yeah U.S. Forces definitely don't use this MG, we don't need to because a 240B is perfect besides the weight. Speaking of weight does anyone know a super reliable 7.62 machine gun that is light?
@magenius34 U.S. Special Forces have been adopting eastern designs in the sandbox to A.) Confuse the enemy who are familier with the chatter and B.) be able to work with domestic resources. The M240 is great, but it's very long and heavy. The PKM is far lighter and is one of the lightest LMGs in the world. If you want even lighter, you'd have to step down to an Automatic Rifle like the RPK which does not compare to the PKM for a gunnery role. The PKM is the LMG gold standard.
No doubts, the Russians had a win with this machine gun (Kalashnikov is like their John Browning). Just looking at how simple it is and how user friendly compared to others...nice
This wouldn't be too bad of a lefty firearm, sure the reloading process may seem a bit awkward to manipulate for a lefty, but the shells eject out of the left side and thats good enough for me.
@Nerflover10097 the ones that the russians use are made in russia, the ones that the polish use are made in Poland under license. This MG here, is Russian designed, Polish built.
Its much like the American M-16 vs Canadian C7 (the C7 is basically a Canadian made M-16)
Im pretty sure the conventional US military doesn't use the pkm. Maybe seals do when they need to leave no trace of them being there, but we use SAWs and 240 bravos as our support reasons.
It doesn't make sense that the US military would use a PKM, I know security contractors do but our military? Also who ever owns that PKM is really neglecting it :( look at all the rust on the gas block and front sight block.
im always wondering this and dont hate me because i dont know, but what is the jutting lever on the left sode of the gun just from the starting point of the barrel? i dont know what its used for
Can you assign it to my unit? Because I only saw ONE in afghanistan... and it was NOT in our arsenal. It was in THEIR hands. Not saying that's a terrorist gun, it is soviet. Love it, want it, but not used by us. Dunno, where you heard that bud. Nice gun though.
i think you meant to say special forces troops because there would be no need for a standard troop to hump around a 20 pound russian made gun unless they were behind enemy lines like special forces
FN M249 costs about $10,000.00 each. PKM, real ones, costs about $2,500.00 on the world market. So, I am a poor country any where in the world, and I am not being funded by the USA. Guess which GPMG I will be buying? I can 4 of the PKMs for 1 FN MAG58/M249.
@WR12MSH As long as it's registered before the NFA of 1986, and you have the proper paperwork, you can legally own a fully automatic weapon. Just don't be surprised if such firearms can cost as much as a small to decent sized car.
When firing the PKM in the prone, you should wear a glove on your Left hand (usually in bag with extra barrel) and hold the barrel locking lever on left side. This is done to keep the barrel from working lose and causing an out of battery fire situation. This also keeps you from getting bitten by the empties. I have fired them a lot in Afghanistan. Most of the time the the extra barrel and glove are missing.
Really enjoyed your video, can't wait until you do one on shooting the L-39 Lahti 20mm Anti-tank rifle. I have seen exactly one in my entire life at a gun show and it was a monster for something that was shot by a human being. I understand that it was directly responsible for the Russians winning WWII in that it shot up so much light armor, that the USSR had to create the T-34 in response.
@Everett07630 They had semi-auto PKM's in Centerfire's catalog for a while, sure they are out there, about $2,000-$3,000, but DANG!!! NICE WEAPON IN A NICE CHEAP/POWERFUL CALIBER!!
You had a little mistake during reloading of PKM. You had kept the shutter in rear position, but You need to return a slide freme (shutter) in forward position. If not, It increase the wear of some details. It is very common mistake as well as in AKM case, some shooters are following slide frame by hand in forward position (they need merely to drop it).
P.S. very intresting channel! Sorry for my badly english ))
I was trained to use the rk-95 rifle in the army which was essentially a clone of the ak-47 with better sights and a new stock, but I was somewhat sceptical of this machine gun since it was russian made withouth any changes, but when I got to test this baby I understood why our machine gunners preferred this gun over the Finnish made machinge guns with a higher rate of fire. This weapon is easy to use and to maintain and has a cartridge that both punches hard and is long reaching.
@GAMER8638 Holding onto the gas system would cause your hand to get burned. In the video you can see I am using the bipod leg to shoot it while standing.
@Sturmgewehre You hold it by either the handle on the barrel (what is not a really good way, but if all else fails, it works), or the folded bipod legs. A gunner in my unit fitted (with quite a lot of trouble though) a handguard on the square part of the gas tube, with holes for the mounting nobs. It wasn't bad, but we could not fit it on the vehicle mounts, so he had to take it off. I saw you wrote non-disintegrating belt, but in A-stan, we saw guys with disintegrating ones.
@Sturmgewehre Oh and also some tips about operation: After cocking the gun, push back the charging handle into front position, because the weapon doesn't really like it when the action slams the charging handle forward (if you take a closer look, it has a little hook to keep the charging handle forward, much like on the AR-15). Excellent video by the way.
@Sturmgewehre Oh and me again (sry for the triple post): You forgot to mention that the belt is in 25-rds lengths, kept together by the round between them. When the round is out of the belt, connection is severed and the empty length falls down. This is to keep the gunner to be tungled in the hanging empty belt (the lengths which have fallen down are to be picked up by the loader - since it's a crew served weapon primarily)
@Sturmgewehre I just watched the vid again, and I think it is not a polish-made, but a hungarian-made (there is an inscription that seems like "TŰZ" - meaning "fire" in hungarian).
I'm not entirely sure why... but every time I see the PKM I think of the SG43. I think it's the loading method (they're similar in that you have to press the round into the feed claw on both of 'em and charge the weapon after loading the belt, but beyond that they're almost nothing alike).
