It could make a cup to hold the drink or a tray to hold the food or perhaps a light weight knife and fork that is better than those disposable ones we buy...

Phu, it will always need human interaction to make another copy of itself. See it like a machine which can make objects (including it's own parts) with your help.

This has the potential of freeing us from dependence on local, industrial production and labor associated with it. How do you mean that will end humanity rather than giving us means to prosper?

hehe yes i know the posative aspect is greater independance from centrally control..

i guess my hope is the machines replace us, terminator style, control our numbers, stop us from multiplying like a virus.

the next stage in evolution.

after all.. random mutation created human-intelligence, so maybe it is feasible we could create something greater than us.

What our tools (machines) do and do not is not is up to us. If we want them to replace us, they will. We dont need a "terminator" to control our numbers. Knowledge and education is a much more powerful and less resource demanding tool for that.
