  • LOL "old"

This is awesome I wish I had half Petrucci's talent.

  • wow.....

  • OMG, <3<::::: heart4life

  • Best description ever!

  • I have the full Jam of this song in my channel, and better quality too. :D

  • @DTBootleg could you give me the link?? please? :D

  • @Varisynth or if it was the Japanese dub over 8000... but I prefer 9000.

  • who thought a bc rich through a randall could sound so magical!

  • Mike :(

  • wow 1080p, amazing!

  • @FatJudith lol... impressive power of observation.

  • I was skeptical if this was really them at first, but when I heard the guitar.. I knew just by the style it was John lol. (Bass is inaudible and drums are simple so i couldnt tell otherwise)

  • 0:00 - 1:03 OMG

  • Dude, I love the video description, so accurate !

  • @Varisynth

Must be kinda comfy though, not having to care about evolving technically so early on :P

  • This band had such humble beginnings...

  • Fantastic. All these years that I listen to DT I can say with no doubt their best years were 80's, When Dream And Day Unite is ethereal, supernatural diamond of music. I just cant understand why so many people like that boring music DT produced in 2000-s and dislike their early works. It's a shame that so few people know about one of the best their works, hypnotic "A Vision", and so many do headbang for the "rite of passage" shit etc. Thanks for video.

  • @Lightridergm I hate Metropolis album.

  • @uzickimajmunac so do I; think 99 is the point where they lost their face.

  • @Lightridergm who cares as long it is "prog".....:(

  • what bc rich model is that? i cant find this model anywhere..

  • @Varisynth i'm not trying to diss JP or anything..but in 1987,there's thousand more guitar player who play in these kind of level,it's the era of shredder, guys like Marty Friedman and Jason Becker..but then again,JP is Different....

and he can has level over 9000 if he wants to :D :D

  • @joelioes Yeah, but the 90's completely balanced that by not having any good musicians

  • ahh i wanted to see john myung!!! wait....... HOLY SHIT HES PLAYING A FOUR STRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Petrucci rochin a BC Rich! Classic stuff!

And as for technical level, of course, everyone has his limits. But also, when you get to a extremely high level, what's the point in going further? So you can't hear the notes you play?

It's not only about not being able to, it's about not needing/wanting to too.

  • holy crap this is old

  • john petrucci's golden years. i will cherish this video

  • @Varisynth Same with buckethead, who's at about 1990 did even higher skilled stuff than he did in the last 10 years. Actually, most of those high skilled guitarist can't go any further because they summarized any possible skill of guitar playing in the beginning of their way. We know of Paul Gilbert who did basically the same stuff back in the end of the 80's, in Racer X. Satriani, Lane, Vai, Malmsteen (bah) - never advanced any further too. I hope it's all clear enough to understand.

  • I DON'T LIKE THIS VIDEO BECAUSE JOHN PETRUCCI ISN'T IN IT ENOUGH!!!1

    *sarcasm*

  • Lol Old is not the word.

  • anybody know what year this was im think around 85ish

  • Can't be in 1985 cause Charlie's filming and he joined Majesty/Dream Theater in 1987...

  • It's really surprising that no one has put up a comment here that they suck or they're not so good or anything like that :O

  • hahahahahaha ur right dude xD..Im with u

  • that´s cuz they will never suck lol

  • I should quit playing guitar right now after watching that cause i'm that age right now and not nearly that good

  • well come on dude you can't compare yourself to the god of guitar

  • your right. I havnt been playing that long. i was just frustrated.

  • Don't compare yourself to him. You'll end up frustrating yourself for nothing >:

  • They used to practice for 6 hours a day.

  • None of us were/are, so it's ok. Just keep playing.

  • petrucci always was good, in that year and now, the best.

  • agreed my friend...and that goes for myung and portnoy too...LOVE them...jordan rudess is amazing too, but its the main three that are my favorites of Dream Theater...

  • those 3 + Kevin Moore...

  • cool

  • Comment removed

  • It's Randall.

