Gauss canon and gauss defenses: nice way to trash money, research and production time. And they still useless as laser defenses and laser canons :)
Yep: lobstermans kick asses, and no doubt that the most experienced operatives should go to "thermal taser suicide". By the way gauss weapon is crap against lobstermans: this time is good for equipping team with sonic canons (except untrained aquants).
@Wrolak No, that's north of Denmark, so it must me Oslo, and they just fucked up the Gulf of Bothnia, along with everything else. Looking at the rest of the map, it must be one of the most horrible world maps I've ever seen in a commercial game.
I was laughing so much at the start of that terror mission! Mayhem and soldiers going down like 10 pins - and your voice so said - 'another terror mission like the last one - oh no!'!!!! :)
technical reason: the game is deliberately programmed to have a number of civilians (within a range - max of 16, IIRC) at each Terror Site.
Of course, since we don't really care about technical reasons... I'll just say they needed hostages to get your attention and then, when you got there, said the equivalent of "screw it" and started shooting the civilians.
A matter of quality of the difficulty curve. UFO was gentle enough to let you get by with the starting gear far better than you'll do in TftD. Although come lobstermen, it's quite the same. :<
speaking of the difficulty curve, it appears that TftD doesn't suffer from the "force Beginner Difficulty" bug that was in all of the DOS versions of UFO EU. (difficulty changes to Beginner after first combat)
yes, this does mean that unless Kiko fixed the bug (which isn't TOO terribly hard, just has to be done ONCE), he technically did his Antarctic run... on Beginner. Still did much better than I have ever done to date with a more ideal starting place (and multiple bases), still fun to watch.
I'm not sure I can rely on memory alone, but I think he used that fancy-pants X-Com utility thingy that contains the fix, along with other bugfixes. Wasn't it so that the main point of influence in difficulty was the number of aliens per mission? I thought there were more than plenty out there on the Antarctica run.
if you're talking about XComUtil, there's a few other "fixes" that it silently forces that I didn't see in the videos (you can see that the wall bug on base defense missions is NOT fixed - a fix that XComUtil does first if it does anything, and attempting to bypass it results in NOTHING being done to the game).
the only real way to check would be for someone to sit down and count the total number of alien units at the terror missions. I don't care enough about the difficulty to do that.
Biodrones (flying brains) may also be grouped with Tasoths. Those are somewhat harmed by Gauss weaponry (but still very tough). Alternatively, it may be a 'mixed' terror mission where you'll see a lot of all sorts of odd creatures.
In case of lobstermen, as noted previously; they have HUGE resistances against conventional weapons (and gauss). Sonic is only moderately effective. The best way to deal with them is (ironically) melee. Drills destroy lobsters, but even stunrods will work. Charge! ;)
By the way you can open doors (without walking through) in X-Com 2 by right clicking on the other side when facing it, as if looking at it again. That way you'll have the first shot always (if you can see the enemy).
"As you can see, Gauss is far more useful than the laser ever was in X-Com"
You spoke to soon, notice how many shots that Bio-Drone took... that's basically the situation with every enemy after a certain point in TftD. Research sonic weapons (which kill such enemies in one hit) before it's too late!
Yep, once you see the Lobstermen in this mission, you're going to want to scrub it. Lobstermen have a whopping 70% resistance to Gauss, meaning you'll need something like 5-8 shots to take one down.
"We have armor! Things are going to be so much better! :D"

I've already tried Gauss canons. Short range, and not very effective. DUP weapons (available in the purchase screen) are cheap and way better.

WAT
Laser weapons have unlimited ammo, far more accurate and almost everything was vulnerable to lasers!

Heck, A laser rifle managed to stun a Sectoid Leader for me. In January. With 50 scientists waiting.

That's... quite a lot of death. Near constant screaming of civvies.
One wonders how they managed to survive the half-day it took to fly there.
ScreamingDoom 2 years ago 31
I could come up with a really clever reason to show how they survived.
But we all know that isn't going to happen, so let's just say that penguins saved them until then and be done with it.
