The "replacements" : on their way- Space X's Dragon atop Falcon 9 LVs are imminent and SNC's Dream Chaser (read: HL-20) is too, Boeing's CST-100 & Orion (which is coming along very well). Return to the moon? If there's a valid reason- Bush's stated "to practice for Mars" is hooey. If we have real reasons, lets do it. I'm in favor of extensive resumed exploration of the ENTIRE surface, but that's not enuf for the Amer. public. Yes- minimize reliance on the Rooskies, for sure.
Hey "TheMadbater"- the NASA's safe- count on it. The new direction that the Obama administration has set isn't either the end of the world or a bad thing. Constellation was open-ended relying on future imaginary dollars. Now we have a plan.
As far as going the USAF space route? Good luck. Half the people I work with daily are AF engineers stuck counting beans. AF space is super-inefficient. Going private space, the new golden age, is the way to go.
@spaceflightengr While Constellation may have been 'open-ended', over budget, and missing deadlines, and while I do agree that private companies are far more efficient, it makes no sense to kill the Shuttle (or any) program while there is no replacement. I don't really like the idea of American astronauts having to hitch rides on Russian launch vehicles. But more importantly, this sets us way back on a return to the Moon, along with missions to Mars and the future of long-range exploration.
@spaceflightengr - Imaginary dollars? You do know that Obama has dedicated little if any money to his underpowered SLS rocket? Not that it has anywhere to go. The Orion capsule can't support 4 people for several months in interplanetary space. The SLS rocket is designed by Congress instead of engineers.
I need to make my major aerospace engineering and join the air force so that can really work on something that advances space technologies because it is only a mater of time that congress destroys nasa in the name of budget cuts.

Congratulations on another successful launch! Loved the way the Atlas 5 slowly passed the launch tower; reminds me of the Saturn 5 launches.