I deployed for a year to Afghanistan and my platoon lived in a tiny COP in the middle of nowhere with an Army SF team (7th Group). They had weapons I never even knew existed. They definitely don't use the PKM. Perhaps SEALs do but the Army definitely doesn't. The 240L (new, lighter 240) is in use as well as the MK 48. I don't know where that guy got his facts. I've definitelty been shot at with a PKM more times than I care to count though.
SEALS use the pkm and the saw, the m60 is outdated and 5 times as much money to make and like i said the SEALS use the pkm so its cheap and top of the line.
You didn’t say of the biggest advantage of PKM - the weight. Empty PKM weights 7,5 kg - exactly same as standard US Army M249, but PKM fires 7,62x54R when M249 fires weaker 5,56x45. For comparison the US Army M240B, the PKM counterpart weights 11,8 kg. Just a great weapon.
There is actually a modernized version of this weapon in use with Polish military right now. It has some fancy stuff added like picattiny rails for optic, polimers used instead of wood and its chambered for standard NATO 7,62. i'm not sure about the guts but aside some small changes it's gonna be the good old AK mechanism.
Three cheers for the proffessional touch, man! I have only just rescently found your youtube channel (via a bulgarian millitary forum) and I've enjoyed every video. Espessially the series on the ACR and the SCAR. This PKM MG video tops everything I've watched. Real pro. Keep up the good work!
@12SgtDeath Suppressors are not illegal...well its state by state. There federally controlled/regulated but alot of states allow them with proper paperwork and tax stamp. My state of WA allows ownership and recently approved legal use of them also :D YIPPPY
I saw a lot of these in Kosovo, and I've been hooked since. I got to hold one last year, but not fire it. They are very nice medium machine guns, and not something I would be interested in going head to head with!
I was shooting a pkm today and received a similar injury to my lower bicep. They are lovely weapons though and from what I've seen running it today much more rugged and less temperamental than most belt fed machine guns.
the production value of your videos has definitely gone up but don't get to fancy i feel it takes away from the notion that your just a regular guy who like to share info about guns
I appreciate the feedback. I'm trying to strike a balance between good quality video and keeping that "personal" feeling to the videos. This video was the first where I worked with a professional production team, it's our trial balloon for future projects. But there will be lots of videos to come that are still shot with the old Best Buy bought camcorder. :) Thanks for watching.
@Sturmgewehre I would say that slightly less "production/editing" than this video would be ideal. I would stay away from shots where you walk into frame or pan onto you with a product. its just so staged. but quality video in HD or at least a high resolution is always a good thing. But if you are trying to go mainstream and get your own show then i would ignore the above. Keep up the good work man
The Selector lever markings TuZ indicate that it is a Hunagarian PKM. TÜZ means fire in Hungarian. The serial number markings also lead me to believe that it is Hungarian as well. I am pretty sure that when I was at Vltor I was told they used Hungarian kits.
Thanks for the info. David wasn't sure what the country of origin was and there weren't any markings that clearly identified it. Your info is much appreciated.
@handgunlover Contractors have a wider array of weapons to choose from. Maybe some special forces use whatever they want, but regular infantry uses what they are issued.
I like your description of the PKM - "stupid simple." It really is compared to some other designs.
The GSG pistol looks promising. I checked them out at the NRA convention and will probably add one to my collection before year's end. Gotta get a Ruger SR1911 first!
I was surprised that there wasn't much muzzle rise when you were firing it from the hip. Is that because of the frontal weight of the weapon? The reason I ask is that when I see other videos of larger cartridge full auto weapons, for instance the M14, the recoil looks a lot less manageable. Keep on rockin'!
There are a number of factors in the controllability of any particular firearm. The PKM to many would be a handful because of the rate of fire and caliber. If I were 140lbs vs. 220lbs, things may have been a little different. I also know to lean into the recoil to counter it. If a person not familiar with firearms fired it, they would have been pushed backwards. So there's a lot that determines how controllable such a weapon is. The weight of the gun helps too.
I served with the M60E3 and hated the thing. The M240B is a great GPMG. However, the PKM is so stupid simple and is nothing more than a belt fed AK that I can't help but say I prefer the PKM over most everything else out there in the GPMG category.
That has to be the best PKM video I have seen yet! I love how easy it is to strip it down and fix something if you need to. DAMN OUR STUPID CANADIAN GUN LAWS!!!!!!
Wow. That's pretty wild that it ejected that casing with such force. Good thing im a lefty. Not that i'll ever find myself shooting one of these lol. Once again, excellent video!
never would have guessed US forces would be using the PKM, very interested in those 22 1911 and suppressor you showed too... very good prices. wish I could have a PKM like that but tanks to the retarded import bans and MG bans I will likely never know the joy (and wallet pain) of a full auto Especially a G3 or AK type rifle :'(
It will fit the Sig. You can pretty much fit it to any .22 with a threaded barrel as they sell (or will make) adapters for all sorts of firearms. You can easily swap the adapter out yourself with a wrench. It's a great design.
Thanks MAC! Bout time someone shows a vid of a machine gun and shows the workings of the gun, talks about it, and shows some close ups. GREAT vid I hope to see more like it soon :)
Yup. Now imagine turning an AK bolt upside-down and putting the ejection port on the left hand side. It kicks those huge steel cases out straight at the firer. Steel also holds heat longer than brass so when firing prone you find yourself laying in a bed of hot steel cases. That's something that seems to be a bit of a design oversight.
I was shooting with the machine gun : ) SUPER!

