Exactly. A hit from behind is a hit from behind in the rule book, and intent means nothing if there's a high degree of violence. It would have been charging had he not turned around anyways.

I'm tired of this legal vs. illegal crap. At this point, it's a matter of life/death. Let's face it, it's a game, and hitting someone with the intent that Liambas did is an outrage. The rules need to change, they're outdated to a when players where not as fast, and not as strong. What will it take for this to change it really is disjusting to watch. Can you rationalize someone taking a run at someone at that speed, and smashing them against a solid wall? It needs to stop, the game won't suffer
This hit was legal. Maybe not necessary but legal for sure. Its part of the game for there to be injuries. It sucks at how bad fanelli got it but Liambis should not have his career end due to this legal but brutal hit.
yeah people aren't really showing much insight here. Its the regular jump on the bandwagon when someone gets hurt crowd. All the people pissing and moaning here would be saying what a great hit is was had he not been hurt. I just think a 20 year old over ager could show a little more restraint with a 16 year old kid. The suspension is far too long. Unfortunately that is the way of the hockey community. Suspend based on severity of injury just to assuage the left and the media.
does anyone realize that just cuz you dont see a hit coming that doesnt make it illegal...i never once tapped a guy on the shoulder and said "hi, excuse me, i'm going to hit you now..get ready!"...people are dumb and should only be allowed to speak when spoken to
i dont give a fuck if its legal or not; that brute knew he was gonna fuck that kid up and he took advantage of it. he just SMASHED him, i heard fanelli's all fucked up now... anybody got more legit info??
the hit was legal. dont give me that bull shit that its illegal because situations like Fanelli was in happen atleast twice each game. Its just unfortunate that everything that could go wrong went wrong on the hit. I feel sorry for both Liambis and Fanelli. I dont know if Fanelli will ever lace up his skates and Liambis's career is over and hes facing a lot of adversity because of this
No one is seeing the real problem here. Liambas shouldn't be suspended. He is the product of a system that perpetuates violence on the ice. "big hits are part of the game" says smileyroeps. You shouldn't be able to do something on the ice that you can't do on the street. The Verdict: The OHL and the hockey community are guilty of allowing the game to continue in this unsportsmanlike and barbaric manner. Liambas is the scapegoat for a system that doesn't want to change.
Checking and hitting isn't violence, you don't seem to see the point here at all. This is nothing more than a freak accident. Thousands of people die every day from accidents at work and on the streets.
your a fuckin tool. sure its terrable about the outcome. big hits are a part of the game. and who ever disagrees is a plug. 1 big hit can change the momentum of the game instintaniously. his job is to hit. he went for a big hit and as FANELLI passed he turned after the point of no return. so boarding at the max. and Fanelli should of been wearing his helemat properly. like as soon as he got hit it came off before he hit the boards. if it was on tight and proper none of this would of happened
You are the blind one here, this isn't a headshot, this is shoulder to shoulder. David Branch the OHL commissioner who gave Liambas a one year suspension (for 'going into the check with speed') himself said this wasn't a hit to the head, and believe me, they've seen and studied this hit from all angles. If you would look a little closer you would see that the helmet comes off after impact with the boards!
So basically your saying that It could have very easily been boarding right? Because Thats what it looks like you said and i think most of us no That IF you turn your back at the very last second, 99.5 percent of the time its not called. So obviously it was worse than that because hes suspended for the year. So if your saying it was clean, why are you saying its boarding?
First of all you need to learn how to talk and spell. Secondly the helmet came off after impact with the boards and thirdly his head is not the issue here, it's his neck that makes his injury so severe.
your an idiot bud...yea big hits are apart of the game, if you watch the vid closely Fanelli is actually hit from the side and Liambas rotates Fanelli's body into the boards so he goes face first. It is def more than just a boarding penalty. Im a ref and you dont have a clue what your talking about.
The problem is that these guys are being taught to drill the other guy through the boards. It's alright to hit a guy and not put him in the hospital but that's not what the GM's and agents want from these guys. It isn't good enough to just take a guy out of a play, you have to see if you can put him 15 rows up into the seats.
To all the idiots that are on here condoning this kind of thing, give your head a shake. You have no values and even less intelligence. This is hockey, not war you morons
Lmao! amen, well said. I was a big hitter at a pretty high level, and i totally agree with you! Its not how many body checks, its now "hey did you see what i did to that kid" we are seeing the same whit in the show.
At least you understand the mentality problem with these guys. Some of these idiots can't grasp the concept. These are the same idiots that can't understand why these guys even get suspended. Some people should remain silent because when they open their mouths it shows a lack of intelligence.
