  • It was 1977,Chicago,winter, I was 7 years old diagnosed with severe bronchial pneumonia to be placed in a plastic bubble at Wyler's hospital for children- very scared to death.I remember so vividly listening to WJPC radio station owned by Johnson Publishing Company when I heard this song by Brothers Johnson,"Strawberry Letter 23" playing.I forgot at that moment I was seriously ill and just let myself be lost in the music. To this day,at age,42,I still suffer with lung problems.I'm alive.

  • I saw Brothers Johnson perform Live- and they were Great at the Tom Joyner Flashback Festival in the ATL.

  • This was, strike that, is the best song ever. Brings back memories of friends and me, riding in the summertime. We were always trying to figure out what song was about. We all came to same conclusion, it was the best !!! Best of Times!!!

  • @Nikh50 2pac sampled this song.

  • this was my acid trippin song cherokee baby

  • Man this song brings back memories of cookouts, laughter and good time with family and friends. It's amazing how a song can take you right back to that moment like it was yesterday,

  • my fav song evah!!!

  • I just need my skates

  • @alphamoon65sun

damn you brought back some memories of MY skatin days and now I gotta find mine!

  • @Nikh50 Yes, I am hard to aurgue with.. Cause, I really dont like fighting with the mentaly challenged.. I was always told its not their fault. You keep going, I will answer, and put you even more under the bus. So, euphemistically, I hope you do listen to music that isn't all voice computer controled, and all sampled.. I just can't wait for something original to show it's ugly head again. So remember it was 1993, and no the cafe isnt on fire.. The sample was from Kano, a song called I'm Ready.

  • whats the difference between strawberry letter 22 and 23?

  • yes, the good old day's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gosh i was in high school! luv yuz then- luv yuz now

    Cally, '78

  • love it 74 bird

  • @Nikh50 I love the name calling, it shows such a high Intelligence.. So, that sinks your credibility.. SO, I have one more Sesame Street letter for you.. F... Fries. As put in a sentence for you might comprehend ... "Would like fries with that?" As I bow out of this stimulating physical, mental, and emotional vigor of conversation.. Its been an educational few days with you.. Not saying I'm right, or your wrong.. You make that decision on your own.. Just watch the name calling.

  • One of the best songs ever made

  • One of the best songs ever made

  • @Nikh50 Learn to spell, type, and get back to me.. You're very mentaly unarmed to deal with my capacity of thinking of music. As for the "Flute" Stop watching American pie.. It's a movie not a documentary..

But. will answer a question of your Sesame Street thinking.. M is for music, S is for sampling, and O is for Originality.. Something that you have no Idea about.. SO, my advice to you, crawl under your drum machine until you change your attitude.

  • @Nikh50 You need to back off with the F Bombs on me. I have forgot more music than you will ever know, or heard of. You think sampled music is an art form? What about making something original? I guess you didn't think before you pulled your Mom's tit outa your mouth! Go back, and learn something. OR learn to read music, I can, learn to play an instrument, I can 5 of them. And when you get to where I am in the knowledge of music, {not sayin' I know everything} But, you 27.. I guess your short.

  • That's some of the most badass old school funk bass you'll ever hear kids!

  • @sevenheven7 :

    lol! very true!

  • @sevenheven7 YOU KNOW IT BROTHER!!! I WAS 8 YEARS OLD WHEN THIS CAME OUT,,WOW WHAT A FUNKY HIT IT WAS!!

  • This is one of the greastest jams of all time my friends!

  • THIS HERE PULP FICTION EXCERPT SCARES THE SHAGMELON SHITLESS THIS IS THE FIFT-NINTH TIME I'VE HEARD THIS SONG BTW

  • This song makes me want to buy another Cadillac

  • THANK YOU !!!!!!!

  • I GOTTA ASK,,HOW DO PEOPLE GET STRAWBERRY LETTER 23 FROM THIS???? IT'S STRAWBERRY LETTER 22?? LISTEN TO THE CHORUS!! I MEAN,,,HELLO?????? BY THE WAY,,THIS TUNE HIT THE AIRWAVES APRIL OF 1976. REAL BIG HIT IN ALL THE DISCOS.

  • @EXTIQUE Check your history. This song was first recorded in 1972, it wasn't a hit at that time. The Brothers Johnson recorded their version of it in '76-'77.

  • @harenchi absolutely correct...

  • This song is slicker than a babys chin!

  • who sampled what because beyonce's id rather be with you has this rhythm

  • Nice intro. Love how the music comes in...