  • John had already found his great sound

  • Damn, they already had more talent than most bands out there today. Ridiculous! Makes me want to jam all night!

  • it makes me want to quit bass. that was a lie. rather music.

  • petrucci was like 19 yrs old in this vid, and the guy had killer chops allready

  • i like them better as dream theater.

  • Would have been funny if band member's mother came: "DINER'S READY GUYS!!!!!"

  • LOL!

  • EXTM

  • ST model !!!

  • IBANEZ?

  • bc rich

  • this is amazing just as good as normal theatre

  • Classic a lot! xDD

  • hmmm...that's what they looked like. Was just 2 years old that time. Kinda funny how metalheads dress - up before.

  • All of them changed... well except ol' John Myung, but he might be the only one that can fit into his black leather nowadays

  • thats crazy! was this wen they wer at berklee?

  • yes it was since they formed it at berklee

  • this video was recorded when they 3 were studying at the university.

  • lawl

    thats nice!

    where did you found it?

  • anyone know what guitar petrucci is using there?

  • I know it's a B.C.Rich, but as for the model, no idea.

  • Isn't it the Gunslinger model, not sure about it but it's the only BC Rich I know with this kind of shape. Hope it helps.

  • I think it's an ST model.

  • Doesn't matter what guitar it is, only John Petrucci can make it sound good.

  • Well that is true lol

  • assassin model BC Rich

  • Before they were Dream Theater... They were... MAJESTY! lol

  • Ive been in that practice room! Someone put up a framed poster of them on the wall..its still a practice room...really cool

  • is this at berklee?

  • Petrucci even had great tone back then

  • Guys wrong info they did very well during the 2 years it's not like that and petrucci himself said he learned a lot about harmonizing, chord relation, ideas, improvisations and all those 2 years helped all of them out!Mayung even said he had a great bass teacher there so I hope that clears things out.

  • It's MYUNG not MAyung, how come everyone is spelling his name wrong...

  • prob cause thats how its pronounced

  • Well, it is pronounced "My-young" so I really don't know how you could spell it wrong...

  • sorry dude I meant Myung :) but I am a huge DT fan:)

  • It's cool bro, just saving you from embaressing yourself in front of Myung himself if you ever meet him. hah.

  • So who is the one who leaked this Vid?

  • jeez ive been worshiping these guys since i was born im still a teen and damn they are still good before they got famous

  • Well they did attend Berkeley before they got famous, Id say that helps :D

  • berklee* =]

  • For what they know they made 2 years not passing any exams they just kept playing togheter and creating the basis for majesty and then dream theater XD

  • For what they know they made 2 years not passing any exams they just kept playing togheter and creating the basis for majesty and then dream theater XD

  • Yeah they left berklee completely just to keep being DT =D

  • good old days huh? How old were they? 18 or 19??

  • Yeah, probably somewhere around that age. They dropped out just to play in majesty

  • Mike, Kevin, John Myung, and John Petrucci were 20. Haha Charlie was 36!

  • lol, he could've been their dad.

  • they can perform great even though they are still young, how'd they do that? is it becoz they are from berklee.??

  • No... They probably didn't do much at berkley at all because they only met there.

  • i mean, im sure they learned something from berklee so that when they met, they can apply something they've learned

  • yes. thank god petrucci looked through a door where portnoy was drumming to rush. if he hadn't, dream theater wouldn't be dream theater 2day. :) (taken from score)

  • they can perform great even though they are still young, how'd they do that? is it becoz they are from berklee.??

  • myungs playing a 4 string. i cant picture him doing that. haa

  • he plays a 4 string on a song or two in the systematic chaos dvd

  • really what songs? i want to learn them

  • i forgot which, just watch the DVD youll see him with one eventually. sorry i'm of no help

  • thank you. its fine

  • ytse is on 4 string

  • everything from their first album When Dream And Day Unite is played on four string.

  • my message was in response to jennalahm i think dream theater is the best band in the worlddddd!!!!!!!!

  • COOL^^

Hey - kevin moore is there too! You can hear the keyboard!