@fastsass your a fucking idiot, obviously they dont teach them to drill guys, yeah every team has a couple big guys they send out to do some dirity work when another player gets stupid and does dumb shit but your so stupid to think that this shits not the players fault, GMs and coaches have nothing to do with it most causes dumb fuck
As a Windsor Spitfire fan....our captain passed away (Mickey Renaud) and the Spitfires rallied behind that to win the Memorial Cup.....Kitchner is ranked top 5 in the CHL and I can see very possibly the Rangers regrouping after this and go on a tear.....
.....For whatever that is worth.....
- Still need to end this with GO SPITS!!......sorry.....
Sonbac your a fucking fagget kid, i really wish you were at the end of that hit and to be honest you probably would have took that hit alot worse then fanelli did because your alittle bitch, get a life you panzy
I hope to God that Fanelli is okay after this. I am a former referee with over 1000 games refereed, and many years playing. But, I would call this a clean hit. Lambeau didn't leave his feet (charging), didn't take more than 3 strides(charging)..he was coasting, the elbow wasn't up (elbowing or head shot), the hands weren't up (roughing or head shot)...just a bad outcome of a clean hit. I really wish I could assess a penalty on this one, but I can't. Best wishes to Ben Fanelli and his family.
Are you fuckin serious man? YOur fuckin sick in the head, The guy is in critical condition and thats your reaction? HUH? you fucking piece of shit. I would do anything to get my fuckin hands on you, you mother fucker. Go fuck yourself you fuckin faggot. YOUr so fuckin lucky i don't know who you are. mother fucker!
Its going to take a death before hockey reforms itself into a civilized sport. Until then it will be an activity that captivates cut throats, barbarians, and the grosser part of the proletariat.
The language in some of these comments is disgusting, regardless of what you may think of the player involved. While it's unfortunate that someone was badly hurt, and I truly hope he fully recovers and is able to resume his career, I can't say from the clips that I've seen here that the hit was a dirty one. Frankly, if Fanelli wasn't hurt, there wouldn't have even been a penalty, never mind a suspension.
my question to everyone? were not allowed to hurt people on the street without getting charged with assault...what makes sports any different? being an ex fighter myself and having to live with the fact that i have hurt people in the past all in the name of fun just makes me realize how barbaric we as a society really are....especially now that i have my own children i am ashamed of my actions
this is the result of the rules of the game today. what do you want from a game where Bobby Clarke is a Canadian hero for breaking the leg of a Soviet player in the 70's. what do you expect kids to do., react when they are taught that it's ok to break the leg of a Russian, it's ok to intimidate, rather than out-skill...
wow big man Liambis is, hes 20, at the end of his pointless hockey career, so what does he do? ruin the career of a 16 year old who actually had some potential, i hope he feels proud of himself, fuckin goon
listen, first of all he wasn't unconcious. they said he had conciousness right after the hit. second of all it was a clean clean hit. said the ohl commisioner. third of all the only reason why he's been suspended that long is because of the speed he had before he hit him. it was clean but the commisioner said "it was because of the speed and distance travelled". also he wants the hitter to suffer as much loss of playing as ben.
so, its possible not to breathe on ur own, and still be concious, cause if u couldn't breathe on ur own and unconcious u'd be dead. but if its vise versa, then ur in a coma. get it?
wow - I hope this kid gets to play again. What's interesting is that this ape has a history of running guys from behind. Perfect example of guys living in a state of arrested development encouraged along the way until he suddenly has no hockey to play...what is this asshole going to do now? Hopefully coach young impressionable kids right? haha. Oh hockey, except for this shit - I love it!!!
Regardless of the speed and Fanelli's position - players always, always, always can ease up a little or change body position slightly so they don't follow through with attempted murder - pretty much what this knuckledragger was up to. He's always been a chump and he's going out like one...Hopefully he never plays again.
he turned at the last second. u honestly think he woulda been able to slow down that quickly? so due to that split second when fanelli turned around u think that liambas should never play again? ur rediculous. btw i dont watch ohl im from western canada so i watch whl so its not like im favoriting a player or anything just so u know.
Yeah, dude, I was expecting a grotesque hit. Instead, I saw an unfortunate one. The hockey powers-that-be are getting out of control with the legislation. Don't keep your head down when crossing the line(s) and don't expect to be treated with kid gloves when you spin around to avoid a hit.
and what country are you from faggot? You need to insult other countries because you feel inferior? Leave it to a foreigner to start shit caus hes got a tiny dick
Hope he's alright, saw the video of the hit, looked like he turned his back to him at the last possible second, guy had him lined up before he turned , would have been a good hit had he braced himself for a shoulder on shoulder hit.
