yeah that's right I strat crying. Because another human being, a species I which happen to belong to, could kick a ball...could lift himself... the rest of us, sad ass human beings up to a better place to be if only for a minute...
Let me tell you kid it was pretty god damn glorious.
This is absolutely a POWERFUL movie... It's not wrestling, it's not girls or high school, this movie is about life... It a'int the life that matters, it's what happens in it that matters !!!!!
Its not the six minutes.....it's what happens in those six minutes. Wow still get chills down my spine when i hear that. Love this movie! Cant wait to watch it with my kids when they are old enough to understand what this movie is about .I hope they feel the same way about it that i did and inspires tghem to do something great with their life!
I just told my daughter I'm to busy to go see her her softball game, then I close friend showed me this scene and I couldn't get to the field fast enough. Thank you so much for posting.
It is entirely possible that he was watching a Mexican channel that had commentators speaking and yelling in Spanish, even though Pele was Brazilian and spoke Portuguese. That happens all the time. They broadcast each others' games.
it's the character, he's not a professor- he says the "spanish channel" most Americans don't know the difference between Porteguese and Spanish - dialogue of chracters is not suppose to be technically correct, in fact it shows the character is not formally that educated, but has great wisdom. The screenwriter, I believe wrote it that way to show this
One of the best scenes ever for a sports movie. This movie and ecspecially this scene motivated me to the hilt to win a state title in 1986. I love this movie!
everytime i watch this (and this reinforces my earlier comment), i swear i cannot watch without getting teary eyed. because if a hard ass like elmo can, who else cannot? what great dialogue.
My brother was a high school wrestler when this movie came out in 1985. In an earlier scene, two wrestlers are involved in a scrap which is broken up by their coach. He then instructs them to run laps, saying, "You boys have too much energy." To which my brother responds, "That is EXACTLY what a coach would say."
There are moments in life where we remember what happens in those minutes, either yourself, could be your child or family member. But they all exist, today is a gift that is why it is called the Present. Live it!!
i wrestled for 15 years of my god given life and eveytime i watch this movie, this speech reminds me so much of those 15 years of blodd, sweat, and lots of tears...kudos to EVERY wrestler out there! keep the sport alive guys!
he must really see elmo as true friend. he stops by to visit hours before the match he visualized for months. elmo skips work and he checks on him. i'll bet louden didn't see this speech coming. i think subconciously louden realizes he can't take on the task of wrestling shute completely alone outside the mat. b/c when he gets on the mat he knows hes on an island all alone without other people supporting his effort.
i have my state in 1 week and this is my senior year and i got a torn acl but hearin that quote just makes me believe i will be a statechampion this year
I was equally impressed with the comments most made of the scene as I was with the scene itself. Very comforting to see people feel the way you guys do. It gives me hope. It's a beautiful scene. Thanks hugssss
it aint the six minutes, it what happens in the six minutes! classic! love this scene it makes me cry because he was right! how many people can actually say they were a part of something special! not many!
im from a small town in california wrestling is my life and now im coaching after i graduated last year to be honest this quote hits me in the heart everytime because i never realized that those six minutes seperated us from everyone else i cry hearing this because this is true
@bigtunabeliever What's more true than this speech is the fact that you make meaning for your life - you alone. It sounds like those six minutes are over, and they were great for sure, but now you have to find a new way to make meaning for your life. Elmo's character and this speech remind me of the importance of finding and creating meaning in my life both for, and outside of the six minutes of glory, wherever they come. Best of luck in your transition to coaching.
@billyjoet99 thank you and actually this was my second year coaching and i just got asked to be the head coach of one of my towns junior highs so im pretty grateful for whats happening
love how he doesn't tell Lauden how he needs to kick ass or how he needs to find himself or that his whole life has built up to this match with Schute. He simply tells him why he is forgoing work to be there. It's great filmmaking.
Very underrated movie. Alot of good life lessons in this movie, a young man in the peak of his physical performance challenging himself, yet also entangled with a woman and not quite yet mature enough to understand relationships.
Also, handling glory, the road to it not being easy, etc.
As a sports psychology student I agree with Elmo on the glory of zero sum competion. Whether it invokes that much emotion is embedded in perception, which is subjective on a per person basis. It's a great show and I do own a copy...actually.
@hendu13 Any athlete that has ever competed should choke up on this scene, I know I sure do, because I know what it's like to be consumed by sports and competition. Power and motivating, and very Oscar worthy IMO.
Having someone you care for watching you in sport makes competing feel that much more important. An audience is something but having someone you care for watching you watching you is so much more.
Fantastic speech! He's so right! It's not the 6 minutes, it's what happens in that six minutes!!! Lay it all out, and you will never live unsatisfied. Long Live Loudin Swain!
I'LL TELL YOU THIS: I AM CRYING IN WATCHING THIS SCENE.............I'M 38 AMD WHEN THIS MOVIE CAME OUT, I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, WRESTLING, FOR ONE OF THE TOUGHEST HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM IN OUR REGION...............SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO HIGH..........Looking back, I always wanted to have a relative, a close friend, watching me wrestle....sadly I never did...........If one day I decided to have a chil,,,,,I will be there for you SON.
I hear you and feel what you're saying. This movie brings back such memories. I graduated from high school in 1989 (West Linn, OR). A lot of the movie was filmed up in the Pacific Northwest, i think. The movie was such a motivator at the time, and still touches me today. Brings back so many memories. I hope that you are able to be there for your son, giving him the support that you should have had. Your words are heart-felt. (not to sound mushy, lol) :-)
wrestling stays with you, it teaches you how to be a fucking really good person man, wrestling is life, "once you wrestled, everything in life is easy"

Fantastic speech...but Pele is Brazilian, and they speak Portuguese, not Spanish.

@hgaston67: True. But the cook merely said the game was broadcasted in spanish.
Like, if a Yankees game was broadcasted in Brazil, even though the Yankees speak English, the game would be in Portuguese.
