  • hi brilliant singer great voice thumbs up . Noel

  • I do not care what anyone says. There is no one in the music world today 2012 that can compare to the 1960's singers. Especially Helen Shapiro, and this video is living proof...

    Thank you Helen...... Sir David

  • @sixtiesforever1966 yeah it cant compare... Because record companies held any kind of recording equipment there was so any music that was heard was under every whim of a rich white guy who decided who got to record what and who became famous.

  • Never get bored with her..Another E.T.?

  • Helen Shapiro would put todays so called singers to shame. Now here is a woman with a voice

Even today in 2011 her music still stands the test of time. Love You Helen....Sir David

  • The blond chick in the front looks like she doesnt even care!

  • @summerandsasha that's vicki pollard's mum

  • THE REAL THING SUPER SUPER NICE .

  • HELEN SHAPIRO ! She puts todays singers to shame, Today so called singers need to go on stage almost naked and with so much electronics I'm surprised no one gets electrocuted... Sir David

  • It looks very much like Amy Winehouse, both physically and in his voice. Go look bigger!

  • I was listening to Elvis while my super painted my kitchen today. He started telling me about seeing JAILHOUSE ROCK when it played in Barbados where he's from. I asked him who the popular girl singers were and he said, "Connie Francis, Brenda Lee and Helen Shapiro." I'd never heard of her. Then he brought me her greatest hits CD and I downloaded most of it, but this one wouldn't burn.

  • I saw someone refer to this track as 'suggestive'. Well it's hardly Wayne County and the Electric Chairs but maybe for the time.....

  • All the boys then wanted to be her king for a night.

  • Byla skvělá ve filmu " It's Trad Dad " z r. 1962.

  • I love this song

  • queen helen is a UK treasure !!! lovely girl with a great voice - worldwide superhit -

a great ambassador for the UK !!!

    she made musical history

  • who cares if she looks coloured... in SouthAfr she was famous for his swingy voice and accent singing the blues she s SUPER¡- many jewish girls at the time looks like her cause of tanned exposition risking being classified coloured by public opinion..who cares now?

  • I love this....miss shapiro is one of my fav's!

  • She does have the voice of a frog. LOL

  • @motelcalifornia never heard frogs sing....

  • @Koekie0812 They sound like Helen Shapiro

I think all frogs came from Russia

  • @motelcalifornia but not all russians are frogs...so it does not add up!

  • @motelcalifornia How does she have the voice of a frog?

  • @sapphiretaurus Low register. Deep voice. Too manly. Next contestant, please.

    LOL

  • I read that she's from Russian Jewish ancestry but she really looks African to me...does she have any African blood? She even sounds black

  • @gmwoodworth , yes, but she is a Cristian.

  • @teendude16 She's actually a Messianic Jew. Pretty close, though.

  • @wolfmanjim , Hello thank you for the information.

  • @gmwoodworth She is Jewish,as am I she was and is a credit to the British Jewish Community in East London she had the greatest voice of all the 1960s singers few have ever matched her

  • @burnley5960 Your comment sounds slightly hostile/defensive. I wasn't asking whether or not she is Jewish or criticizing her ancestry but asking whether she is also mixed-race (African) as both her voice and features suggest.

  • OMG I BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG LIKE FOREVER...... (:

  • Amy Winehouse X10 = 1 Shapiro

  • @bluexxg Try X 5000000000 = 0.5 !!!!!

  • @burnley5960 Bunley in Spanish popular theatre of XIX century 1 chapiro was a green bill of 1000 pesetas.&.you need 1000 shakiras to have 1 shapiro

  • Y Love Helen Shapiro

  • we keep hunderts ofher records in South Africa in 60s both white n blackie

  • go to popcorn oldies thierry59

  • helene chapiro chante "tout ce quil voudra" genial chanson

  • SHE IS ONE BEAUTIFUL LADY WITH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE!

  • This is one of my favorite oldie, thanks for sharing!

  • Just started to use You Tube it is great can play all my old favorites

  • Where is she originally from? Where did she achieve fame at?

  • @odin332211 She comes from East London and was about 14 at the time 1960 and was one of the very best, not many have ever matched her despite what some people on You Tube Say

  • @odin332211 Bethnal Green, London

  • I'm surprised that Helen never achieved any fame in the USA in the '60s. Her voice is fantastic, and this song has a completely American sound too, in both the music and the backup singers. Yet in the US, we never heard of her. Too bad; our loss.

  • Terry Wogan in the class there ?...nah.

  • FAAAACKKKK SHES GO T THE BIGGETS HEAD IN THE WORLD

  • Oh no! Amy Winehouse isn't an original? I'm only learning about Helen Shapiro today. She's the first Amy Winehouse!

