  • Well done Ian. enjoyed your stints on Richard Searling's former 'Soulsauce; show, which was mysteriously axed. You always surprised me with so many gems.

  • golden soul classic, thanks for sharing

  • chills up the spine. amazing how the body reacts to such soulful splendor

  • I think this and Lend a Hand were the first records that really touched and I had to buy them. Will love the, both forever. Coral

  • hass cleveland horne passed away now ?

  • He passed away in 1999, one year after doing this.

  • ok thanks Ian...sad loss ...and thank you for breaking the record in the first place.

  • Ian this has to be your finest

  • Awesome

  • Unreal.

  • I was at the mecca circa 74/76, we travelled a long distance for those nites and didn't care a jot, my life took a change for the better thanks to Curtis and Levine and the same friendly faces and solid tracks. They've remained one of the best times of my life. Thanks Ian for posting your many videos, we are all very thankful.

  • The Mecca nearly gone but sounds like this will live forever.Thank you.

  • i was there when the Carstairs performed at Blackpool Mecca alldayer, unfortunately i had a serious car crash on the way home in a friends car and ended up in Lancaster Infirmary for a week with a fractured Skull!!! i had loss of memory of what happened the majority of that day apart from this classic group performing! the were awsome. xx

  • THE record that defined the split between the mecca and the casino.used to go to both,ie casino after the mecca.this and the anderson bros etc kept me at the mecca.loved the casino, but it'll always be mecca for me. cheers, curtis and levine.

  • good to talk to you again. this was another of my favourites from the mecca and cleethorpes. brings tears to my eyes and also never gonna let you go by jobel and the salsoul orchestra

  • Mecca Highland room circa 77 I was there as a spotty 19 yr old. I was blown cleanly away..........

  • ticks all the boxes still 30 odd years on.... keep the faith.

  • i actually have this single made for the blackpool mecca with the picture of the mecca on the center i also had the privelege to go inside the building today as a friend works for the building company who have been contracted to knock it down took me round ,it was brilliant but yet so sad to see all the rooms still recognisable but in such decay so sad so much history will be lost

  • did you manage to take any pictures? would love to see them!

  • one word. awesome!

  • Ohhhh wot a tune makes me cry every time

  • this one is a magical moment in time,my number

one and the night to remember;i wish you all

    the success you deserve

  • Fab

  • Had this in my head all day for some reason, then i came here by accident. Just brilliant! 5 starred and faved! Very touching account of this performance in the "more info" box, thank you Ian!

  • this is awesome

  • This is in my ever increasing top ten absolutely pure soul, makes me go all Balloo the bear.

  • This is the one for me ....rare soul, northern soul call it what you like, but if I had to play one record to explain how special it all was (and still is) this would be the record ...brilliant rare soul music :)) thanks Ian..ktf

  • you couldnt have put it better. this record is so special to me. words cannot explain how special. love to you all out there who love this,,deb

  • ditto mate. this is the tune to top all northern soul tunes. your comments echo my thoughts, thanx debbie

  • Magnificent mate ....it still stops me in my tracks every time I hear it and even more so now .

  • like earler post "came across your "maiden" name and i shook" iv always sang along as "name in there" WOW it just gets better , great lyrics, great song and awesome vid. nice one xxxx

  • great tune there! remember it well!, please check out my channel and some of the great old mecca tunes that i have in my videos! :0)

  • Although living in the area I was never quite old enough to go to the Casino/Mecca in their heyday, but I was really into the music, this beautiful track being one of my favs. Great to hear it again after all these years and a lovely story from Ian as well. Wonder who I sold my import "Red Coach" copy to ??

  • Blackpool Mecca is going the way of the rest so all we have are these bits of what was. Enjoy these glimpses of the past

  • Whenever I am in Blackpooi have to go there and just stand outside. 73 to 76 were great years and the reunion 28 11 98 was just something else. When is it being demolished?

  • Yep, have to hand it to Ian, you may have strayed over the years (I remember approaching you at Heaven, about 20 years ago) but here is probably the tune that epitomises danceable rare SOUL and thanks to you we can see the guys behind the classic. By the way Leee J is an old acquaintance of mine, a small world indeed.

    Paul W

  • WOW WOW WOW IAN, THANK YOU ONE MILLION ... I CAME ACROSS THE TOTALLY MIND BLOWING TRACK THIS MORNING SO JOINED THIS SITE AS A RESULT! I'VE NOT LISTENED TO YOU D. J'ing FOR 30 DAMN YEARS AND GOT TO TELL YOU, THAT YOU ARE STILL IN A CLASS OF YOUR OWN! Listening to this, for first time being able to watch the artists blew me awaY,(as with all most important times in life words are inadequate) but those guys faces say it all! It's wicked what you did for them. Great 2 know u'r still out on floor! X

  • From the sounds of it, you should subscribe to my videos (click on my name and it will take you to my page) and see all the other Northern Soul classics we filmed over the years. You should also get the "Yesterday And Tomorrowe" album from Amazon - there's a DVD with the CD to watch each song as well as listen to it.

