My Rx2 used to do that when I would gear down from high RPM. At night you could look in the rearview mirror and watch the whole back of the car light up! My buddy following behind me said it looked like a wick on bright yellow fire-cracker about explode...

The backfire is caused by the thermal reactor. That's an emissions device. Totally normal.

I got to call Bull shit on that one umanouski. Yes, rotory's come from the factory with a thermal reactor (exhaust manifold) but this car is running a header (you can tell just by the way it sounds) which eliminates the thermal reactor. The Backfire is caused by un-burnt fuel built up in the exhaust system.

All Mazda RX2s and 3s backfire. It was a problem for the rotary engine. It swallows gasoline. I had an Rx2 and an RX3 stationwagon. I put a straight pipe on one side and just had a small muffler. I could napalm the sidewalk at will.
