Hahahahahahahahaha

  • pure irish hahah

  • i remember sean cannon singing this at EDEN COURT THEATRE ,INVERNESS many years ago,

    PURE CLASS

  • I'm from inverness!

  • This sounds very painful and very stupid. Exactly the type of thing I'd do after a bottle of soda and three extra large Pixi Stixs.

  • I wont be at work today alrite

  • fantastic, i love the Dubliners.

  • super song, much better than the weird american version. "a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me" haha sadly the type of thing I figure out when it's too late :D

  • true me top 10 too

  • Genius!

  • This is the Dubliners.

  • Comment removed

  • your a nut case this is the best version i've ever heard and i'm going around a long time

  • this is the dublineres not the wolfetones

  • who said it was the wolftones??

  • freddiesa

  • he/she should be shot!!

  • One of my top 10 songs. :D

  • Oh god i feel the pain hes going through from the way he sings it. I'm from Ireland and i sing the song identical to him cos i love the way he sings it.. I have it down to a t!!

  • You can find what I believe is the original of this story in the fifties at the Oxford Union speech by Gerrard Hoffnung on you tube. Far funnier than any musical rendition by the master.

  • FUNNY WITH IRISH ACCENT

  • I'm Dutch but i still can understand it.. It's just like english only they talk like they got kicked in the nuts :D:D!

  • It has a reason. Sean speaks with an Irish accent. So, he has to speak/sing like this, otherwise the foreigners wouldn't understand him.

  • this song was not wrote with Dutch people in mind.Lay off da wakky bakky!!

  • obviously your comment was not written with grammar in mind. Learn to speak your own language before you criticize someone else's.

  • Irish is my language dickhead. And why would I give a shite about grammar on Utube.Lighten up and take a joke.. Ya dutch tosser.

  • If you can understand this as a foreigner (as myself) it's really funny :P

  • Agreed :-)

  • Best versions of THIS song by Sean here, or by Robbie O'Connell (with the Clancys)

  • hahahahah how gud is thisssss x

  • Lovin it.

  • Get yerselves a drink o' the strong stuff...and have a good laugh at this...

  • If you ever watch a U.S. TV show called "MythBusters" look for the episode where they enact this scenario. I was lucky enough to have heard this song before i saw this show. What a great laugh, seeing "Buster" the dummy enduring every hurt and injury described in this song! It could happen. Thanks for posting this one!

  • I hadn't heard it before, but as I first listened to it, I immediately thought of Buster :) (I'm a huge fan of the Mythbusters)

and of this song of course, it's so great, and I love the way he sings it, his voice and the accent .. it's so great!
