I felt regret and sadness upon hearing your words around the 6 minute mark, where you began to express naive disillusionment, and to question the conflict between an advocate's duty to his client versus the advocate's own moral compass. I do not mean to sound dismal, but I fear your future practice will confirm your impressions. You may be able to minimize these conflicts if you have the luxury to choose your practice and your clients carefully; good luck.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It makes sense that you're feeling more introverted, you have a lot to take in and reflect on. And don't worry about getting worn out in social interactions, we all do. You just pick it up later when you have something more to say.
Definitely a God thing that your roommate is a phl major.
I'm becoming much more of an introvert too nowadays. Weird. By the way... thanks for tagging me on the *15 facts* thingy.... I haven't forgotten about it. Do you think it's too late though? Like, the season is gone?
I suppose this works to a degree but doesn't necessarily address the areas of your concern where... A) the law may be unjust
or
B) the law is unclear where it should be clear to be just
and so...
C) some application / interpretation of the law could/will lead to unjust ends.
I guess this is where application of the law is not enough... but also the further molding of the law through legislation towards more just ends is needed.
As a legal scholar you could impact both fronts? :)
i guess i agree with your first argument - i could take the mindset that i am doing the right thing by serving my clients needs, and as i think about it, i don't think i'd be forced to do an explicitly wrong thing - i can't really be held responsible if my arguments leads the court to make a wrong decision that negatively impacts people down the line, right?.
Really cool video, may the force be with you too! I hope you will keep us updated on your journey through law school. I too am highly introverted and get tired when socialising with people, but it's nothing personal, I really do like knowing who people are and how they tick.
thanks man! i will keep you guys updated. and yeah, i think people have misconceptions about introverts and whether they like people or not - i find that i get easily attached to people.
Law school--especially the first year--can function to dampen (or even seem to steal) one's passion and idealism about the law. But if one pushes through, one gains a realistic understanding of law and how it works--including that it's often not about justice. This realistic understanding can fire up one's passion and idealism and turn one into a more effective agent for justice than one would have been if one merely had passion and idealism but no realistic understanding. By the middle...
(con't) ...of my first year in law school, I felt all but defeated, thinking, "This isn't what I signed up for." By the end of my second year, the passion and idealism I arrived with had been refined and refired. As a result, the work I did the summer between my second and third years was the best work I'd done up to that point in my life. So, keep going. It really does get better.
As for dorming, it has its moments, but one year was enough. The bathroom situation was out of control.
thank you for sharing, prof! i'm glad you don't think i'm a dweeb for venting about it. what did you do in the summer between your second and third year, btw?
But I truly step here to try to give some advice of your sync problem:
1)Download VirtualDub
2)Make your videos with it, but with the settings of forced sync on (there's two: Sync video to the audio, or sync the audio to the video - I always choose the Video to the Audio - that's what works best for me)
3)Re-encode your video with the soft of your choice
.
AND then I guess that just uploading to youtube should fix your problem. If you use linux or Mac, or didn't work, sorry |:/
AND that's why I choose not to be an attorney. I wouldn't be able to handle having to lie to be able to get _BAD things_ to happen.
In your case, I would have to suggest you, if you wish to keep on, to lower your "moral standards" for now, until you (if you haven't gotten corrupted - REMEMBER: You believe you can go to HELL because of it! - I guess?) have an office and decide which cases to get.
"God bless, unless you're an atheist, then in that case, may the force be with you."
I LOL'd so hard when you said that.
With your disillusionment, I think it at has less to do with your theism and more to do with your sense of justice and sense of empathy for your fellow man.
Also, no shame in being an introvert. I am too, unfortunately.
this is why i advised you to think about who your clients are going to be, who you want to work for, before going in to law school. if your need to serve the community (as opposed to individuals or companies) is great, don't bag out - there are loads of public interest firms out there who need your skills.
in my experience it's the same with every profession. I am an engineer in mechanics. It only seems complicated and mystical for an outsider. Once you enter you discover it's just average people with extra skills doing the job.
I never feared flying before, now I will plan ahead to avoid flying when possible ;).
As for law I notice many Americans mistake it for justice. Law has different objective - to order the society in sensible fashion. Good judge can find a ballance between the two.
haha he probably wasn't, but i made him look like one anyway. oh well. yeahh, it does seem, now that i think about it, that youtube folks tend to be introverted.
you could dorm anywhere! as long as the university can afford dorms
I don't think you are disillusioned... As long as you don't try to limit science itself or attempt to kill people, I don't really care if you are religious.
LOL you look like my friend Ronak Patel. Lmfao.

I wonder what you would think about the following perspective...
1) Given it's just for everyone to have legal representation
and
2) To the degree the law is written in a just way
3) It is good and just for a lawyer to apply the law on an individual's behalf.

Idealism in Kafka?! Also I'd put big money that most youtubers are introverts in the real world.