  • i find it amusing how many arrogant retards are out there. wat kind of music are you into? britney spears? timberland? its all commercialised bullshit which tragically appeals to 99.9% of society, which is why its called "mainstream". but if one looks at dream theater, they transcend mainstream in that its never been done before and meaning implied is too abstract for most mouth-breathers like jennalahm and novelboy to get theyr heads around...

  • although I'm into all kinds of music, I agree with you dude

  • I find it amusing that you state this when their last 5 albums have been produced by John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy.

  • That was actually sorta my point. Ever since the band ditched PROFESSIONAL producers, the music's been pretty...samey, to put it lightly.

  • Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But if you don't like the SONGS than your problem is more with the writing than with the production.

Having said that, I actually agree with you. I prefer older DT, up to and including SfaM. But I recognize that if a band progresses beyond my tastes then that's MY problem, not theirs. I admire bands that branch out and experiment, even if I don't like where they go. I'm still a DT fan, even though I'm not as fond of their last several albums.

  • Finally, we're getting somewhere! =D

See I'm sure you're at least somewhat familiar with the history of DT, where after FII they didn't like their producers re-writing their songs or telling them what kind of songs to write, so they decided to self-produce. Yeah, I'm not disappointed with the production quality, as I think production is still amazing as always (SC in 5.1...hot damn!).

My gripe is with the fact that they don't allow anyone to fix their weaker tracks anymore, so you get crap.

  • idiot

  • Petrucci and Portnoy produce their music!!!

  • novelboy2112 you make a gd point but these guys perfect themselves to no make mistakes they wont accept anything that isnt perfect and tbh they done well doing it since the start :)

  • I agree with you that in the area of technical proficiency, they're perfect. However, some of their songwriting is a bit...unpolished.

  • Agree with u 100% Novelboy2112 :)

  • Lol, these guys do play several different styles.

Listen to SDOIT in its entirety, it changes a lot.

And good job finding this video :o mustve been in portnoy's attic or something

  • love the hair JP

  • wow rare stuff here

  • jennalahm go fucking kill yourself, dream theater is the BEST band that has ever existed, way fucking better than ur fuckin GnR and Nine inch nails, tell me one person from any other band that has as much skill or unlikel more skill than any member of Dream Theater! b4 u start talkin shit u better know ur shit bitch

  • I want 80's

  • Are you kidding dude. They are an awsome band. They are pretty much amazing at everything they do. Majesty still rocked even though it was 23 years ago. Go listen to your hip hop crap. That's all made by a computer.

  • you´re going to say that queen is good name (and i really LOVE queen)

and if you think they are shreding maniacs, y recomendo you to listen the middle solo of learning to live, and the one from another day.

  • Yes, it is amazing. All the guys from Dream Theater can shred, but they can also shreed. Many people don't know that.

Oh, and, shut your bitch ass up. Its called talent. DT could cover any of the bands you listed but I doubt any of them could do more than a few DT songs, they're incompareable.

  • Yes, probabably they can cover any of my bands' songs but...Could they have written those songs in the first place? Tell me how many songs that could be considered "classic" DT has?? the answer is NONE. They might be skilled musicians, but below average songwriters, that's why the world never cared about them.

  • have you listened... ah... PULL ME UNDER? THE MIRROR? TAKE THE TIME?

    Idiot...

  • Yes, probabably they can cover any of my bands' songs but...Could they have written those songs in the first place? Tell me how many songs that could be considered "classic" DT has?? the answer is NONE. They might be skilled musicians, but below average songwriters, that's why the world never cared about them.

  • Someone's never taken the time to look at the intricacies of their music. Do your research or shut up.

  • Uhm, yea, you know, put 100.000 fans in front of a stage, and tell them "SING TAKE THE TIME!". Then you got your classic

  • If they do not have very famous songs it is because in the world there are many ignorant people as you that listens what the majority listens and not what really is good. I think that you are an ignoramus and does not know anything about music. Go to shit idiot and don't bother

  • Jesus, talk about the pot calling the kettle black. If you can't acknowledge that Dream Theater isn't perfect, you're more ignorant than those that don't acknowledge that Dream Theater is a great band. To each their own, I say.

