The moment Warner decided on Blu-Ray, it was over.
Instead of trying to keep it alive or make it positive to the point where it seemed like Toshiba was going to continue the fight, they should have announced the reality and make plans to phase out. There's no sense in sailing a sunken ship, so their positive spin was futile.
It is embarrassing, so it would be best to let it go and get it over with as quick as possible.
HD DVD really won the format war. Warner and Fox were going Red and Sony paid them off. Warner got 500 million to go blu exclusively and Fox got 100 million to stay blu. In the end deeper pockets won out.
Odd, as Blu-ray outsold HD-DVD all through 2007. I don't see why these companies would go red, especially as Warner expressly denied a payout and nothing in their financial statements indicated any such payout taking place.
HD DVD was cheaper and easier to distribute. And what she said was true, HD DVD delivered on its promise, where Blu-ray was rushed to the market.
Someone a couple of posts below me said that blu-ray had profile 2.0 which was "innovating". but what is being forgotten is profile 2 consisted of stuff that HD DVD was doing since the BEGINING!
The ONLY reason blu-ray sucseded was cus everyone that had a ps3 was counted as havin a blu-ray player, which i feel is wrong but o well, in the past now!
HD-DVD had advanteges over blu ray in the beginning. But blu-ray started adding up to the point that it got it's 2.0 profile. And toshiba did not do anything innovating.the name Hd DVD is so long and still has (old) dvd in it wich makes the blu ray name more catchy en new.But hddvd would have been cheaper t0 create and distribute.
that girl needs to get laid.she needs to have a coke and a smile and shut the fuck up blue ray won thats it thats like trying to sell a 360 in the year 2010 its dead tech staying power is what we want not an vcr its over xbox stop crying because next is the games mark my word.
The ONLY reason it was cheaper was because they were so bloody desperate for sales. Blu-Ray outsold HD-DVD every single week they were both on the market. That's not fanboy BS, that's sales figures.
The DVD forum has never done ANYTHING for consumers. It assumes we are all pirates etc... Wants movies to downsample to 540p if we dont use HDMI cables and HDCP is BULLSHIT.
I guess false advertising is legal now in the USA. Forceing technology onto us by only offering movies in the format THEY choose. her job title apparently being degraded from Toshiba HD DVD VP Marketing to merely Toshiba DVD VP Marketing. See Home Media Magazine on her latest comment, about 3-4 weeks ago
It might be a good idea for these companies to drop some of the extra features and focus more on super sharp picture quality! Most poeple dont even use the stuff anyway. My brother just puts in his movie and when it's over it goes back in the case. No internet stuff and he doesn't watch anything on the "special Features" disc! Then the HD-DVD and Blu-ray players can be super cheap. It's the picture quality stupid... (To the studios)
I'm a xbox owner for the fact that I love its online capabilities but being a past ps3 owner go Sony and blu-ray I knew it was going to happen it was a matter of time... I still support my console just for the games lol.

Wow, she sounds mad LOL. HD-DVD is dead, Blu-Ray was always better in my opinion. What she failed to mention was that for a time the cheapest HD-DVD player did NOT play at FullHD, it played at 1080i NOT FullHD 1080p.
HD DVD = Consumers first. Too bad people didn't get this message because you will be paying big bucks to Sony in the future if you want HD video. Forget economical players and discs that can be produced on the same lines as standard DVD. I am not afraid as an HD DVD owner however. I know even if studio support dries up there will still be players available. Toshiba will probably make an affordable dual format player. The millions of HD disks are not going to be just thrown out.
yeah HD DVD is dead. It actually is better and cheaper. The only reason its better is because of the online capabilities, Blu-Ray players wont be having that until October 08. Unless you have a PS3 this doesnt matter. But still, it said to see this format die, Toshiba needs to pack it up.
True the online features make it 'better' but who seriously has TIME to take advantage of all the web enabled features on ALL of their movies? I mean, I can't honestly remember a time that I sat down and just spent an entire day to watch behind the scenes?!
honestly, I'd rather have uncompressed PCM than lots of extras. Believe me, I don't use online feature so often (including PS3). It's useless for me (at least)
the online is not really a feature, its a must-have for future platforms. Its so much about download extras, but more for downloading updates and firmwares.
