There are too many scenes stretched too much to make the movie boring - that was typical to Sovjet era dull creations. In a real good movie there should not be a single wasted second. Overall this movie is just OK, there ARE some artful scenes that makes the movie memorable. You Russian folks like it because it's Russian, but this kind of movie NEVER makes it to the international stage. Simply it cannot compete with western or eastern classics. Do not be biased!
It's conforting to know that Stalin purged in turn a massive portion of the NKVD that made the purge possible. The disposal of Beria was an all-too-late cherry on top made sweeter by his cowardice at facing what he forced on others.
As the saying goes, "The Moor has done his duty, the Moor can go."
One of the greatest movies ever made! A real Classic! Bravo Nikita Mikhalkov! Speaking of the last scene, it should be studied in all cinematography colleges as an example of a PERFECTLY made scene.
