PETE BEST WAS AND IS A DECENT DRUMMER THE BOYS JUST DIDNT LIKE HIS PARTICULAR STYLE AND THEFRE WAS A LOT OF CONFLICT WITH JEALOUSY DUE TO HIS ATTRACTION WITH THE FEMALE FANS OF HIM DRAWING AWAY THE ATTENTION FROM THE GROUP TRUE HE WASNT THE BEST DRUMMER BUT ALSO NOT THE WORST,GIVE THE MATE SOME CREDIT FOR GODS SAKES!!! HE IS STILL FAMOUS ARE YOU FAMOUS??WELL??...........
@GHOSTCHASER01 Dude, relax... @kainthevampireduck is right here. Pete Best was a loooooot worse than Ringo. Or do I need to prove it by writing in capital letters?
This cover version of a classic of Barrett Strong is laid out sound-technically even rougher than the version which marked in 1963 the end of her second album "With the Beatles" - in any case, one could already recognise that the Rock & Roll lay to them in the blood and they knew to handle with her instruments.
@nastar1 yep, I've had arguments with people that say "it was the same" or even "pete was better", and I'm like "WTF?, ARE YOU SERIOUS?, HAVE YOU EVER LISTENED TO PETE BEST?, HE'S NOT A DRUMMER, HE SUCKS!!!". the recordings that exist with pete best on drums prove how bad he was, how good Ringo is and that he was the right drummer for them.
@kainthevampireduck You should listen when he plays in Lee Curtis & The All Stars and Pete Best Four. He was a decent drummer, just different style than Ringo had.
I don't hear anything wrong with Pete's drumming. Going by the stuff that you read you would think the was unable to play. . like Stu who was terrible on bass. He sounds pretty darn tight on this stuff. I guess Ringo had the local type fame with Rory Storm. . ?
Hear the drum ? Hear the drum ~!???? That was "THE" Beatles sound....... until the day everyone kicked Pete out of the band 'cause he was too good looking. True story....
This sounds like a cover by a proto-punk band circa 1976, right down to Lennon's vibrato in the chorus. Does indeed show you how ahead of their time they were.
What gets me is why was this recorded January 1st 1962?? They were probably shot and hungover from New Years eve. Lennons voice is in shreds. I mean what kind of record company is holding auditions on New Years day? WTF?
Most People know of Paul and John trough the Beatles with George and Ringo- but I think they have always been great since they first started in with the Silver Beatles
nice and raw rock & roll. thanks for posting. BTW if ya dig roots rock & blues, find Van Morrison and his band "Them" doing "Just a Little Bit". I think it's the best thing he ever did, period. rock on!
Just to clear that up- the Beatles auditioned for George Martin with Best. Martin liked the group, but not the drummer. When they came back for the session they had Ringo, but Martin called in a session drummer just in case. He never called one again. And if you want to hear someone tell you Ringo is a good drummer- ask a drummer.
Again, George Martin called a session drummer because he had never heard the new guy (Ringo). The version of "Please Please Me " with tambourine is the session guy (Alan White) on drums and Ringo on tamb. The version without tambourine is Ringo on drums. Once he heard Ringo play, he was sold and never raised the issue of a session drummer again. Ringo wasn't the flashiest drummer, but his groove and creativity were phenomenal. The Beatles would not have been The Beatles with another drummer.
John said had said Pete Best was a good drummer, but Ringo was a good Beatle. Also he said that they didn't act fair with Pete with the way they sacked him.
For starters The Decca Tapes are avabale via Bootleg CD's. I own a copy of this Album. Pete best Drumming is good it is not weak. Ringo is a great drummer however. They were not called the Sliver Beatles at this time. They were called the Beatles. Pete Best had a very unquie style of drummer.
I've listened to several of these recordings with Best on the drums. His weakness ws his lack of technique on the bass drums - he constantly hits quarter-notes on that thing, even on "Till There Was You". Plus he rarely played accents on the tom-tom drum. Ringo was such a better drummer.
if pete was soooo horrible why did they cut albums with him as the drummer for years? he sounds pretty good here. the fact is they wanted him out because the girls were calling the beatles, the " pete best band" and he was stealing all the chicks...and paul was an egomaniac and wanted to be the " pretty boy" in the band....
Whether Pete Best was a great drummer, bad drummer, or in the middle, I still think he got a raw deal.

Too bad this recording makes John's voice sound too high pitched. It should be speed/pitch corrected.
