I love this software, I've had it for years, and using it is very easy. One interesting feature Chris forgot to mention is that not only can you set your location on earth, but you can view the night sky from any celestial body! So, I could see what it looks like to look at the earth from the moon, or what it is like to see the sun from Mercury. Or even more astonishing is to see jupiter's moons from jupiter's "surface", and vice versa. It's really fun to play with.
I find Stellarium to be much better than Starry Night for all but the most serious amateurs. It looks great, is very intuitive, very slick, yet easy on computer resources, taking up only 63MB. Less is more!
Excellent video. I agree Stellarium is the most realistic free planetarium software around. You can also use it control a computerised GoTo Scope - I've controlled an HEQ5-PRO with it. You can also download alternate viewpoints - i.e. your viewpoint can be Husband Hill on Mars, or The Sea of Tranquility on The Moon (you actually see Earth in the sky)!
What do you mean the sky is moving? The planet is rotation (giving us our 24 hours) and we are moving through space around the sun.. The sky isn't moving..
The sky is moving you just do not notice it. For example we're in the Milky Way Galaxy which is moving through space (sky). M31 is moving through space (sky). The only things in space that do not move essentially are quasars, nebula, supernova, etc. However if they're in a galaxy they're moving w/ that galaxy because of that galaxies gravity. Just like the Earth is moving at 67,000 miles per hour around the sun, and you don't notice it.
Ok I don't want to sound like a prick but I wasn't talking about the expansion of space in my comment. And if were going to get on the subject then in theory then everything is "moving".
sweet, i already have celestia, but i've never heard of this one. too bad google already implemented something like this in google earth... oh well, i'll download this too
thanks so much for posting this! a mistake in rating, sorry.
this may sound lame but i heard that the rich greeks and romans could point out 40 stars by memory, i want to reach that level, i can name about 12 so far, this will certainly help! thanks for sharing!
hello guys I starting to look at astronomy and is the most amazing science ever. i love read articles frm black holes , new planets, time matter, I am kind of no money guy and can not get a telescope for now and for a while. there is any website that can conect me to a telescope or to a satelitte?
i am an amature astronomer also,i have a 10 inch astro physics apo refractor a 7 inch zeiss apq refractor a 20 inch zeiss mac newt and a 30 inch obession reflector.i use shy6 sky ware thats great.i have an ap 1200 mount.i do ccd of mars right now and sky 6 puts mars dead center fov.m31 the witches head neb, jupitar ,saturn, and various star clusters are fav targets.mars is excellent right now.great video too.
hey yo man thanks for the hint, that's exactly the proggy i needed for my purposes. i got the "solar system simulator" and "google earth" for hi-res images. now with this here "stellarium" i got all i need for planning my star-hunts at night. testing the program right now.
Celestia is actually better than Stellirum becasue it's a 3D envoroment of the known universe. The basic version isnt as good as it is with mods and plugins but you can add new stars, more extra solar planets, more moons, more galaxies, supernovas, nebulas, and even fictional stuff. To me, Celestia is the best.
Stellarium is a nice program, I use it on my Mac as well. But if you like this kind of software, you should try out KStars on Linux, it's free anyway and you'll be able to look at a lot of databases with information and pictures. Be sure to install all the extras as well.
I just tested the new ver. 9. It has a few bugs. Some will make the program hang. If you have an older ver. keep it. At least untill the bugs are fixed.
If you would like to get a more advanced program (that is also free) look for Cartes de Ciel. For the moon, look for Virtual Moon Atlas.
Stellarium is AWESOME. I've been using it for years. I even used it in my video debunking astrology to show that the constellations are off from the Zodiac.
if you click a planet or star, and press the space bar it centers it and tracks it if you have the time moving (stars moving accross your screen). Love this program, thanks Chris for giving me YET ANOTHER addictive program (Plasma Pong WOOO!!)
This software is amazing!

Both programs compliment one another. If you want closeups and exploration, Celestia; if you want a reference to the night sky, Stellarium.
