  • Back when the big boys used real cars to race!

  • Brings back memories of Martin Michigan in the late 70's. During one race a pair of Z28 staged together playing the "staging game" while both were maintaining a near 15k RPM rate, THAT sound is something I'll never forget...... like having 2 bee hives stuffed in your ears! The same day 1 particular BBC was leaving the line @11k +.

  • Like gonygonygo said, this is the best sound of all drag racing. Best cars too. Thanks for uploading.

  • 4 speed stick shift real racing. now we got delay boxes and powerglide..automatics should be banned.

  • ah man the best cars in history. along with the coverage.

  • Wow! look at all the views. Fantastic.

I'm trying this route to see if you get the mail quicker if I leave a mssg here.

    "Check your reg mail."

I love the sound of these Mods too.

This was quite an entertaining vid. Thumbs up!

  • This is where the 283's ruled supreme! Nothing like a short stroke V8! However that 6 banger is the real deal!

  • Pete Smith is my Step Father, he raced that corvette for several years, he was the modified runner up to Cotton Perry many times, but never did beat him. I remember building that car, just an old corvette, and long hot hours one summer turning it into a race car. Pete finally won at the World Finals though, Cotton Perry wasn't there! Wish there was more youtube videos of the Modified eliminator rounds!

  • One of our local guys here in Div 4 (Danny Guidry) used to have a beautiful black 62 Vette that he ran in D/MP. I can remember coming up through bracket racing and just lusting over that car. If you knew anything about driving/working on race cars, you had to love the guys in Modified. High winding small cubic inch motors, heavy flywheels and bulletproof trannies. Comp is fun to watch now but these old videos do tug at my heart.

    Great stuff guys!!!

  • @croozin2, Danny Guidry is my oldest brother. That vette was absolutely beautiful and fast as hell. Danny set at least on world record with that car and eventually sold the engine for HUGE money.

Thanks for the nice post. Merry Christmas!

  • Great stuff. REAL cars, REAL drivers. I ran all sorts of brackets up to Super Gas, starting at the tender age of 15 (!). Yeah, I lied about my age with a fake ID :P I started on a Muncie M-22 in my '66 GTO, and I was known for my 4-speed "work" and tree reflexes. Then I had the fortune to meet Ronnie Sox, and realized how much better he was than us mortals. This is REAL racing---not push-button, computer-controlled BS, IMHO. Gas, MP and S/S ruled !!!

  • @binnyman that is trans ny dad raced with , M-22 Muncie 4speed . named by GM The " Rock Crusher " cause the trans sounds like it's crushing and grinding up rock's . his car came from the factory with it , SS 396 12BOLT posi rearend 68' camaro .those tranny's are strong cause it had straight cut 9310 nickel alloy gears . but gear ratio's designed for can am road racing , not straight line drag . ratio's was 1st 2.20 2nd 1.64 3rd 1.24 4th 1.1 compared to the 833hemi 4speeds 2.88 1st

  • @binnyman and fords top loader 2.78 1st , the jerico's are copied from the ford top loader are consider oem by the N.H.R.A. Doug nash tranny's have 3.00 1st gears and any 2nd 3rd 4th 5th ratio's you want . before doug nash tranny's came out some chevy guy's put 833hemi 4speeds in there chevy's . bill mitchel owner of world products along with joel rosen of motion proformance did so with there A / MP camaro in the 70's that ran 9.40 et's

  • @pb8700538 belive it or not that car ended up right were i used to live in the 70's parked in a parking lot of the apartment complex , a guy in the navy bought it less motor back in 79' and was parked it there for many years . it was there until 85' . the trans was in the truck , we saw him take it out from under the car and put it in the truck of the car before he went out to sea . but even those tranny's cost about $1,200.00 back then .

  • @binnyman and you still had buy an all new racing clutch that was about $500.00 and a new sfi bellhousing $150.00 that lakewood made to mate a 833hemi trans to your small or big block chevy . not on top of a custom drive shaft with a mopar yoke . and your easly spending upwards of over 2grand , and in the 70's that was a lot of dough for guy who was on a budget making $12 per hr. with 3 kids and a mortgage to pay . my father did the best he could with what he had to work with .

  • sounds like nascars drag racing

  • @Gfok3 can you imagine, if you had Nascar Drag Racing?? That would be cool.

  • larry kopp

  • Nationals back in the early '90's, had my taste of IHRA Modified. Awesome class hands down, I know NHRA has modifieds in their SS class but you don't get the same excitement as it use to be.