  • novelboy2112 you are shit un pelotudo total

  • jajajaja

  • maybe you like britney spears "classics themes" XD...

but dream theater is an awesome band, much better than you XD!!!

  • So why do you suddenly bring up names? I don't care about the name NEARLY as much as the musicians themselves, but I don't know about you. And if you think DT is nothing but shredding, not only are you close-minded, but you make the effort to be close-minded.

And what do you mean by "uncool" and "cheesy?" You want an example of Uncool and Cheesy music, go listen to Dragonforce.

  • You use what you've got. If I could play as good as them, I sure as hell would incorporate that into my music. I'm sick of people dissing bands that shred... "There's no feeling to it". DT puts more feeling into their music than any other band out there.

  • They might shred, but they've worked for years to get that good. If you don't like that, DT plays SEVERAL different styles, listen to Vacant, Solitary Shell, The Spirit Carries On, I can go on and on. The point of musicianship isn't to be BORING!

  • Wow! I wonder what year was that!

  • You cant even hear John Myung for shit...kinda sucks but sick solo by Petrucci though

  • Ive once had a bc rich like that;), BC rich ASM platinum series with floyd:D.

  • OMG... great.. this video worths a lot!

  • Cool =D Thank you

  • thats the oldest shit ive ever seen still great though

  • I'd like to have that B.C. Rich Petrucci's playing.

  • its an assasin i think

  • Yup, an Assassin, or ASM.

  • The skill is clearly there but the structure is not.. Dream Theater (Majesty) have come a long way since the Majesty days. But this seems to be the first video of them ever playing together.. This was recorded in a basement of a store I believe.

  • no kidding.I know portnoy went on a scholarship.they sure do play like they graduated.

  • I once heard someone say that "if you actually graduate from Berkley... You failed." because all of the really great musicians get picked up before they have time to graduate

  • damn. do you know where that is from?

  • Nope :-/ Just something my music teacher told me

  • o. well that is a very cool saying.

  • they did'nt drop out of college

  • actually they did, surprisingly.

  • this was after they dropped out of berklee school of music i believe

  • Is it just me or does it seem pertucci's playing was at it's most creative peek around this time?

  • Personally he was just playing in a much more typical style then. His Yngwie, Racer X, and jazz fusion influences show a lot more in his old work. As of IAW, he personally created his own style. Sure it was a bit less experimental, but he was personally more unique at the same time then, and is now.

  • it isnt just you..i miss the old JP

  • Who old was he there??!! He played really good then, now of corse he broke my head every day, but there is really good

  • eh ??

you mean HOW OLD ARE THEY ??? i believe around 18 19 yo

  • John Petrucci is my fav guitar player, but in no way.... no way is that holdsworth.... holdsworth is a whole new level of playing...

  • I agree Holdsworth is different but if you check some of the licks he is playing and the kind of arrangement he is doing things in this video kind of has that influence dude. But anyways great playing:)

  • dude the gutiar in Budokan is a Music Man John Petrucci sgnatured not a BC Rich...And wow this is so Holdsworth type playing...This proves once agian John Petrucci is the man and hwo says he dosent have feel...

    Tc.

    Adios!

  • lice at Budokan DVD dosent have BC Rich man...It was his Music Man Signatured check again...

  • legendary...

its jus too bad that they havent recorded any of this stufff into an album :(

  • Petrucci Is A Legend, Hands Down..

  • Holdsworth-ish? Maybe if Holdsworth had two broken hands and a severe brain injury.

  • Very Holdsworth-ish. Cool to see them as kids, lol!

  • Wow, B.C Rich really had some very cool guitar models back then! Now they're all about death, blood and guts :S

  • i give a f* watt guitar was....i just wannna know were did u get that nice vid???

  • Yeah WhereTF did this come from? lol

  • Love him, plays with a lot of feel.

  • The guitar is a B.C Rich =)

  • Yes its an Ibanez.

  • no. back then he used a BC Rich
