This is pretty cool, but I don't think it's a great level. The puzzle is hard, and some of the things you do are very cool, but I don't think it's explained well. A good puzzle lets the player know what their goal is. Watching you, I never really knew why you were doing certain things.
In short, cool map, but not a great puzzle for the average player.
Portal is supposed to take place in a test facility where they put people in unbelievably difficult puzzle chambers to see how they adapt to using the portal gun to accomplish goals.
Thanks for complimenting the level, but in my own defense, I think this level lives up to the authentic idea of the game before the twist in the storyline came out.
When I saw Portal, I did not see a casual game. I was expecting hard core mind boggling puzzles that were hard to complete.
@BrandonC3 Oh, I know that there's no problem with a challenge. I just think a puzzle should have some direction. A player should walk in and think "oh, I need to push that button!" What they have to do to push it can be very challenging, but they should at least know what they have to do.
Basically, I was confused while watching this. I didn't know why you were doing what you were doing. But hey, you're not selling this to anyone. Make maps you like to play.
actually, i think portal maps should let you know what the objective is, without telling you how to reach it. you shouldnt be able to walk into a room and think "ok i need to press that button then i get out" it needs to be more like "ok, so there is two buttons, and one box, i have thought this through and understand how i am going about this, but am unsure on what changes will occur if said buttons are pressed."
I agree with this completely; there is absolutely no way anyone would ever figure out everything that is needed to be done and the places needed to be gone to. Impressive design, yes, but it's esoteric in the most insane form.
There's a reason puzzles are intuitive. I could watch this video ten times and would still have trouble trying to figure out how to complete this map.
Seems a little bit TOO hard to be an official map.
Portal isn't about baffling the player with the overused technique of having the player shoot two portals next to eachother on the floor, going in one, and coming back out just to not land on a ledge that was TOO far away to reach. It's about entertaining the player with puzzles that flow.
Yes, flow. They need to be possible to whiz through, be easy to figure out. Stumping the player usually isn't the best idea.
Whenever I first saw the trailer to this game years ago, I was quite disappointed at how easy the puzzles in the actual game were. This game to me and a ton of other people, essentially a 3D maze slash obstacle course with a very unique twist that added a lot of new possibilities to rejuvenate the whole idea of what a 3D maze could be.
To each their own, however my map is no less significant because it doesn't abide by your opinion of what this game should be. :)
@BrandonC3 I agree with Crystal1010, enimen1022, and ZapHappy1 about it being to alabret and dificult. I barly knew what you were doing, a portal test should be disigned to make you think how your going to solve it... there is no real way to solve these maps... and portal maps aren't really made with the notion that you have to go through certain steps just to win... instead they are disigned to test people on how they solve it... but your's is just not practicle. @krontor98 Thank you. Your feedback was very descriptive and makes a lot of sense. I will defiantly keep it in mind for my future projects. Very much appreciated. ^_^
Hey, just downloaded and played that map. Wow! It's hard. I had to keep referring to this vid to see what I was doing wrong. Very well made as well. A lot of detail.
Some nice innovations to the puzzles as well. Like the one where you have to pick up the box to get behind the glass to get it to the button...well, it's hard to explain.
Any way, fantastic job. How long did it take? what tools you use? Wouldn't be surprised if they hired you to do mapping for portal 2.
Thank you. Grade A response right there. I love hearing this kind of stuff about my work.
It took me probably around a month total time to make the map because I improvised the whole time, however this month was scattered across a year of constantly taking breaks.
I actually just used the toolkit that comes with the orange box. You should definantly check out a site called 3D Buzz, they have excellent tutorials on how to make maps with it.
this is a truly massive map. possibly to massive, but i guess it is only for hardcore fans of portal. very nice. and i dont think that watching it will ruin it. it is to complicated to remember.
i dont think glados herself could solve this

Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent map, but it is kind of a "Pro" map. And I'm not a pro... >.>
Sorry if I offended you.

And this is a example of a map that only pros can do easily. I tried, but I got lost after about 5 mins ;-)
Nice design, ideas and trick btw. I give it 5/5, but in general, it's nice to keep the map short. But you can go for however long you want, really ...

There are some sound clips from Glados, but they're just a few of a small hand full of little easter eggs I hid throughout the map.