I guess she includes Dual BD/HD DVD from Samsung and LG (which are companies that admit being focused on BD instead of HD DVD). Onkyo, RCA, and Venturer are basically rebranded toshiba players
the hard media sales (i.e. porn on disc/tape) of the porn industry, however, is not the biggest. It might have been during Betamax vs. VHS, but not anymore. Most people download their porn these days instead of buying them on disc. Porn industry's choice of HD-DVD was done a while a ago and it didn't make much of a difference.
I love it how she says Toshiba has consumers in mind. Microsoft is a big part of the HD-DVD consortium, do they have consumers in mind? fuck no. People just want to watch movies and could care less about hooking it up to ethernet, possibly getting their player spammed and attacked. What's next? stoves with ethernet? Blu-ray (200GB max), as a physical medium, has more potential than HD-DVD (60GB max), and will be cheaper in the long run since HD-DVD would require a successor format sooner.
So THAT was the missing element in making "Maximum Overdrive" work?
Her speech was weak.... Too bad microkaka, but keep wasting your dollars on campaign blitzs, ans also on that vista garbage you're distributing as well. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
She sounds like she's going to cry. Probably because she's going to lose her job. HD-DVD is dead, 70% of the Hollywood movie industry is now Blu-Ray exclusive. I wonder how much money Toshiba & supporters are going to lose with all those HD-DVD players and discs that are not going to be sold.
what the hell is Toshiba I've only seen them make TV's and crapy computers. only because My bro has it and for Sony it's much of a everyday house hold item. TV, Computer, Game system, Movie Studio, DVDplayers ect.
sony is shit, buddy calm down. Microsoft doesnt copy shit, and toshiba owns sonys ass..cuz sony cant make a quality product that performs...notjust looks good and dies out a day after ur warranty ends...
Correct, if these idiots had a look on the net, they'd find that atleast Toshiba released a product that was complete from the start. Not ver 1.0 that cant play all the media that was released for it. Toshiba owned Sony from the start, it's just dumb asses with too much money thats making the rest of the world buy a inferior product. Toshiba has always been on top of Sony, and sony still hasn't caught up to the technology.
I lol when she talks about how hd dvd is the best for the "consumer" why, i dun give a fuk about PiP or any other crap i just wanna watch a movie, and yea therye a bit cheaper than blu ray atm but not by much. All that stupid extra shit they have blu ray is getting anyway.
looks like she's about to shit her self LMAO trying to make them self look good while getting turn down by Warner. Best 4th quarter for Toshiba but Rocking for Blu Ray getting Warner.
WTF your are really so fuck1ng stupid or just pretending? I cant believe, i'm not able to say why u hate HD-DVD so much. I prefer rather hddvd, but also i got respect to blu-ray. How i can see everybody, except me, who made a post here is a Sony fanboy. I have never seen so retarded posts as here. Lol.
Right afther she went to the lady's room and crap her self for 3 hours embarssing is'nt it. She could have just said one word Congratulation to Sony from Toshiba War over then that won't have to screw the dumb Consumers. They should all return the Players and HD-DVD movies and get there money back right.
Wow I love the acidic arguments about slight technical differences, all a bit pointless, they are BOTH excellent formats with regards to sound and viedo quality.
This woman reminds me of Chemical Ali during the Iraq war.........
One thing is that HD DVD is a nurdish acronym, Blu-ray sounds sooooo much better..lol
Oh and anyone want to sell their HD DVD I will give them £5.00 for it, as I would love a Hi-def cup holder.
I guess I can finally switch to High-Def Media. I've been waiting this out. It looks like HD-DVD will die pretty soon. It's even more interesting that HD-DVD wiil die before HD VMD, another high-def format not known by many people.
Toshiba is just going to lose even more money with HD-DVD. The best thing to do would be start making Blu-ray players. I really doubt there's anything Toshiba can do to save their format.
Toshiba looks and sounds like they got kicked in the nuts. Perplexed, hurt. Confused. LMAO. HD DVD is dead!!! Concede Toshiba, bow down to Blu ray!!!!!
This is YT at its best.Good hard point-counterpoint giving the audience some real insight on amazing technologies, and how the big corps. battle for the bucks.Reminds me of the old VHS-Beta days(from an old guy trying to stay current)Thanks guys!