Gentlemen, I have one question. We finns used (and still use) same Mosin-Nagant weapons but for some reason we call the ammo 7,62X53R.
All others call that same cartridge 7,62X54R.
Where is the difference?

The biggest advantage the PKM offer is while it fires a big round, it's light. Lighter than the M249.
Well, the US is learning the lesson and makes the Mk48 (M249 but chambered for the 7.62 NATO) and the M240L (light M240).

The internals and guts of that PKM looked pretty damn clean. I wonder how many rounds that baby has sent down range. Love the video

Arent silencers illegal?
12SgtDeath 9 months ago
@12SgtDeath Suppressors are not illegal...well its state by state. There federally controlled/regulated but alot of states allow them with proper paperwork and tax stamp. My state of WA allows ownership and recently approved legal use of them also :D YIPPPY

I saw a lot of these in Kosovo, and I've been hooked since. I got to hold one last year, but not fire it. They are very nice medium machine guns, and not something I would be interested in going head to head with!

I actually really dig the increase in production quality, but do be careful to not get so glitzy you lose what drew people here. keep it up!

I was shooting a pkm today and received a similar injury to my lower bicep. They are lovely weapons though and from what I've seen running it today much more rugged and less temperamental than most belt fed machine guns.

the production value of your videos has definitely gone up but don't get to fancy i feel it takes away from the notion that your just a regular guy who like to share info about guns
trenttyre 9 months ago
@trenttyre
Sturmgewehre 9 months ago 10
@Sturmgewehre I would say that slightly less "production/editing" than this video would be ideal. I would stay away from shots where you walk into frame or pan onto you with a product. its just so staged. but quality video in HD or at least a high resolution is always a good thing. But if you are trying to go mainstream and get your own show then i would ignore the above. Keep up the good work man

@Sturmgewehre Keep improving. Nothing says "amateur" like a shaky camera.. I wrote it before, love the professional touch!

