I cannot believe the ignorant shit being said on this thread...The Punch Brothers are NOT a bluegrass band. Actually, screw genre distinction because WHO THE FUCK CARES?!?! Did Chris Thile ASK you to critique his music? Are you a critic for the NY times?! Are YOU the world leader in your instrument?! If you don't like hearing this music then search something else on the internet and stop pissing and moaning. NO ONE wants to hear it, and no one cares.
@bluegrassingingman You're both insulting to gays and to Chris. He's a genius on the mandolin and never said he was playing bluegrass. He out grew bluegrass years ago. Personally I love bluegrass, but I like hearing any master musician play whatever he likes to play. Don't expect Chris to go back to bluegrass. It's not going to happen. Just appreciate the fine work he did as a kid when he played bluegrass. Like many great musicians, Chris needed to grow into other types of music.
i hear this song and i hear it like Jesus singing these words to me about his promises for my life. man every word just hits me soo hard:) (not trying to start any arguments:)
@Medium0Rare so how was it?? I saw them a few weeks ago and LOVED it!! Ohhh and just so you know your post caught my eye because Farkin has been my word of the week,loL!!

This is brilliant . . . don't know whether anyone else noticed but Chris's playing emulates the original Italian way of playing the mandolin. Also he's wearing a Venetian gondolier-type shirt. For alt.bluegrass, talk about world influences!
nice.. its always good to hear new creative stuff like this. These guys all understand where bluegrass came form and what it stands for and i believe they are doing a great job in taking it to new places..... "respect your roots but dont stay stuck in the rut"
@TheJamdolinPlayer No they don't understand what Bluegrass is and where it came from. There is not a lick of Bluegrass in these guys. Besides Chris Thile, Those college classical players wouldn't know Bluegrass if it hit them in the face. As far as Chris Thile he doesn't have a Bluegrass style. Most of the Punch Brothers stuff isn't even NewGrass. To me This is a in salt to Bluegrass. Like the POP Country today is to True Country music. I'm not saying they suck.
@bluegrasssingingman I'm just saying don't say your something when your not. . Bluegrass music is one of the most hardest music to play. It doesn't deserved to be cheated. Chris Thile is a great mandolin player. Hes' just not A Bluegrass picker.
@bluegrasssingingman To each is his own, and yep you are right they are not a bluegrass band. Im not a huge fan of theirs but you have to give credit where credit is due. Im not sure if you know this but the guitar player is Chris Eldridge, son of Ben Eldridge or The Seldom Scene im pretty sure he knows what bluegrass is, he also played with The Infamous Stringdusters for a while. The funny thing is these guys could do a traditional bluegrass set and knock the doors down!...
@bluegrasssingingman Actually, they do understand what bluegrass is and where it came from, if you haven't seen them do Bill Monroe songs or even some of their own, don't say stuff like that. Why does everything have to be about genres? What these boys are doing is purely MUSIC, not defined by what people expect when they see the bluegrass instrumentation. They are all some of THE most talented musicians on each of their instruments in today's world, why don't you just appreciate it as MUSIC.
@lindsey13184 They are pure Gay. Bill Monroe would be ashamed of what their trying to do with Bluegrass. All Chris Thile does is insult Bluegrass pickers every chance he gets. Like on Tempest Real he claims bluegrass pickers are going to F, and their not. It goes to Em, so how amazing is Chris, how Talented is he now? I think he claimed it went to Am. The song goes to Em.
@TheJamdolinPlayer Bluegrass music is not a rut. It came from a great culture. It's another thing to get fuss traded. Yeah taking to a place where country music went. Down the crapper. Bluegrass is perfect music. It doesn't need to be adjusted so people can learn to play it. If you want to play Bluegrass play it true. If you want to play rock, country, classical, jazz,or blues. Stay true to there roots. Look at POP its today called country. Which is now bad as DISCO. Next rap in Bluegrass ?
@bluegrasssingingman I think you twisted my comment. My comment was to state that just because you started off playing bluegrass and you have a "bluegrass instrumentation" doesnt mean you have to stay bluegrass. But these guys all have it in their influeneces and from what I have read don't want to be called a "bluegrass."

I remember thile with nickle creek, same old, same old. I see the talent he has, but for some reason I can't bring myself to like this type of music. I think it's the mandolin, it sounds so tinny. I'm also unsure of his voice.
I saw them live. Chris Thile, amazing musician, amazing singer. These guys are so fuckin' cool. True talent. A rare find. A+.