Wow Blu-ray is taking over hd dvd? As if no one saw that coming. Everyone knew since the beginning that blu would soon win this war, but since xbox went with hd dvd, and everyone already had that player, everyone started rooting for the inferior product. Blu-ray offered larger media with far more versatility and expansion potential. It doesn't take a genius to know which is the better bet.
It's so cute the way you start waving your fancy imaginary degrees around and talk about what I don't know without offering up any sort of argument for yourself :P. Ok, mr illuminati, in this video, the spokeswoman says rather clearly that hd dvd is the "better choice for the consumer." If you're so business inclined, what you would have heard was hd dvd is "cheaper and less complex in order to hit the lower sale price".
My argument is already out there. If you used that brain cell of your's and researched a bit; heck, you might know a thing or two about HD DVD.
And Toshiba's angle about consumer needs is not just sale price. HD DVD offers better video and audio quality, its kept up with its promises (unlike Blu-Ray). HD DVD's interactivity is already there. Lest we forget that it uses the proven DVD-9 format so a much larger proportion of the technology is compatible with older technology.
You are lying your ass off. HD DVD isn't better than Blue-Ray you dumb ass bitch ! If it is, how come the majority of the movie industry backs up Blue-Ray and more consumers are buying Blue-Rays ? Try answering that question Mr.Smart-Ass.
Blu ray isn't so much more expensive just because sony is trying to make more money. It's because it's the latest state-of-the-art technology and the fact that they had the foresight to have the hardware firmware driven, it will continue to evolve and play new formats as they are created (I.E. blu ray 2.0). I suppose now you're going to say something about some silly codec? Ok, sit back down, junior.
Your argument about foresight is pretty unstable too. HD DVD is driven to meet current and future high-definition and storage needs. And to quote Bill Gates; "HD DVD and Blu-Ray are the last physical formats". In a few year's time the disc will be obselete; along with Sony's apparant foresight - which seemed to miss that. They're attempting to cater for a future physical media that simply wont be needed.
Ok, see now when you say things like "HD DVD offers better video and audio quality" That tells me something about your research. It hasn't been coming from an objective source. The video quality is exactly the same as blu ray. Period. It's the same resolution, using the same codec. If you want to get into it, Blu is the only format that uses UNCOMPRESSED audio.
Uncompressed is pretty unimportant if the compression is lossless. Lossless audio is required on HD DVD, not so for BR
Its not just the same codecs and resolutions, read/access times are also key, but the difference is minimal. And we probably do have a few more years with discs but technology is increasing almost exponentially these days
I guess it all comes down to preference. Personally: £100 on the HD DVD player and get 5 free HD DVDs? Practically pays for itself. Can't argue with that
Yeh - seen that. The HD DVD offer just pays for itself (buy £100 player, 5x HD DVDs priced at £20-£25 for free = £115 FREE). Therefore I'm £15 or so up - and 5 high def movies and a HD DVD player that works both on my console and PC.
You can say what you will about the future of formats, but fact is, people are all nuts about HD TV's now. As you know, people want to make use of them and streamed media will never ever come close to the data on a physical disk. I'd say, considering all the technological upgrades that would have to be made before HDD media can be realized, we still have a few years with the disk formats.
Finally someone who know the facts, people!!! Those assholes only releases Blu-Ray 1.0 and 1.5, you will never have any of those great features they promise!
Every Blu-ray studio is ranked as having both higher video and audio quality than the ones which supported HD-DVD. That includes the dual-format studios (when they were dual-format).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
She's right, HD DVD has keeped promises and Blu-Ray still doesn't have great features like HD DVD, just compare the back of a movie on HD DVD and Blu-Ray... =/ And if Blu-Ray untill now only has released BD 1.0 and 1.5(25gb) movies, that means HD DVD is more ready than Blu-Ray with it's extra's.
Worthless extras...the ONLY thing HD-DVD had that I wanted was picture-in-picture. Now Blu Ray has it with the most recent update, so I could care less about the other shitty features HD-DVDEAD. Worthless chat programs? Yeah, no thanks...I'll take uncompressed video and audio over that any day...