    -Gil

  • I just found out that this race was actually from 1978, instead of '76.

  • I can't help but imagine that if you had Modified Eliminator Today, and what cars you run in that category.

  • @nhrafan1985 good question , my guess would be todays factory hotrods . domestic and import

  • @pb8700538 I think that would be part of it too, I think it would be cool that if you had cars from like the mid 60's to the mid 90's mixed in too.

  • @nhrafan1985 there is such a class ss/am thru ss/fm , super stock / a modified @nhra events . problem is the mid 60's cars are at a disadvantage cause the newer model cars can build a frame with in the body , the older cars came from the factory with a frame so it can only be backed half with a rollcage . unless a 70's vega was bulit but newer cars are more streamline and those cars cost about $150,000.00grand to build . and there still not as exciting to watch , the run almost like pro/stock

  • @pb8700538 How early are we talking then, probably cars from about the mid to late 80's or so?

  • @nhrafan1985 can but 80's mustang's would have the advantage cause of building a frame within the body . camaro's too but more so mustang's cause they are lighter . a class close to what your talking about is hot street in the P.S.C.A. , they like 60's nova's such as cotten perry's and 80's mustang's for that reason . but would not be the same as this era , take that nova for example . that's kind of car your grandmother used drive . you buy from her , or given to soak $8,500.

  • @nhrafan1985 and you would have a 10second race car to go racing with a small block chevy you built from junkyard . working for mcdonalds and be on national T.V. abc wideworld of sports , there was no espn . and if you broke parts such as trannys you go to the junkyard to get another .

  • @pb8700538 definately would be a rough way to race in this day and age, that's for sure.

  • @nhrafan1985 the famed reher morrison pro/stock team came from this era and the modified ranks before racing in pro/stock , and as david reher put it when the winning combination was in the juckyard , they started racing with junkyard engine block's and $25.00 dollar reground cranks . just last night i was on N.H.R.A. and there adding two more heads up classes , go check it out . cause what your talking about is going to happen . keep up the good work

  • @pb8700538 Reher-Morrison ran a '63 split-window 'Vette in, ohhh...H/Gas or something. A 265 (283?) small-block and a Doug Nash 5-speed trans. Wicked car. i remember reading that they liked to use only motors with 2-bolt mains, 'cause they were turning 10,000 RPM, and they could do that 'cause with only 2-bolts, the cranks could "walk around" in the journals at high RPM's !!! Awesome engineering !!! Peace:-)

  • @binnyman go look up reher morrison's website , that vette is in there photo's . it's class on the window is modified production . and yes h/gas cars run 265 (283) small-blocks , the differance between modified and gas classes is weight and fuel injection . gas cars are lighter and can run fuel injectors . there's a reason why it's called modified production , it's a car off the factory production line with all the heft from the factory with carbs on the engine

  • @binnyman wacth pete smith in this video , the class on his window g/mp he raced a h/gas vette . smith was given 4 tenths of a second head start which means that h/gas vette was running 10.30 second et's to smith 10.70 et's . the slower car and lower class car being smith , gas classes is a higher class . also the white g/mp camaro perry raced had less cubic in then smith because camaros are lighter that vettes by 100 to 200lbs off the factory production line . those year vettes are not light .

  • @binnyman ohhh... how i know my dad raced in both modified production and gas classes with a 68'camaro . your class is determined by the weight of your car and the size cubic in of your engine , tunnel rams or fuel injectors etc.

  • @binnyman also reher morrison liked 2bolt main blocks because they could drill the block for spayled 4bolt main caps , after market 4bolt spayled main caps are stronger than factory 4bolt main caps . reher morrison would also fill the water jackets half way with hardblock filler to make the block stronger but still have water to go through to cool the engine . a small-block reving 9500rpm with only 2bolt mains would leave the crank all 8rods and all 8pistons on the ground .

  • @binnyman larry kopp the guy with the white d/mp vette blew up an engine that bad . left all 8pistons , all 8rods , and the crank on the ground , i seen it in a racing magazine years ago . the N.H.R.A. was cleaning up the mess on the starting line , kopp had bill jenkins power . a 331'in small-block .

  • @binnyman that h/gas vette pete smith raced was faster than that green f/mp camaro larry kopp lost to via a head start .