  • One of my fave records of the 60's and loved many of your other uploads too.

Thanks Steve who used to be in London.

  • Piękna piosenka.Moja młodość.

  • Had a great voice? She still has~~~

  • She had a great voice - and an awesome reputation for being very difficult to work with.

  • a great big "WAW"!!!!

  • My mum actually grew up 2 be best friends with her and she is still a huge part of my life like an aunty and she is still recording I have her new cd

  • This is amazing!

  • Re: Why do they speak horrible English? from Kissol.

Perhaps they dont want to be associated with Israel.

  • Pour mon petit arbitre adoré

  • Whoa, not bad. I honestly thought of Helen Shapiro as being goofy before. I've revised my opinion. I don't care for this style of music, but she does have a great voice.

  • this song was polpular in 1964 , my last day at Primary 6 at King George V school ,Sban , Malaysia, our last day fare well classs party , I remember a pretyy Malay girl sang this song. Till this day

  • @philipng37 Nice to know that I am not the only one in KGV Seremban to love this song. Helen was beautiful in her style. Very RARE. We are grateful for those who managed to record her on TV . God Bless BRO . Georgion

  • THANKS so much for sharing this treasure of a tune! Ms Shapiro is such an amazing performer. Powerful voice & quite charismatic! Gotta love that 1960's bouffant hair! Cute how they have 'schoolroom" setting with the boys & girls in their "uniforms" & paying rapt attention.

  • Amy Weinhaus und Shapiro Helen are both ashkenazi jews, they are very similar of course. I do not understand why they do not speak jiddish why this horrible english.

  • Christ! Amy Winehouse is right...looks like her and sounds like her. She's the daughter of Russian-Jewish immigrants and in the 80's became a messianic Jew (believer in Jesus).

  • I think the secret of the success of Helen Shapiro was that she had the look and the voice of a porn star.

Even before anyone knew what it is.

I mean isn't she radiates sex all over her or what?

  • @1KSarah You said it BRO.

  • @zakikhan52

    Thank you.

I think my response should get more thumbs up.

    It's very observant.

  • its hard to believe she became a jazz singer

  • @lottosbaby Yes an absolute waste of her sensational talent.

  • Sharky celle là est pour toi

  • she has my prayers trailboyus66 God Bless her and you

  • bloody hell i know a girl who looks and sounds like her

  • Absolutely enchanting , typifies the period young and sexy husky and power-full whats not to love about Helen ??

First time I saw Amy Winehouse , the similarity was so obveous ,

Helen you are simply Brilliant ,

  • Amy Winehouse looks like her

  • I like her boufant hairstyle

  • Can someone tell me if this song is really from 1963? Her hairstyle here resembles the same from the "Walking Back to Happiness" footage from 1961. Did Helen have a bit of a change in her hair-do in '63? The "Look Who It Is" footage from Ready Steady Go makes it appear HS went through a bit of a makeover.

  • "Queen for Tonight" was Helen`s first hit of 1963. It reached No33. She would have been 16/17 years of age. Probably did receive a "Make Over" from when she was 14. Looks and sounds good.

Billy Fury recorded a song called "King For Tonight".

  • Both Helen and Amy are of Russian Jewish families. Wow those eyes are dead sexy.

    Sx

  • Very Cute!

  • Nice voice. Was she in her mid-teens when she sang this?

  • Helen was 17 when she recorded this song.

  • Super une très bonne époque pour la création.

  • TU AS RAISON :) !!!!!!!

  • Amazing voice. If I was hearing her voice for the first time I would never have guessed she was a small white girl.

  • Hey, Annet48, Amy W`s voice is no where near as good as Helens voice.

  • Great voice.....rather like on Amy Winehouse))))))

  • @annet48 Actually Amy Winehouse is remaking the Helen Shapiro essence.

  • Bons tempos !

  • Fantastic voice, silly song, truly bizarre classroom setting and funny face at 0:46.

  • It's a splendidly wonderful silly song and at 0:46 she's ACTING! - giving the royal wave to masses up in the stands and perhaps also seeing jewels dangling from her crown whilst giving the wave! Huzzah!

  • Yes I will I still think her voice is great the very best the UK has ever had,as I said she is a great credit to Bethnal Green and East London I have spoken to many people over the years and having been good friends with the former wife of a very famous drummer,Im not going to name drop I can tell you she is still held in very high regard in the United Kingdom.

  • thank you burnley5960 i hope you will attend a gospel outreach with helen. i would if i could come to england. i hope she is able to visit the u.s. sometime next year. i said in one of my recent mesages to her that she may yet become a classic in america.i totally agree with what you've said.

