When you find out you have personalities, you are like, 'Something is wrong with me!' When I get triggered, I change personalities. I find the personality to deal with the trigger. Personalities hold dysfunctional beliefs, a denial about an issue and expression(s), thoughts and actions that were disallowed in childhood because of said belief system. Cause is mostly repeated abuse through childhood and lack of nurturing in order to develop the healthy ego.
DID's who hear voices or see/sense their alters sense them coming from inside or close to themselves. Schizoprenics who hear voices or see/sense people who are 'not really there'' sense them as coming from ouside or away from themselves.
Dissociative Identity Disorder is a stress disorder. Schizophrenia is a brain disorder. Medications that are prescribed for Schizophenia don't help with dissociative symptoms, even with what are termed auditory or visual hallucinations - when they can hear or they can see/sense their alter personalities. Some people with DID can remember all or part of the ''switching'' process. It's called co-consciousness. There are no medications that are prescribed for DID alone.
@chrispollock: people like you CAUSE mental illness, as well as ignorance in general. Mental illness is real and kills more people than Cancer, so go read a book or something.
ahem... This is a good video, thanks for sharing! :)
DID is more common than we acknowledge because childhood abuse and trauma is still very prevelent. IMO kids with dissociation are getting dignosed schizophrenic when they aren't. Also, dissociatives often repress memory and so ppl on the outside don't realize there is abuse happening.
I appreciate your addressing this issue. Following are my views. Similarities: 1. Sometimes people with both disorders hear voices. Not all people with DID hear voices, though. 2. People with both disorders often (if not always) know paranoia. Differences: 1. DID is a behavioral disorder. Schizophrenia is a chemical imbalance. 2. Paranoia for schizophrenic people is related to "unreal" auditory and/or visual experiences. 3. Paranoia for people with DID is related to real experiences.
I do know the differences because I happen to have MPD or DID. We hear voices in our head but schizophrenic people think they are queens and kings and hear voices outide their head. They are not living in there here and now as we multiples are. If you put a multiple and a schizo side-by-side you would see the difference as night and day.
@clifton062 In response to the e-mail RE sent to me: Radio waves, radiation, and other things also can't be seen with your run-of-the-mill microscope. I'd like to see your references on the statement you left, if you wouldn't mind sharing. Other machines are necessary to identify some mental disorders. There are proven differences in the brain's functionality from person to person, and ESPECIALLY from "regular" people to those with mental disorders.
There is no such thing as a mental disorder. period. its all lies to sell drugs. You can control your mind. your not disabled, wake up! welcome to the real world. theres nithing wrong with you, dont look for a cop out
@clifton062 Well THAT was an extremely ignorant statement. You must have absolutely no experience in the matter. Mental disorders have been PROVEN, Clifton. You can't deny fact. Look it up! Do research! When you can't control your mind, maybe you'll get it. Brains, like every part of the body, can't come out perfect with every birth. There are bound to be certain malfunctions from brain to brain- that's seems perfectly obvious to me. Downs Syndrome includes degrees of mental disorder. RESEARCH.
A person with DP/DR/DID notices a change in their perception of self and the world, and feels distressed by this. They may also think they are going crazy, although they don't have psychotic symptoms. A person with schizophrenia often has no insight, and doesn't believe they are ill. They don't often notice a change in themselves, rather family members do.
The DSM-IV isn't just a random psychology text book. Its THE book on diagnosing mental disorders. Even with this book to use as guidelines for diagnosis, it is still very difficult to get a clear and accurate diagnosis, because it's so specific. Sometimes people go without true diagnosis because they don't fit the exact criteria. So...have you been officially diagnosed? If so, I believe you. If not, be careful with that.
@Jadarius9524 Hi. I see that you posted 6 mo. ago, but do you still want to talk about it?
2 personalities seems odd. I know that the DSM says "two or more" blah blah blah, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and argue with the almighty DSM. There are always 3 or more. There is always at least one young child, always one protector who can be disagreeable, and always one "normal" or normal-ish person, at least.