  • @binnyman also by this year 1978 reher morrison was in pro/stock . when they raced in modified there was no doug nash 5-speed tranny's , they used oem factory 4- speeds . doug nash tranny's were new in 1978 , 79' came liberty and 80' brought us jerico tranny's . there was lenco's in the early 70's but were not legal for modified and gas class racing . those tranny's cost $2,000.00 my dad could not afford it but still managed low 10second et's . his car would have flew 9's with a doug nash trans

  • @binnyman all of these cars were shifting stock tranny's , 3years later in 81' perry's nova was running in the low 10seconds with a doug nash 5-speed . thats my dad would always say he knew were his car was lacking . go watch ihra modified eliminator brainerd optimist dragway right here on youtube , the year is 86' by that time all the modified's had thoses tranny's and see how they lift the front wheels off the ground with every gear change . the trans ratio's are wicked next to a stock trans

  • @pb8700538 - Did Cotton drop to the low 10s with the straight six...??? Or did he move up to a v8? To pull that kind of HP out of a straight six with no turbo/no nitrous is nearly unbelievable!

  • @tylersfs yes he did . cotten perrys lowest e.t. was 10.21 seconds with no turbo or nitrous . perry and his partner jim headrick pulled 650+ horespower with the straight six and three 2barrel carbs . in this video perry did not use a hoodscoop , later he did have one that nearly blocked he's visibility cause it was mounted on drivers side of the hood not in the center like V/8's because that is where perrys three 2 barrels poped out of the hood like tunnel rams do on a V/8 .

  • @tylersfs in this video and year perry was using two small 4barrels on a clifford manifold that did not need a hood scoop , much like a lowrise dual 4barrel manifold would be under the hood of a V/8 . perry made more power with three holley 650cfm 2barrels on a tunnel ram style custom made maifold . tough it was not just the engine that made perry's car fly low 10's in this video he using a oem factory 4speed trans , he later put a doug nash 5speed trans that is now gforce and richmond tranny's

  • @pb8700538 - as always, more GREAT informative information. Thanks!

  • @binnyman like the announcer steve evans said to cotten perry after he won this race , your just a super driver . well in my books they all super drivers , there was no shift lite tach's back then to tell you when to shift and they were power shifting ( meaning) with the gas pedal all the way down on the floor just taping the clutch pedal and banging the shifter back & fourth with stock oem tranny's anywhere from 8500 to 10,000rpm depending on your engine size , bigblock or smallblock

  • @binnyman today doug nash trann's are gforce and richmond , gforce bought out the race design and richmond bought out the street/strip design .

  • @binnyman a/mp was 7.5lbs per cubic inch , meaning 7.5lbs x 427ci = 3,202.5lbs , smith vette was 11.5lbs x 301ci = 3,461.5lbs and perry's h/mp 11lbs x 302ci =3,322lbs .perry's nova was lighter in a lower class because he had 2 cylinders less than smith V/8 . perry had a straight 6 that gave him a tenth of a second head start . the white g/mp camaro was 11.5lbs x 288ci = 3,312lbs . that is how the N.H.R.A. made the classes pounds per cubic inch .

  • @binnyman my father raced A / MP and B / MP , B / GAS and C / GAS

  • I've got this on DVD... love the modified eliminator sound... best sound in ALL OF DRAG RACING!!!!!!

  • Man, music to my ears! Modified Eliminator was my favorite eliminator back in the 1970s! They don't look or sound like this anymore. :-(

  • I was part of it. '68 Camaro 301 cu in. E/G F/G launched at 9000 rpm, shift at 9500 rpm, Nash 5 speed, Dana 60 w/ 6.50 gears. Lots of fun, lots of breakage! Great video! Thanks!

    John

  • @jrsn2cars

My Dad was a part of this era too. First driving with his C/MP then C/G 55 Chevy and B/G 1960 Corvette, and later wrenched on a 1970 E/MP Camaro, and a 1958 G/Gas Corvette.

  • @RacerRose so was my dad . but with one car , a 1968 camaro he bought brand new in 1968 . a ss/396ci from the factory . he 1st raced it b/stock then a/ fx , b/ mp , anand b/ gas . different size motors put his car in those classes . aint it kool to say your dad was a part of that era and being able to have been old enough to watch him race . and my dad won throphys in all of those classes he raced in 2 our local race track

  • @RacerRose i meant @ our local race track against cars that was just as fast as his was . and it was heads up no break out who ever got to the finish line 1st with out red lighting won , then after all the winners of there classes would race each other in a handicap format like this here we are watching on youtube

  • Great stuff!!!

  • I really enjoy seeing Cotton Perry with the straight 6 going quick!

I remember that car from old car magazines.