Uhm...that's where you are wrong. NO MOVIE STUDIO HAS PLAN FOR ANY BD 2.0 discs!!! >=| You are dead wrong, and HD DVD and Blu-Ray use the same codecs you idiot, the picture is the same (owyeah exept BD1.0 still uses MPEG-2) Dumbass...
"NO MOVIE STUDIO HAS PLAN FOR ANY BD 2.0 discs!!!"
Wrong. There are several titles in the works, including Disney's Sleeping Beauty in Q1 2008.
"(owyeah exept BD1.0 still uses MPEG-2)"
Wrong again. All profiles of Blu-ray are required to support MPEG-2, AVC and VC-1.
While we're at it, MPEG-2 is not a "bad" codec. It's just inefficient and requires more bandwidth/disc space/processing power to achieve the same quality as the MPEG-4 compression techniques.
umm.. niyooh, all blu-ray profiles, including 1.0, are capabile of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and VC1 decode. The reason why HD-DVD used VC1 and Blu-ray hardly did is because HD-DVD is FORCED to use VC1 due to space constraints. To the human eye, the quality is the same, but VC1 is more efficient in terms of disc space.
False, HD DVD is not 'Forced to use anything. HD DVD still uses MPeg 2 on some transfers. VC-1 is the Superior Codec, and toshiba wants it's customers to have the best. Sony is a money hungry conglomerate that 'Forces' region coding on its customers.
Jayjen, HD-DVD does not have enough space to put in a full length movie + additional features and leave it as MPEG2. VC1 is not better visual quality than MPEG2, it is just more efficient in terms of disc space. Blu-ray requires multi-channel uncompressed LPCM tracks on discs, does HD-DVD have that requirement? fuck no. Reason? disc space constraints. Every company out there only wants one thing: The customer's money.
Umm...no. Actually most Blu-Ray movies are still the one-layer discs and yes, they are 1.0 and 1.1 and did you hear already? Current Blu-Ray players will never be able to use any of the 2.0 features. Too bad =(
Correct, HD DVD players from the sale of the first player had the capability of Picture In Picture commentary(profile 1.1 for blu-ray)and accessing the internet to download content (profile 2.0 for Blu-ray due later this year) So Blu-ray supporters have had to wait nearly 2.5 years to get what HD DVD supporters have had from the start. Another bad choice by consumers that everyone will be paying for, in some case 3 times (profile 1, 1.1 and 2.0)
'The PS3 is getting a future firmware upgrade to make it 2.0, it has all the hardware necessary.' It is one of the best Blu-ray players on the market, but the audio aspect is a let down.
How so? the fact that it can't decode DTS HDMA, the fact that it doesn't bitstream the new codecs? very few players out there, both HD-DVD and Blu-ray, even do these. In one of your comments, you stated "HDDVD can downmix true HD to DTS, much of a muchness" -- I'm assuming you meant DTS HD by "true HD". Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray (including the PS3) can do this, it is part of the DTS HD core+extension standard.
jayjen, how so? Very few HD-DVD and Blu-ray players can even decode DTS HDMA or bitstream any of the advanced codecs. In your previous comments you implied that HD-DVD can obtain standard DTS from DTS-HD tracks, and Blu-ray cannot. Both Blu-ray (yes, incl. PS3) and HD-DVD can do this, it is part of the DTS core+extension standard. You sound like an undereducated insecure fanboy that provides false comments before doing research.
There's no such thing as BD 1.5. Where are you getting your information from?
And for the record, estimates put about 50% of Blu-ray movies released in 2007 on dual-layer, 50GB discs. That includes releases such as the entire Pirates trilogy, the Spider-man trilogy, Casino Royale, Cars, Ratatouille...the list goes on and on.
Then explain WHY they don't have the same content as the HD DVD's? Why do HD DVD's have more extra stuff and the same price tag (or lower =|)? There was a BD between 1.0 and 2.0, maybe it was 1.1 =O
2. Blu-ray can go up to 200GB, with 25GB and 50GB currently in production. The reason why 50GB discs are not used is that Blu-ray has enough storage using single layer only.
3. Seriously, how many people even mess with the interactive bullshit on movie discs? its for those people with way too much free time on their hands.
in bullshit we believe ... !

the online is not really a feature, its a must-have for future platforms. Its so much about download extras, but more for downloading updates and firmwares.