What he means is that this is all influenced by the NHL. It's not quite the same is in, say, soccer, where all the leagues are run under one governing body (FIFA), so I understand what you mean. But the NHL is the goal for these kids, and there is a huge lack of disrespect in the NHL right now, as far as headhunting is concerned. So I definitely think that the NHL influenced this, even if they aren't run under one group.
Second is the equipment that is like body armour. It should be softer so that if you do want to take a run at a guy you get hurt as well. It may sound stupid but so is letting these young men try and kill each other. The hard plastic waiting under the sweater is like hitting them with a stick, it has the same effect.
so your saying that you want softer pads so it doesn't hurt when you hit someone else? That is just going to make people hit harder and more often, and stuff like this will happen more often.... idiot.
There is an idiot in this conversation and I'm not it. What I meant was if there wasn't the body armour and there was a good chance it would hurt the player throwing the hit if they tried to run the guy through the boards, they wouldn't do it. It's that simple, speaking of simple......
Modern epuipment is more for the safety of blocking shots etc. I don't mind the equipment, but with it comes a need for respect. You shouldn't have the mentality to put a plastic shoulder pad into someone's face. You shouldn't have the mentality to throw a foot-long elbow pad into the back of a 16-year old kid's head when he's that close to the boards. Unfortunately, there's hardly any respect whatsoever in North American hockey these days, and this is the result.
Well, you have kids being scouted for thier toughness, so they are going to lay some viscious hits. Some kids are in Junior hockey because they can skate and hit. That's what thier going to do to make it. They can't afford to be sweethearts on the ice in front of scouts.
Yeah, don't quite think that Liambis is getting scouted as an overaged goon. People are staying away from the morons like Avery and Hollweg in recent years, why would they want a Liambis on their team?
jesus christ your still replying on this? why didn't you give up life a long time ago so your parents don't need to buy you things like food, clothes, etc... dumb faggot.
There is no respect however if the leagues had any balls at all they would deal with this. No respect = suspensions, it's not rocket science. Most of you wouldn't remember players with no helmets, I do, they never did that when they were not wearing helmets, there was a chance they could hurt themselves, problem solved. No helmets is not the answer but policing the players is. Which means even if it's tied in the third call the damn penalty!
You have hit the nail on the head. It is exactly that, a total lack of respect. It would serve the rest of the people commenting on here to remember we are talking about a 16 year old "KID" here. This could have permanent effects on this young man for the rest of his life. I could care less what teams he or any other KID plays for, this kind of thing is just wrong.
First these guys are seriously trying to drive each other through the boards. That mentality has to be changed. I coached and I can tell you if one of my players was running around trying to hurt guys he would be benched in a heart beat. There something sick in some peoples minds that allows them to think that this is ok. IT'S NOT OK!!! Use your bloody head. What happens if this young man dies? has anyone really thought about that?
change the mentality? so the ones left still hitting hard are at an advanage.. nobody is going to give that up. hockey is a physical sport people get hurt, just like in any contact sport. look how much padding football players wear and there have been extremely serious injury in that sport. should they go easy on eachother? ask nicely "hey could you let me tackle you now please?"
people love the sport because its a brutal struggle to win the game..
hockey is officially a joke, can barely watch the nhl, bettman and the owners are tools. too much protection being worn so players can now try and kill each other...
No elbow and not a cheap shot. Problem is Fanelli turned his back a mili-seconds before Liambus through the check. Its virtually impossible for Liambus to stop himself. By that time Liambus commited himself to that bodycheck. It was a stupid decision by Fanelli to turn his back in the last second and got unfortunately punished severly for his bad decision. But its a good lesson for all young players to not turn your back when a hit is coming.
Liambas is a tool thats why he hit him from behind if he ever tried that on my i would tune his ass, i would drop the mits with him any day... oh wait hes suspended looks like that wont happen
such non sense, whats the link with Africa... Absolutely dumb comment...Its like saying hey loser your father got aids? No prob man, millions have it!
As terrible of a hit as this is, hopefully it will open some eyes when it comes to headhunting. Hits to the head should be bannished at every level of hockey. A 16 year old kid almost died here because of a headhunt. If that doesn't open your eyes, I don't know what the hell is wrong with you.
clean hit? he fractured this guy's skull! not many "clean hits" can fracture a human skull, Liambas could've skated right by him. and Fanelli's head wasn't even down! he saw Liambas coming and tried to absorb the hit but Liambas is much heavier so he smashed Fanelli right into the boards, dirty fuckin hit
saw this guy play in brampton today and hes going to be a star