  • As an English Man and A Jew she was and is a credit to both my country and my community I still love her voice I wish she would come back and show the so called stars how to do it the likes of Maddona arnt fit to kiss her feet

  • find helen's website and find out for yourself what a great and nice lady she is. blessed be the lord God. who alone does wonderful things.

  • thank you burnley 5960 for support. i also need to point out that when helen was on her way to the top with her first 3 hits she beat all competition, including elvis.and did it at the age of 14. i call that bitchin'-charisma supreme.

  • Is it just me.....or is that Amy Winehouse's mother?????

  • No and Helen was a lot better she was only 14 years old here!!!!!

  • today at the age of 63 helen is still the most beautiful and sings as great as ever. her gospel cd's of the last 15 years prove it. i salute helen shapiro, a great lady who was never into drugs and is devoutly religious. england's sweetheart, whoop-bah-oh-yeh-yeh

  • So true No One has ever matched Helen Shapiro, yes Dusty was good and Sandie Shaw was great as was and is Pet Clark but at forteen the Girl from East London, was better than them all the Americans can say what they like and I love Ronnie Spectors voice but Helen had ten times the voice people say the likes of Cass Elliot were better or from the modern era people like Celine Dion NEVER Helen would blow the whole lot away.

  • this is a two part comment i agree with burnley5960 and oldies1960's. helen was the most beautiful young woman in the world.and the greatest singer of all time. if some change in context had occured the screaming girls of 1964 would have given helen that excitement.

  • The first time I saw Helen was in the movie "It's Trad Dad." I thought somebody had screwed around with the soundtrack to make a girl sound like a guy. But it's really her voice. Just like the first time I heard Wayne Newton sing "Danke Schoen" on the radio. I thought it was a girl. This isn't a criticism. I have a CD of Helen's greatest hits. She is wonderful!!

  • AN AMAZING TALENT !!!!!!!

  • More than a match for anyone from the USA

  • Great Video. Helen you are so beautiful. 5 Stars.

  • yup deeper than lesley gore's

  • Thought this was awesome the first time I watched it, now it is kinda scary. She does have a deep voice!

  • I see this video for the first time....so beautiful !!!

  • Тумороу сказать не могу наверняка, тудэй же у тёти Хелены всё просто замечательно :)

  • Great video !!! She was a UK treasure!

  • That's bull shit!

  • You are talking rubish Helen was our greatest female singer more than a match for anything from the USA at 14 years old.

  • kkkkkkk

  • Helen is alive and well. No as far as I know she is not a Lesbian... She is very religious. She is so conservative so much so; she won't even perform her oldies songs anymore.

I have did some searching under Helen Shapiro and found out about her life today.

Helen if you read this; it is just fine to sing your oldies. I don't find anything offensive with any of your music. I find it inspiring.

That could even open a door to be a witness to those who are not religious.

  • Helen Shapiro + Janice (Friends) = Amy Winehouse

  • @FeStinkaHouse That's pretty bad! LOL

  • Do i see envy in that first girl's eyes?

  • :))

  • to 80istwithoutborders:

no, you see a teenagers secret fantasies!!!

  • @80istWithoutBorders she looks like ugh i hate you! haha

  • Helen really looked like my cousin Beverly Benson who is 63 now. Bev has

a brain tumor and needs all the prayers we can send up for her.

The other night; I told Bev about Helen looking like her in the videos and Bev thought that was really neat.

I was very young in the early 60's 5 in 63. My cousins are from 63-77 years old this year. I have been a fan of Hermans Hermits and The Beetles. I also like Maxine Nightingale from 1975/76.

    Thanks for an incredible video.

  • @trailboyus66 Any idea about the back ground of Helen . Where did she take music lessons.

  • @zakikhan52 Gosh I am not sure. I thought her music was played in America but according to several people it was only played in Britian. I have an Aunt named Helen who will be 91 in March who has been in a nursing home for several years.

My aunt's children are all older than Helen Shapiro. They were young people when this type of music was poplular.

  • @trailboyus66 Thanks BRO. We in Malaysia ie Far EAST ,loved to hear on the old LP black vinel records in Music City outlets

  • that girl on the right made her look older

  • What a powerhouse voice- she was only about 15 here.

  • was - refers to has been or dead.

    It does make a difference.

  • Very good!

  • don't care for the song, but she has a nice voice. She could resemble Amy Winehouse, but wrong continent.

