Yes they are both great!!! I saw her in Berlin in this opera, just great even better than in the TV broadcasting and her voice can't be compared to a recording live. If you ever have the opportunity to see her live, do it!! Unfortunately he was ill, I think he must be as great live as her!! Thanks for posting!!

Netrebko inhabits this role and she's not trying as hard as she did in the Vienna production. Villazon is ideal: young, impetuous and swept away by passion. They are like a couple of kids onstage, which Des Grieuz and Manon are. Their voices are superb--and I'm glad this was taped opening night. Villazon was ill on May 9 and had to cancel. Bravi! and thank you!

I'm by no means an opera expert, so I will dispense with any petty naysayer remarks about interpretation and technique. All I can say is that when Netrebko & Villazon get together, it's their chemistry and connection with their music and audiences that make others stand up and take notice. They are gradually attracting mor and more new audiences to the opera world. Check out their La Traviata from 2005 - you won't be disappointed. Did I forget to say that they are both great singers?
