I saw Tal Farlow with the Steve Schmidt Trio at the Blue Wisp Fazz Club in Cincinnati in 1981. I sat about 10 feet away from him for a 3 hour set. He absolutely had the biggest hands I have ever seen on a guitar player. Very humble, sweet guy and what a monster player.
@philh37 - and Danny Gatton had the smallest hands I've ever seen on a guitar player......they were both monsters on the guitar! It's the size of the heart, not the hands, that counts.
Check out Tal with Charles Mingus and Red Norvo, I heard him live once and realized he was no regular academically trained jazz guitarist before I had the opportunity to hear him live. I've heard from one of his ex-students that Tal probably was experiencing hand problems which directly affected him as he grew older. Tal was a greatly gifted guitarist and real nice guy.
whats the difference? the amp aint gonna make you play any better, people need to worry about improving their playing, and stop worrying about nonsence, tell you what why dont you go out and buy a new amp ,and see if it makes you play better. . anyway tals guitar sounds like shit
Thanks Stevenmask. Although my curiosity was based out of genuine interest in both the historical aspects of jazz guitar tone and performance - I now realize you are completely correct. HIs guitar does "sound like shit" and I do need to "stop worrying about nonsence". Thank you so much for these valuable insights. I'll be sure to reference this youtube conversation on my next contribution to "Just Jazz Guitar" magazine.
