Yes Remember German soldiers were respected for their tenacity. The Wehrmacht tried several times to get rid of the SS but couldn't. The Russian NKVD was just as bad. Had Germany not gone for the oil fields but secured themselves a foothold in Moscow and waited out the winter they would have won but they delayed and so allowed Russia top prepare.
The wehrmacht was very much responsible for Hitler gaining power in teh first place. And the Wehrmacht, or people in it, only started to trying to stop Hitler when they realised they wouldnt win the war(atleast with him onboar).
The Wehrmacht wasn't full of Nazi's, it was the branches such as the SS, Gestapo or other Nazi branches that were bad. If you don't believe me, then read Panzer Commander. If all Germans were Nazis, then we wouldn't see a postwar German Federal Army rebuilt using the men from the war.

@BENNYSIEGEL90 THAT is a good question. There were 2 transit points for oil shipment from the Caspian northwards. 1 was Astrakhan, in the NW, the other Gurev in the NE. Astrakhan up the Volga went to Moscow, Gorki etc, while Gurev shipments went to the Urals industral area. It is debatable if Stalingrad wasn't as much about cutting Sov oil shipments up the Volga as about Hitlers obsession with the name. If the Luftwaffe had put both terminals out of action, Stalin might have sued for peace.

If you're in the military you can't just say ''I don't want to fight'', especially not in nazi germany, that would mean you're a traitor, and you would most likely get shot or sent to prison. The holocaust would have been carried out mostly by non-military units, such as the gestapo or even regular citizens. Many of the Jews were killed by anti-communist and anti-Semite partisans in Yugoslavia and Poland, whilst the 6 million Jews executed in camps would have been watched by no more than 100 000 people, most of whom were simply guards.

@Colton8646 this was only because he pulled Germany out of an economic crisis that caused Germans to starve. He rebuilt industry, infrastructure, and gave hope to the German people that prosperity can come again to Germany. By the end of the war, the German's felt "liberated" from the Nazi regime when US and British pushed the Nazis out of the cities. Just remember that anyone who spoke out against the Nazis were sent to concentration camps.
Though worth mentioning is that the economic situation in Germany was a short term one. It was built on loans and most of the work came from building the war machine(in expectation for WW2)

Soviet Union lost something like 27 million in less than 4 years, strictly military is about 9 million. 1400 days/27,000,000= 19,285 dead per day (civilians inclusive) Strictly military 1400/9,000,000= 6,428 dead per day. So the Soviet Union has a battle 5x worse than Omaha beach every day for close to 4 years.

The germans lost something like 75% of their army fighting the Soviets. Failed to capture Moscow in Jan 1942, defeated at Stalingrad in Jan 1943, and defeated again at Kursk in July 1943. Meanwhile, despite massive Soviet losses, the Red Army just kept getting bigger, more well equipped, and eventually better strategies. Basically, without the USSR - the allies would have faced a German army 3 - 4 times larger, and with much higher morale.

The Wehrmacht wasn't full of Nazi's, it was the branches such as the SS, Gestapo or other Nazi branches that were bad. If you don't believe me, then read Panzer Commander. If all Germans were Nazis, then we wouldn't see a postwar German Federal Army rebuilt using the men from the war.

@BENNYSIEGEL90 THAT is a good question. There were 2 transit points for oil shipment from the Caspian northwards. 1 was Astrakhan, in the NW, the other Gurev in the NE. Astrakhan up the Volga went to Moscow, Gorki etc, while Gurev shipments went to the Urals industral area. It is debatable if Stalingrad wasn't as much about cutting Sov oil shipments up the Volga as about Hitlers obsession with the name. If the Luftwaffe had put both terminals out of action, Stalin might have sued for peace.

The The Wehrmacht are not neccesary ''the evil'' men in WW2... the SS are. Most of the wehrmacht are just regular soldiers that simply fought for their land. If you're in the military you can't just say ''I don't want to fight'', especially not in nazi germany, that would mean you're a traitor, and you would most likely get shot or sent to prison. I doubt many of these young men would say no if someone told them: shall we all go home?