  • this song is awsome listening to it on a vinal record with headphones

  • Nize

  • The Brothers Johnson were really cool cats. And the song is great

  • The great Louis Johnson on Bass. Guitarist Lee Ritenour did that fat Azz Guitar solo on this track. When this Album came out, I was a Junior at Mumford High School in Detroit Michigan. I was playing the Eelctric Guitar in Mumford's Stage band at the time. Kids back then took music very seriously as musicians. We had to study music. We had to take appiled music theory. And then practice our Azz off on our chosen musical instrument. And take vocal training as well. This was the norm then. MG

  • This is way before my time and i still prefer this over newer music

  • Intro & Outro are connected... Brilliant!!!

  • i agree the intro kicks some serious ass!!

  • @Visalia13

Yeah the intro was sick with it :).

  • DAMN that's good!

  • Gangsta cutt right cheer...

  • Funk You Very Much!

  • one of the best

  • best part is the intro of the song!!!!love it...

  • i listen to alot of genres. And funk is the best genre for bass playing without a doubt.

  • THIZ SONG DOES MY HEART SO GOOD

  • Ohh hot momma

  • Who the hell didn't like this great remake of a Shuggy Otis song Strawberry Letter 23?! Somebody does not know good or even great music!

  • I wish people would realize that the public education system does not care about exposing students to life enriching environments

  • One of the great classic R & B love songs of the 70's. But to me it will always remind of

"Odell" getting ready to give "Beaumont" a long, long "dirt nap"! lol

  • i hear you guys talking about schools/music programs. we wouldn't have quincy jones nor the brothers johnson if it weren't for public school music programs. CRAZY state of affairs.

  • Yes. Louis Johnson and Larry Graham were the shit on bass.

  • The world would be a better place

If everyone picked up a bass

  • Please, Bass players unite. If U can't get this put ur axe in the corner

    n let it collect dust!

  • I luv this song!!! classic music, talented musicians!!!

  • classic shit

  • I was in 8th grade when this song came out. It's one of the best! Music of that time was comparatively better than much of today's because artists were more cerebral. They knew how to take heady topics and present them to the masses in a way that was appealing. That's a true gift. When the music is better, society is generally better. I agree with VtachDJchris that children benefit from music education.

  • i love the bothers of johnson.

  • Shuggie Otis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Im 28 years old and Ive loved this song since I was SEVEN YEARS OLD!!! Their playing it right now in a book cafe so I had to pull it up! McAWESOME<----

  • @TheESMERALDI

    Cool :)

  • @TheESMERALDI I have also loved this song a long time, since I was about 17 -- when it first came out! I have to tell you I just accidentally clicked on one of your Youtube videos, but stayed and watched. The "drag queen" video is so great. Thank you. This 50-year-old White gay guy thinks you are adorable. AND fabulous!

  • 11 thumbs down fools who don't know good music.

  • @HipHopcheerleader perfect! an 8 y.o. tryin' to tell us what good music is!!!!!

  • @HipHopcheerleader yo man, this is the root of all the music today. this is the shit! if u dont like this song or this type of music, then you dont know what music is. this right here started our music in todays generation

  • why didn't they have more hits??? this song and STOMP are off the chain.

  • I want this to be my wedding song

  • BJ Rulz!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  • George Johnson, Louis Johnson, Lee Ritenour, Quincey Jones et al -

    I salute you.

    Again.

  • ive been looking for this song for many years. i love it . thanks.

  • The brother johnson were more than just gitar players than were writer, promoter

gifted and my band love them

  • @macksfischer

He was about 25 years ahead of his time back in the 70's. I could not believe when I first heard the album Inspiration Information that it was recorded in the early 70's.

  • This was one of the first albums I ever owned back in the day.... Wow!

  • Is this number about a inmate tripping in his crib?...........1 of the best funk songs ever

  • Not big on the double salute as the song starts but like the Movie (Pam Grier vehicle)REF and the Bro's J song of course is EPIC

  • One of my greatest brothers of all time song!! Got nothing but love for him!! Do your thing Scottie Too Hottie!! One of my favs too!! Remember those days brother!! USDA

  • Shuggie OTIS..............the originator

  • This was really a great tune.I remember coming from Ammendola's Pizzeria in Yonkers N.Y.I had my slice and then picked up the Daily News for mom and read that the Son of Sam had struck again.this song was playing in the pizzeria. My first thought was "well Iam 12 and not making out in cars yet so I hope they get this creep before I DO start making out in cars to great jams like this and many, many more.lol

  • I was in the 9th grade Jr. High School when I first heard this song and LOVED it so much that I bugged my cousin who is 8 yrs. my senior and in New York at the time to PLEASE send me the single to which was those 12" and it came in the color red(for Strawberry) and smelt like too! LOL! To this day when she hears this song she says: There's your Strawberry song! and strongly connects this to me for what will be the rest of my life! Awesome time period for music in those days. EW&F baddest band 2!