There are usually more altars that are not yet noticed.
I think while you're being depersonalized, you change faces a lot because you're crumbling, and that's why the two get mixed up. In and out because it's gradual. Delusions come. You don't feel like yourself. Toast. I don't know if that's what happened, but I think it is. Apathy is what's killing me. I dissociate sometimes too, or I won't have any awareness of things normal. Memory is bizarre and not everything is going away with meds. I shattered. Oh well.
The United States Of Tera isn't exaggerated some people well in my case do have extreme cases like her... but not all cases are so extreme... It all depends on the trauma that determines the disassociation... Thanks for making this video..
You and I have talked before and God bless you. I live in fantasy to deal with my reality this way. The "3rd Eye" I hate PTSD to a max and depersonalization. Thank you for mentioning in your videos. :-)
I love Hello Kitty! How are you doing? I hope good! You seem like your normal! I have friends that have bi polar and schizoeffective! In and out of the hospital! Sad!
I like hearing the comparison between the two disorders by someone who's schizophrenic. I agree with what you say. I'm MPD. But, one funny thing that happens to me is that sometimes personalities come through me. When this happens, I become confused and influenced by the personality. I do things that I wouldn't normally do. And, later I have no idea why I acted like I did. Your description of being psychotic reminds me of this because when I'm influenced, I don't know what's going on.
I'm the daughter of 2 schizoaffectives, my mother has Schizo-affective with DID, and I personally have dissociation and dissociative amnesia (but not DID) so I know alot about this topic and there are huge differences between the two disorders. Schizos often do remember their episodes, but sometimes not, where as DID the person absolutely does not realize they have separate personalities, and they do have blocks of time that are missing. anyone feel free to message me (damn character count)
Why would someone rate this comment negatively? Did this person think that heathergate22 was being sarcastic? I guess that's a possibility. But, I'd much rather think that heathergate22 was being sincere. I do like ichbinkeinberliner's hair. Straight, blond hair is pretty.
I only mention this because you do not seem to want to truly get better, and it seems that you use Schizophrenia as a way to ensure that no real emotional growth occurs. Thus this make you accept you plight and is an escape. True, DSM-IV diagnosed Schizophrenics are NOT as cognizant as you are, and I am not aware of any that can consistently communicate the way you seem to be able to.
Again, you are an ass. You don't know me and don't try to pass judgement on me! Oh yeah, and HOW MANY schizophrenics have you met in your REAL life??? I really don't care what your psych books tell you. I suggest you read The Center Cannot Hold and look up Elyn Saks and then go tell her that she is not supposed to be able to hold a conversation. Frankly, I can't help it if you are an ignorant asshole.
You say you are schizophrenic - and once again - don't you know that everyone can SEE WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE, know where you live.... can get your IP address and show up at any moment at your door? Doesn't sound legitimate to me....

@ichbinkeinberliner People think psychology is a real science. God. It's just looking at behavioral patterns! A psychiatrist might work with a neurologist, where they can observe actual differences in the brain of a schizophrenic or autistic person as opposed to a 'normal' person.
My aunt's schizophrenic and acts with the maturity of a 14 year old. It's difficult, but it DOES worsen with age. I hate how ignorant people are.
Schizophrenics can be cognizant because there is treatment that helps (medication)
Dissociation is treated with therapy or not treated at all. Many people choose not to go to doctors or therapists. Does not mean they are ill, sick, or broken.
@mendelbear yea i don't buy this chick either. i just smell excuses, and she seems terribley infatile and histrionic. I honestly think bitch would benifit more from hitting the tred mill for fuck sakes. instead of discusing this.
DID and Schizophrenia have both been described as "personality disorders". No. don't always remember what happens between "personalities", as you put it. It really depends on the overall state of mind of the individual. (I dislike calling this "mental illness".