@RedRiverChannel If it hadn't been for the Waffen-SS resistance to the Red Army, The Soviets wopuld have been in Berlin in 1944 when the Anglo-Americans were still on the beaches. Then Europe would have been full of little Soviet Republics, Germany would have been destroyed and there would have been Gulags and a European version of the ukrainian Holodomor. Behind the german front lines in Russia there was no reserves worth speaking of, none.

Horseshit! Only Wiking was there figthing when it really counted. Totenkopf clowns were stuck at Demnyansk while rest of the SS was "resting". Caucasus and Volga simply drowned in blood in 1942. After 1942 and Kursk it was pretty much over for Germany in Eastern Front. Only reason why russians were scared to take rest of Germany was because they had already lost 27 million and did not need a new war with USA.

@RedRiverChannel Well, even in the SS, most soldiers would have been good people, just very well trained and devoted to the party. The holocaust would have been carried out mostly by non-military units, such as the gestapo or even regular citizens. Many of the Jews were killed by anti-communist and anti-Semite partisans in Yugoslavia and Poland, whilst the 6 million Jews executed in camps would have been watched by no more than 100 000 people, most of whom were simply guards.

@Colton8646 this was only because he pulled Germany out of an economic crisis that caused Germans to starve. He rebuilt industry, infrastructure, and gave hope to the German people that prosperity can come again to Germany. By the end of the war, the German's felt "liberated" from the Nazi regime when US and British pushed the Nazis out of the cities. Just remember that anyone who spoke out against the Nazis were sent to concentration camps.

I totally agree with you.
"Stalingrad" should be watched by all fans of Band of Brothers (which is a very good movie indeed...).
In that awfull situation, German soldiers have suffered like froken animals.
I usually say that WWII has been Hell on Earth, the russian campaign has been the Hell of Hells and Stalingrad the Hell of Hells of Hells.
May all of them R.I.P., they have just done their duty...

I agree with you. Band of Brothers, from the point of view of propaganda is much better than Private Ryan and more honest. Stalingrad is a great movie as well, even if the budget is not the one of the american movies.
It must be shown (not should, must!) to all fans of american movies to let them understand that Germans were human beings as well, brothers together, full of fear and pain, exactly like the yankees. It is war that we MUST deeply hate, not soldiers...

@woobinda65 Yeah, bad as D-Day was, the Soviet Union had battles that bad or worse every day. If you figure there were 1000 dead at Omaha beach. Soviet Union lost something like 27 million in less than 4 years, strictly military is about 9 million. 1400 days/27,000,000= 19,285 dead per day (civilians inclusive) Strictly military 1400/9,000,000= 6,428 dead per day. So the Soviet Union has a battle 5x worse than Omaha beach every day for close to 4 years.

You're right, when Hollywood makes a movie on WWII, they make it from an American perspective almost every time. But don't make the mistake of thinking we're all so stupid that we think that only American soldiers experienced brotherhood, courage, and fear. I respect every soldier that fought in WWII and understand that all soldiers go through the same ordeals.

Anyway, I'm sure that many (not ALL) people are so used to watch yankee war movies (even very well done like Band of Brothers) that consider the other soldiers only dangerous evil animals to slaughter. I wrote dozens of times on other comments: each soldier of no matter which nation, MUST be judged for what he IS not for what he FIGHTS for.
I'm sure that many many Germans were excellent persons, loyal and, all in all, merciful.

The germans lost something like 75% of their army fighting the Soviets. Failed to capture Moscow in Jan 1942, defeated at Stalingrad in Jan 1943, and defeated again at Kursk in July 1943. Meanwhile, despite massive Soviet losses, the Red Army just kept getting bigger, more well equipped, and eventually better strategies. Basically, without the USSR - the allies would have faced a German army 3 - 4 times larger, and with much higher morale.

The MG is ridiculously frustrating.. I find I get sniped alot with it :/ I do enjoy the raw gritty feel in close quatres however.. I love the sfx of fighting room for room and floor for floor.. The whole, melee kills you in one hit is bollocks, it should only stun you, and the fact you can't melee if reloading is daft

Individual allied soldiers did rape, but there was no systematic genocide on the part of the allies. I know you weren't trying to compare separate cases of rape with histories largest genocide.