The suspension is far too long. Unfortunately that is the way of the hockey community. Suspend based on severity of injury just to assuage the left and the media.

the hit was legal. dont give me that bull shit that its illegal because situations like Fanelli was in happen atleast twice each game.

Liambas is the scapegoat for a system that doesn't want to change.
trustthetide 2 years ago

KoivuTheHab 2 years ago
So basically your saying that It could have very easily been boarding right? Because Thats what it looks like you said and i think most of us no That IF you turn your back at the very last second, 99.5 percent of the time its not called. So obviously it was worse than that because hes suspended for the year. So if your saying it was clean, why are you saying its boarding?
111voodoo 2 years ago
First of all you need to learn how to talk and spell. Secondly the helmet came off after impact with the boards and thirdly his head is not the issue here, it's his neck that makes his injury so severe.
KoivuTheHab 2 years ago
your an idiot bud...yea big hits are apart of the game, if you watch the vid closely Fanelli is actually hit from the side and Liambas rotates Fanelli's body into the boards so he goes face first. It is def more than just a boarding penalty. Im a ref and you dont have a clue what your talking about.
Stumps35 2 years ago
Glad he was suspended for the year! This hit is just too dirty. There's no need to skate that far to hit a guy that hard.

The language in some of these comments is disgusting, regardless of what you may think of the player involved. While it's unfortunate that someone was badly hurt, and I truly hope he fully recovers and is able to resume his career, I can't say from the clips that I've seen here that the hit was a dirty one. Frankly, if Fanelli wasn't hurt, there wouldn't have even been a penalty, never mind a suspension.

this is the result of the rules of the game today. what do you want from a game where Bobby Clarke is a Canadian hero for breaking the leg of a Soviet player in the 70's. what do you expect kids to do., react when they are taught that it's ok to break the leg of a Russian, it's ok to intimidate, rather than out-skill...

chrispwns123456789 2 years ago
listen, first of all he wasn't unconcious. they said he had conciousness right after the hit. second of all it was a clean clean hit. said the ohl commisioner. third of all the only reason why he's been suspended that long is because of the speed he had before he hit him. it was clean but the commisioner said "it was because of the speed and distance travelled". also he wants the hitter to suffer as much loss of playing as ben.
alihadi11 2 years ago
what are you talking about he couldn't breathe on his own at the hospital
pezdispenser365 2 years ago
so, its possible not to breathe on ur own, and still be concious, cause if u couldn't breathe on ur own and unconcious u'd be dead. but if its vise versa, then ur in a coma. get it?
alihadi11 2 years ago
wow - I hope this kid gets to play again.

He's always been a chump and he's going out like one...Hopefully he never plays again.
timmyboy1970 2 years ago
he turned at the last second. u honestly think he woulda been able to slow down that quickly? so due to that split second when fanelli turned around u think that liambas should never play again? ur rediculous. btw i dont watch ohl im from western canada so i watch whl so its not like im favoriting a player or anything just so u know.