  • @SouhernNightingGale I had the Strawberry Disc too (and yes, it was strawberry scented)! Good memories o 1977! This song impressed me so much, I actually wrote the lyrics down. But, to my surprise, I found out in 2004 that they lifted this song from Shuggie Otis....The Brothers' Johnson's version is more dynamic, but I only wish that they had given credit to the original...

  • Dave Letterman often has his bandleader Paul Schaffer play 'Strawberry Letter 23' when they go off to commercial. They love this song!

  • Hearing this takes me back to when I used to play this song on my mom's console stereo. I thought it was the coolest record I ever saw, a transparent strawberry colered 12 inch.

  • If only I had TIME MACHINE. I would go back to 1968 and continue to 1980. Then hit the Rewind Button. I would never leave that 12 year span. Just LOOP me over and over again. I'd never see 2010! hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    PEACE YA'LL

  • @ddesign63 You so CRAZY! But the TRUTH is I feel the same way! Amen! Music like that is literally HISTORY and CLASSIC! Too bad todays' artist haven't a clue to what music like that is or even begin to comprehend it! It's a SHAME before GOD and mankind.

  • sl23 are u out there?

  • @Khultan Ibanese LR-10 Lee Ritenour Model, Schecter Telecaster, K.Yairi Earl Klugh Model Electric Gut Guitar, Fender Japan Stratcaster...etc

But, I don't have Gibson Les Paul "Black Beauty" as George.

  • @catsduke Wow, that's quite an arsenal of musical weaponry you got. I have two guitars, used to have an accoustic ($300.00 US dollars) an in-law had given it away. It was a gift from my mother. Now, I have the Stratocaster (which, you can see my very rudimentary guitar playing) and an Epiphane bass guitar given to me by a musician with early arthritis on the promise I would care for it. I have not broken that promise.

  • A Backing Guitar, muted riffs effected by Mu-tron Bi-phase played by Lee Ritenour !!

  • @catsduke You're a musician?

  • @Khultan No, only an amateur guitarist. But a great fan of Lee, Brothers Johnson and Quincy.

  • @catsduke What guitar do you have?

  • i still have this album- it still sounds great

  • ...and they even used REAL INSTRUMENTS!!!!!!! What the hell happened to music since then? R & B USED TO stand for rhythm and blues. I will never stop loving these grooves. It was a time when the height of creativity intersected with high fidelity.

  • @fun9luv exactly!! ;)

  • @kidubyub--Shuggie Otis, who wrote AND played all of the instruments on the original, wrote Strawberry Letter 23 AS the reply to his girlfriend's Strawberry Letter 22.

  • Hey kidubyub. You rule! I never knew the significance of the title till now. Thank you so much.

  • Wow,so good<Thanx for the story kidyubyub

  • DA BOMB !!!!!!

  • Beautiful 'ol school. Love it!

  • So Glad to hear my music from back in the day!Man,this was great then and still is awesome.Kids have no idea today about real music, sad for them but not for me!(HEE HEE)

  • Jackie Brown is the movie. Great flix BTW. Search the title and you can get a list of every tune played.

  • @agape4tube Hammersmith Odeon '77? me too !

  • A real classic. Funky and soulful with a hint of rebel. If this des not move your soul nothing will. Respect

  • Who compairs to this today?? NO ONE, this era is classic shit that will never be replaced. Instead of introducing our kids to the "pop corn" culture music of today introduce them to this so they will always know what real music is.

  • when he mentions strawberry letter 22 then you know this letter that he's writen bac is strawberry letter 23 you have to think this where your adult brains should come in

  • I was eating breakfast in a restaurant in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This song came on the juke box and I ask the waitress to dance to it. We danced to it all the way to the end and then I thanksed her and sat back down and finished my breakfast. I went back almost everyday for a month until she would go out with me. She said she never forgot that dance in the restaurant and that became our song until I went away to Marine Boot Camp. Ah Memories!

  • @hoosierarcher ......now that is a DOPE story! I bet she was fine. Was she?

Sounds kinda like the scene from the movie CAR WASH. hahaha

    PEACE

  • @ddesign63 She was Hotter than a dollar pistol! As they used to say back in the day.