  • Thought you may interested to know the Mecca at Blackpool is being demolished? I always hoped we would have one more day/time? but, such is life, we all have memories?

  • Yeah - I always thought we'd get one more chance to walk down that corridoor again, but it looks like November 28th 1998 was the last time ever. Poignant how two of the Carstairs were dead a year later, after this performance. Almost as if fate kept them with us for the twenty five years between this record epitomising the Mecca and us actually getting to see them in 1998.

  • well there one of lifes little mysteries cleared up the lyric is ,i came across your maiden name, and not ,i came across your many men and i shook, like ive been singing since the mecca days.cheeors ian

  • makes me tingle all over......love this tune!

  • thanks for the wonderful memories of this tune. one of my favourites at cleethorpes

  • down in the depths of gloucestershire i had forgotten this classic, havent heard it for 20 yrs. thanks Ian

  • I blame Mary Fox on Radio Stoke for this, hearing it last year it gets better every listen

  • I aint never seen a car with stairs in it, a bus - maybe

  • one of the greats from cleethorpes in the 80s . along with house for sale, spring rain etc. best days of my life

  • Brilliant. No matter what they say about you Ian levine you're a soul hero! Turning dreams into reality! Keep on doing what you're doing!

  • What a night it must have been!!

  • i never get tired of this tune.quality! cant wait for 100 club sat and blackpool in november.

Thank you & keep the faith,

    John.

  • yes i was there every week at the highland room and for the revival in 98 when cleveland sung this .-r.i.p. cleveland-still the best record from the mecca, and well done to ian and colin for breaking this all time classic at the mecca.

you had to be there really, it was inside your head the vibe, the music the people, were so cool-wigan was great but so different from this.i still support and play this era as much as i can.

    dj/soul fan pete haigh

  • Yes Pete Haigh, I can attest that you were indeed there every week. A mainstream fixture of the entire era of the Highland Room.

  • Ian ,

Talking about James Fountain and Marvin Holmes- do you know what happened to them ? Are they still alive ? Presume you would have tried to track them down for your documentaries and recordings etc ? James Fountain wasnt that old was he in 1972 when he recorded Seven Day Lover ; remember or am sure he had one or two sides out on Peach Tree in the very late 60s/early 70s prior to Seven Day Lover .

  • I filmed James Fountain doing "Seven Day Lover" on "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". He died a couple of years after that.

  • This page seems to be visited by real soul people unlike the other sad Northern Soul pages -which lay out mini shrines to all that fantastic white pop played at Wigan Casino !! The likes of the Carstairs , Marvin Holmes , James Fountain just seem to go right over their heads .

  • just brilliant,

  • magic

  • hya ian we used to come up to the mecca every week , 2 coaches from stoke.ive got some "archive" 2 stuff of you + colin on cassette @sum place in warrington circa 74 when the carstairs was massive. keep the faith....

  • May all time favourite song, hence my login name! I was there at the highland room when this was filmed, singing along and clapping in the front row, and i shed a little tear too. Thanks Ian for all your efforts and love in bringing real music to my ears over the years. Mac.

  • Yes I agree My all time fave too - so that's two of us lol - keep the faith

  • THats 3 of us then :-) First heard it around 77 then had played at me 18th and then every birthday since KTF

  • This is amaizing just see the old Highland room again!!! I spent many a happy hour DJing there in the late sixties, re-live those days on xltrax web radio every Sunday 9am till 11am EDT request songs on Yahoo at xltraxradio

  • Ian Lavine - You are a trojan ! What would northern soul have done without you ! Thank you for everything you have done for the faith. Its currently going through a revival and its fan-bloody-tastic to see and hear all this priceless footage replayed. You are the bollock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks a lot ! I will Try.

  • Hi from Japan, this is so nice a song that I would like to have it on the CD !

  • try time music the cream of northern soul reference no TM1387

  • THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!

  • Thanks Ian in my view one of the very best has it all...sounds just as good today awesome

  • Yes that was a night to remember. Does Ian have unissued video of say the corridor leading to the Highland Room? The walk down that corridor and through the doors was part of going to the Mecca.

About time someone put together a last hour CD.

  • thanks for this video....it's really priceless...