The Selector lever markings TuZ indicate that it is a Hunagarian PKM. TÜZ means fire in Hungarian. The serial number markings also lead me to believe that it is Hungarian as well. I am pretty sure that when I was at Vltor I was told they used Hungarian kits.
iraqgunz37 9 months ago 5
@iraqgunz37
Thanks for the info. David wasn't sure what the country of origin was and there weren't any markings that clearly identified it. Your info is much appreciated.
Sturmgewehre 9 months ago
@Sturmgewehre
he is correct, most of the VLTOR dealer sample pkms are hungarian kits with VLTOR produced recievers.

Very interesting comparison to the AK. It's like my AK-47 and 74 but on some major steroids.
rogermcgee1 9 months ago
@handgunlover Contractors have a wider array of weapons to choose from. Maybe some special forces use whatever they want, but regular infantry uses what they are issued.
ThePechanator2 9 months ago
You make that PKM look like a 9mm!

i got the chance to fire one my last trip to Iraq, it was mounted so i really didnt get much recoil. liked it, but like the 240b better. great video

The PKM, like the AK looks to be well suited for left hand shooters.

I like your description of the PKM - "stupid simple." It really is compared to some other designs.
The GSG pistol looks promising. I checked them out at the NRA convention and will probably add one to my collection before year's end. Gotta get a Ruger SR1911 first!

Honestly,kinda hard to believe the US forces use these PKMs, especially when I see them mostly using the M240
ThePechanator2 9 months ago
Greatly enjoyed this video.
I was surprised that there wasn't much muzzle rise when you were firing it from the hip. Is that because of the frontal weight of the weapon? The reason I ask is that when I see other videos of larger cartridge full auto weapons, for instance the M14, the recoil looks a lot less manageable. Keep on rockin'!
punkrockdrummer5 9 months ago
@punkrockdrummer5
Sturmgewehre 9 months ago
@Sturmgewehre What do you think it's better?The M240,PKM,or M60?
Humberto4790 9 months ago
@Humberto4790
I served with the M60E3 and hated the thing. The M240B is a great GPMG. However, the PKM is so stupid simple and is nothing more than a belt fed AK that I can't help but say I prefer the PKM over most everything else out there in the GPMG category.
Sturmgewehre 9 months ago
That has to be the best PKM video I have seen yet! I love how easy it is to strip it down and fix something if you need to. DAMN OUR STUPID CANADIAN GUN LAWS!!!!!!

the facts you tell in this video are great, I had absolutley no idea this gun would be used by US military
zazszdzfzgzhzjzkzlzx 9 months ago
never would have guessed US forces would be using the PKM, very interested in those 22 1911 and suppressor you showed too... very good prices. wish I could have a PKM like that but tanks to the retarded import bans and MG bans I will likely never know the joy (and wallet pain) of a full auto Especially a G3 or AK type rifle :'(
BigSean1992 9 months ago
Wow, I wish I had the cash to own something like that PKM. I wouldn't mind having something like that to take to the range occasionally.
Props to 21st Century Firearms.

It looks like more than alot of fun...Dam man...you got blood into that thing...It destine to be yours....an over-sized AK...but with more umf...
Cool .22...Wow...what a price on a "can"...would it fit the Sig Mosquito.....I want one...Ok...one of each...
Great Vid my friend....
ETHRON1...
ETHRON1 9 months ago
@ETHRON1
It will fit the Sig. You can pretty much fit it to any .22 with a threaded barrel as they sell (or will make) adapters for all sorts of firearms. You can easily swap the adapter out yourself with a wrench. It's a great design.
Sturmgewehre 9 months ago
@Sturmgewehre
thanks for the info Bro....my sig has a threaded barrel...and I like the idea of 200 vs 450 for a can for a .22.
I take it you still need the dam stamp for it....
but still it comes in under what some cans cost...
Thanks again for the info and great vid...

efrol1 9 months ago
That ejection thing seems to be common in Russian weapons, the AK's I've shot have really launched those suckers out.
FWalshingham 9 months ago
@FWalshingham
Sturmgewehre 9 months ago
@Sturmgewehre Maybe intentional. Soviets wanted to constantly advance, not enough time in one position to be a problem LOL
