people really cannot hate on this one,,,,, i mean cmon... everybody knows they've always wanted to go to space and see the earth from above.... #JussSayin
Isn't that design too brittle to survive re-entry? I thought it would need heat tiles on the bottom as well, especially on the wing tails jutting out on the sides?
@swimfastfly27 asked if the design was too brittle and questioned if it needed heat tiles. the answer is, this craft was designed for cool re-entry with a lot of speed lost in the upper atmosphere before hitting the higher density and consequently hotter stratosphere.
@aviator147 Looks like the nose gear is designed to slow the aircraft by dragging and creating friction. It's angled back so it won't snap off, while the suspension handles any imperfections on the runway, and keeps downward pressure while the nose bounces around.
You sure need a good pilot to pilot the glider. Did you notice the angle it was coming in? The craft has to pull up at just the right moment to translate that speed into a nice glide ratio.
@directorphilip2 That was the prototype for a record to be the first civilian into space. This vehicle carries passengers. This was it's first flight.
@directorphilip2 The first flight where the ship was in the air attached to the larger craft was a while ago, but this as the first time that spaceship 2 had been gliding on its own.
@directorphilip2 The flight you mention six months ago was probably the first "capture carry" flight while this one was the first "unpowered drop test" flight. I was fortunate enough to be at Mojave for the third unpowered drop test on November 17, 2010 -- it was pretty cool!
@directorphilip2 That was the first flight where the spaceship bit (middle section) was still attached... this was the first flight where it detached and flew back down solo.

Admittedly, those ships really do fit into the modern look, I really hope to see these officially taking people into the air and beyond!

I loved seeing a Beech Starship flying shadow to SpaceShip2 and carrier. :) A big, happy, Rutan family.

@directorphilip2 The first one was the first flight of the mother ship alone. This is the first flight where the shuttle itself was released.

@directorphilip2 Probably the first captive carry flight is what you were thinking of.
They never released the space ship. It was still attached and they landed with it.