smokingun4073 4 years ago
the hard media sales (i.e. porn on disc/tape) of the porn industry, however, is not the biggest.

It doesn't take a genius to know which is the better bet.

niyooh 4 years ago
It's so cute the way you start waving your fancy imaginary degrees around and talk about what I don't know without offering up any sort of argument for yourself :P. Ok, mr illuminati, in this video, the spokeswoman says rather clearly that hd dvd is the "better choice for the consumer." If you're so business inclined, what you would have heard was hd dvd is "cheaper and less complex in order to hit the lower sale price".
BrainDecrease 4 years ago
My argument is already out there. If you used that brain cell of your's and researched a bit; heck, you might know a thing or two about HD DVD.
And Toshiba's angle about consumer needs is not just sale price. HD DVD offers better video and audio quality, its kept up with its promises (unlike Blu-Ray). HD DVD's interactivity is already there. Lest we forget that it uses the proven DVD-9 format so a much larger proportion of the technology is compatible with older technology.
jrmaty 4 years ago
You are lying your ass off. HD DVD isn't better than Blue-Ray you dumb ass bitch ! If it is, how come the majority of the movie industry backs up Blue-Ray and more consumers are buying Blue-Rays ? Try answering that question Mr.Smart-Ass.
mjdc2505 4 years ago
Blu ray isn't so much more expensive just because sony is trying to make more money. It's because it's the latest state-of-the-art technology and the fact that they had the foresight to have the hardware firmware driven, it will continue to evolve and play new formats as they are created (I.E. blu ray 2.0). I suppose now you're going to say something about some silly codec? Ok, sit back down, junior.
BrainDecrease 4 years ago
Your argument about foresight is pretty unstable too. HD DVD is driven to meet current and future high-definition and storage needs. And to quote Bill Gates; "HD DVD and Blu-Ray are the last physical formats". In a few year's time the disc will be obselete; along with Sony's apparant foresight - which seemed to miss that. They're attempting to cater for a future physical media that simply wont be needed.
jrmaty 4 years ago
Ok, see now when you say things like "HD DVD offers better video and audio quality" That tells me something about your research. It hasn't been coming from an objective source. The video quality is exactly the same as blu ray. Period. It's the same resolution, using the same codec. If you want to get into it, Blu is the only format that uses UNCOMPRESSED audio.
BrainDecrease 4 years ago
Uncompressed is pretty unimportant if the compression is lossless. Lossless audio is required on HD DVD, not so for BR
Its not just the same codecs and resolutions, read/access times are also key, but the difference is minimal. And we probably do have a few more years with discs but technology is increasing almost exponentially these days
I guess it all comes down to preference. Personally: £100 on the HD DVD player and get 5 free HD DVDs? Practically pays for itself. Can't argue with that
jrmaty 4 years ago
Stateside we have the same deal on blu ray players. Buy one and get 5 (6?) free movies.
BrainDecrease 4 years ago
Yeh - seen that. The HD DVD offer just pays for itself (buy £100 player, 5x HD DVDs priced at £20-£25 for free = £115 FREE). Therefore I'm £15 or so up - and 5 high def movies and a HD DVD player that works both on my console and PC.
Can't deny that's a good deal =].
jrmaty 4 years ago
You can say what you will about the future of formats, but fact is, people are all nuts about HD TV's now. As you know, people want to make use of them and streamed media will never ever come close to the data on a physical disk. I'd say, considering all the technological upgrades that would have to be made before HDD media can be realized, we still have a few years with the disk formats.
BrainDecrease 4 years ago
*sigh*
You guys. Do your research, don't just jump on the bandwagon. HD DVD in terms of cost, audio and picture quality has always had Blu-Ray beat.
Look around. Jeez. The information is out there.
jrmaty 4 years ago
Finally someone who know the facts, people!!! Those assholes only releases Blu-Ray 1.0 and 1.5, you will never have any of those great features they promise!
niyooh 4 years ago

She's right, HD DVD has keeped promises and Blu-Ray still doesn't have great features like HD DVD, just compare the back of a movie on HD DVD and Blu-Ray... =/ And if Blu-Ray untill now only has released BD 1.0 and 1.5(25gb) movies, that means HD DVD is more ready than Blu-Ray with it's extra's.
niyooh 4 years ago
Worthless extras...the ONLY thing HD-DVD had that I wanted was picture-in-picture. Now Blu Ray has it with the most recent update, so I could care less about the other shitty features HD-DVDEAD. Worthless chat programs? Yeah, no thanks...I'll take uncompressed video and audio over that any day...