I do blame the NHL for most of these problems. They try to do what they see and the NHL is only about money, not the game.
fastsass 2 years ago
...um, this isn't NHL
sammymortada 2 years ago
What he means is that this is all influenced by the NHL. It's not quite the same is in, say, soccer, where all the leagues are run under one governing body (FIFA), so I understand what you mean. But the NHL is the goal for these kids, and there is a huge lack of disrespect in the NHL right now, as far as headhunting is concerned. So I definitely think that the NHL influenced this, even if they aren't run under one group.
LeafsFanInOttawa 2 years ago
Second is the equipment that is like body armour. It should be softer so that if you do want to take a run at a guy you get hurt as well. It may sound stupid but so is letting these young men try and kill each other. The hard plastic waiting under the sweater is like hitting them with a stick, it has the same effect.
fastsass 2 years ago
so your saying that you want softer pads so it doesn't hurt when you hit someone else? That is just going to make people hit harder and more often, and stuff like this will happen more often.... idiot.
stuartmac8 2 years ago
There is an idiot in this conversation and I'm not it. What I meant was if there wasn't the body armour and there was a good chance it would hurt the player throwing the hit if they tried to run the guy through the boards, they wouldn't do it. It's that simple, speaking of simple......
fastsass 2 years ago
Modern epuipment is more for the safety of blocking shots etc. I don't mind the equipment, but with it comes a need for respect. You shouldn't have the mentality to put a plastic shoulder pad into someone's face. You shouldn't have the mentality to throw a foot-long elbow pad into the back of a 16-year old kid's head when he's that close to the boards. Unfortunately, there's hardly any respect whatsoever in North American hockey these days, and this is the result.
LeafsFanInOttawa 2 years ago
Well, you have kids being scouted for thier toughness, so they are going to lay some viscious hits. Some kids are in Junior hockey because they can skate and hit. That's what thier going to do to make it. They can't afford to be sweethearts on the ice in front of scouts.
nick4285 2 years ago
Yeah, don't quite think that Liambis is getting scouted as an overaged goon. People are staying away from the morons like Avery and Hollweg in recent years, why would they want a Liambis on their team?
LeafsFanInOttawa 2 years ago

fuzzydoor 2 years ago
Shut yer goddamned mouth you stupid caveman prick.
LeafsFanInOttawa 2 years ago
There is no respect however if the leagues had any balls at all they would deal with this. No respect = suspensions, it's not rocket science. Most of you wouldn't remember players with no helmets, I do, they never did that when they were not wearing helmets, there was a chance they could hurt themselves, problem solved. No helmets is not the answer but policing the players is. Which means even if it's tied in the third call the damn penalty!
fastsass 2 years ago
Well at least they dealt with this properly. Liambas was suspended for the rest of his eligibility today, which is good news.
LeafsFanInOttawa 2 years ago
You have hit the nail on the head. It is exactly that, a total lack of respect. It would serve the rest of the people commenting on here to remember we are talking about a 16 year old "KID" here. This could have permanent effects on this young man for the rest of his life. I could care less what teams he or any other KID plays for, this kind of thing is just wrong.
fastsass 2 years ago
First these guys are seriously trying to drive each other through the boards. That mentality has to be changed. I coached and I can tell you if one of my players was running around trying to hurt guys he would be benched in a heart beat. There something sick in some peoples minds that allows them to think that this is ok. IT'S NOT OK!!! Use your bloody head. What happens if this young man dies? has anyone really thought about that?
fastsass 2 years ago 2
change the mentality? so the ones left still hitting hard are at an advanage.. nobody is going to give that up. hockey is a physical sport people get hurt, just like in any contact sport. look how much padding football players wear and there have been extremely serious injury in that sport. should they go easy on eachother? ask nicely "hey could you let me tackle you now please?"
people love the sport because its a brutal struggle to win the game..

orchcomposer 2 years ago
No elbow and not a cheap shot. Problem is Fanelli turned his back a mili-seconds before Liambus through the check. Its virtually impossible for Liambus to stop himself. By that time Liambus commited himself to that bodycheck. It was a stupid decision by Fanelli to turn his back in the last second and got unfortunately punished severly for his bad decision. But its a good lesson for all young players to not turn your back when a hit is coming.