  • Amy Winehouse is portraying Helen Shapiro

  • helen is the best

  • なんか声がお腹の底から出し切ってる感じがして、聞いていて、とても気持ちが良いです。

  • I have't heared this song for 40 + years . maybe in 1960's. What a strong , soulful and husky voice - fantastic singing & song. Love it

    Phillip Ng/ Malaysia

  • @tanlaysan So they say beautiful songs never die .Zaki Seremban

  • Great sound...CEM-TURKEY

  • thanks uploading this video *****

  • She was a talent, her music is timeless.

  • What do you mean 'she WAS a talent'?

She is still alive! And may I say going strongly in London's jazz clubs. ;-)

  • It's a phrase, an expression.

  • Yes, an incorrect expression. Using the past tense to describe someone still alive is a no-no in polite circle. But I'll let you off this once. Lol! ;-)

  • She was a talent when I was growing up. She was a talent that I grew up with., Learn English.

  • Whew! Someone fell out of the wrong side of the bed this morning! Cool it. It's not worth getting worked up over something as trivial as this. ;-) Peace.

  • Great stuff.

  • u can say she's the lesley gore of the uk

  • yesss

  • Not so far as we know...or is she?

  • I know a little about Helen and her lifestyle and it does not include substance abuse or an extravagent life style. I have a right to admire Helen for her music, and life. This is a Helen Shapiro thread, isn't it. Why not post your Amy Winehouse opinions on her videos, where your opinions would have more merit. Music is a matter of opinion. Helen was one of my favorite singers, which is why I posted comments here. Much of Helen's music is from 1960's &70's, Amy from 2000's, different audience

  • No, my comments are right at home right here. If you use one singer's problems to extol the virtues of another's vocal technique and "life" then the object of your scorn is due some support. I came here to hear some Shapiro but your Winehouse comments needed a response. This "different audience" you suggest would irritate both singers. The Helen that 'I know' would love to get her vocals around some of Winehouse's material (ESPECIALLY the lyrics). They have far more in common than you suppose.

  • your wrong she was hooked on the most addictive drug known and she took it 60 times a day thats a fact.

  • prove it

  • i dont need to prove it, she would admit it herself she has many times, iv met her twice and she is a lovley woman, but she was addictied to the worlds no 1 killer drug.

  • I disagree. In my opinion, Amy Winehouse is not a great singer. Helen had a purer voice and I prefer the lyrics to her songs. I don't comment on Amy Winehouse videos, but reserve the right to comment about Amy Winehouse on videos of other singers when Amy Winehouse comments are posted. I also prefer Helen's life style to Amy Winehouse's, Just my opinion.

  • Though I strongly disagree with it, I've no problem with your "Winehouse sucks" comment but your referral to "substance abuse problems" and "lifestyle" seems, unless you know either singer personally, judgmental and presumptuous.

  • In my opinion, Helen Shapiro was an outstanding singer and Amy Winehouse kind of sucks. As far as I know, Helen did not have any of the substance abuse problems that Amy has.

  • Not that we know about anyway. The press was far less intrusive in Shapiro's time. For all we know, as soon as filming in this classroom finished, young Helen may have rushed away to her needle and spoon. Unlikely, judging by her zesty demeanor... but possible all the same! What do drugs have to do with anything? Shapiro & Winehouse are both great singers.

  • nice :)

  • I'm not sure why this was sent to my email, but Amy Winehouse came to mind. I am not saying this like it's a bad thing.

  • There was a definite and conscious hommage in Amy Winehouse's presentation. AW was a sort of caricature of HS in her eye makeup and huge beehive. And Amy sings fake-black and Helen sort of did too (though this was partly because of the songs that were chosen for her). Finally, there's the throaty timbre and gutsy panache.

  • who what a voice, is she a lesbian by any change?

  • no, she's married to John Judd.

  • so?

  • you asked if she was a lesbian. no. she isn't she's happily married.

  • This song certainly doesn't allude to THAT ?

  • You're right but her voice ...

  • I thought "happily married" was a phrase exclusive to comedians and cynics. But if she is happy, then jolly good. I totally understand the lesbian inquiry though. If she were making records today, with THAT amazing voice, she'd be lesbian iconic.

  • Magic

  • I've never seen this Helen Shapiro clip!

  • Cool!!!

  • Excellent! First time I've heard this one.

  • What a great pick-up line: I'll make you a queen for tonight...

  • Que bueno........

  • A true classic! To think that i saw her on stage in Oliver! in the London Palladium where the Beatles once played to the queen mom. Great memories. Thank u!

  • I'm old enough to remember when the Beatles were her supporting act on tour in the north of England. That was '62-'63 or thereabouts. Even up north she was bigger than them in those days. As you can see from this vid, she was a real beauty, with a six-cylinder voice. Fabulous.