SatansPeePee 4 years ago 6
Uhm...that's where you are wrong. NO MOVIE STUDIO HAS PLAN FOR ANY BD 2.0 discs!!! >=| You are dead wrong, and HD DVD and Blu-Ray use the same codecs you idiot, the picture is the same (owyeah exept BD1.0 still uses MPEG-2) Dumbass...
niyooh 4 years ago
1moreastronaut 4 years ago
umm.. niyooh, all blu-ray profiles, including 1.0, are capabile of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and VC1 decode. The reason why HD-DVD used VC1 and Blu-ray hardly did is because HD-DVD is FORCED to use VC1 due to space constraints. To the human eye, the quality is the same, but VC1 is more efficient in terms of disc space.
LMNaji135 4 years ago
False, HD DVD is not 'Forced to use anything. HD DVD still uses MPeg 2 on some transfers. VC-1 is the Superior Codec, and toshiba wants it's customers to have the best. Sony is a money hungry conglomerate that 'Forces' region coding on its customers.
jayjen880 4 years ago
Jayjen, HD-DVD does not have enough space to put in a full length movie + additional features and leave it as MPEG2. VC1 is not better visual quality than MPEG2, it is just more efficient in terms of disc space. Blu-ray requires multi-channel uncompressed LPCM tracks on discs, does HD-DVD have that requirement? fuck no. Reason? disc space constraints. Every company out there only wants one thing: The customer's money.
LMNaji135 4 years ago
Umm...no. Actually most Blu-Ray movies are still the one-layer discs and yes, they are 1.0 and 1.1 and did you hear already? Current Blu-Ray players will never be able to use any of the 2.0 features. Too bad =(
niyooh 4 years ago
Correct, HD DVD players from the sale of the first player had the capability of Picture In Picture commentary(profile 1.1 for blu-ray)and accessing the internet to download content (profile 2.0 for Blu-ray due later this year) So Blu-ray supporters have had to wait nearly 2.5 years to get what HD DVD supporters have had from the start. Another bad choice by consumers that everyone will be paying for, in some case 3 times (profile 1, 1.1 and 2.0)
jayjen880 4 years ago
"Umm...no. Actually most Blu-Ray movies are still the one-layer discs"
Because most movies out there only need a single layer currently. 2 Layer is there to use when needed.
"Current Blu-Ray players will never be able to use any of the 2.0 features."
-The PS3 is getting a future firmware upgrade to make it 2.0, it has all the hardware necessary.
LMNaji135 4 years ago
'The PS3 is getting a future firmware upgrade to make it 2.0, it has all the hardware necessary.' It is one of the best Blu-ray players on the market, but the audio aspect is a let down.
jayjen880 4 years ago
How so? the fact that it can't decode DTS HDMA, the fact that it doesn't bitstream the new codecs? very few players out there, both HD-DVD and Blu-ray, even do these.
LMNaji135 4 years ago
jayjen, how so? Very few HD-DVD and Blu-ray players can even decode DTS HDMA or bitstream any of the advanced codecs. In your previous comments you implied that HD-DVD can obtain standard DTS from DTS-HD tracks, and Blu-ray cannot. Both Blu-ray (yes, incl. PS3) and HD-DVD can do this, it is part of the DTS core+extension standard. You sound like an undereducated insecure fanboy that provides false comments before doing research.
LMNaji135 4 years ago
There's no such thing as BD 1.5. Where are you getting your information from?
And for the record, estimates put about 50% of Blu-ray movies released in 2007 on dual-layer, 50GB discs. That includes releases such as the entire Pirates trilogy, the Spider-man trilogy, Casino Royale, Cars, Ratatouille...the list goes on and on.
1moreastronaut 4 years ago
Then explain WHY they don't have the same content as the HD DVD's? Why do HD DVD's have more extra stuff and the same price tag (or lower =|)? There was a BD between 1.0 and 2.0, maybe it was 1.1 =O
niyooh 4 years ago
1. There's no such thing as BD 1.5
