Monster is definitely my favourite R.E.M. album in the 90s. Such a brilliant album from a brilliant band. I think this songs mocks the celebrity status, all those people that sell themselves to the media, attention whores.
When he snarls "I'm not your television" he clearly means "I have an integrity, I have a privacy. I'm not selling out like you all do"
And besides being an awesome song to listen to, I think this is a great song to make love \ whack off to. I don't know, it's sexy.
I think it's also the bands, or Stipe's, way of saying "You sell out and make your money but I'm not gonna do this music thing just for a fast insincere buck"
The part where Rain Pheonix comes in (at around 1:06) always gives me goosebumps.

@Soundfetischist Absolutely amazing ear, friend. I spent 17 years thinking that was some fancy work on the drums.

For years, Begin the Begin was head and shoulders the best song REM ever did (then they released this tune, Circus Envy et al)

Monster is basically R.E.M's most underrated album, but it's their best in my opinion. :)

This was the first song I learned to play on guitar oh so long ago when I was 8 or 9. This album is great, probably REM's best.

Brilliant - Peter Buck's Distorted and Delayed guitar is great here.

Actually Michael Stipe has called this song, "my Leonard Cohen rip-off"

Good song, great lyrics.
It sounds like something Lenord Cohen would write.

I think it's about people who make a living by doing nothing, and the people that love them so.
