Where do you get all the resources for the people who will stay alive forever and the ones that are coming into the world as well? And don't you think that you will get bored of life after 10,000 years?
i think its inevitable that we will achieve longevity, all this speculation about how it effects the "meaning of life" and such is totally irrelevant. we make the meaning. i would argue that the sole purpose of life and evolution is to achieve immortality. could it be that evolution is a striving of all species in a race towards immortality?
@advancedprimate There is, like you said, no meaning to life, so how can you argue that there is a race towards immortality? You might as well say that humanity is a virus, like Mr. Smith said in the Matrix, and that it infects the earth and has to be eradicated; but that is bullshit as well. There is just the question whether it is desirable to stay alive forever or not.
@advancedprimate "could it be that evolution is a striving of all species in a race towards immortality?"
No.
Evolution isn't an up grading system. It's not about getting more advance in general, but rather towards a specific niche. We are only what we are due to a strange set of events... 1 out of how many billions of organisms?
In fact, our genes kill us off, so we don't complete with our children. If life "wanted" to be immortal, i could've long ago. :)

Seriously, how anyone can so thoroughly violate common sense and one's survival instinct is completely beyond me. Sure, most deathists (like most theists etc.) are just sanctimonious, spineless, intellectually lazy conformists, and would no doubt all stand in line for the immortality treatment should it suddenly become available, but still... Why this pathological need to lie to oneself and others? Why can't they just say, 'yeah, aging sucks, hope they find a cure soon'?
I'm pretty sure Jesus' club is at capacity. Perhaps those of use with a mind to perfect the errors of generations of tyhe past could benefit man and the human experience by perfecting the world.
All enemies of reason, freedom & progress should be dumped on an island somewhere, naked and without technology of any kind, and forced to live & die like the primitive animals they are. Those who oppose science shouldn't be allowed to enjoy its fruits.
omg... this is the third time retard. BORDERLINE MENTAL DEFICIENT is 70-79 iq points. you are 2.34 points above being BORDERLINE mental deficient. i said it here: "81.34 is exactly 2.34 points above borderline mentally deficient." and here: "that puts you a whole 2 POINTS above being a borderline retard." besides, your whole argument is that you're 11 points above being a FULL retard, yet i'm 44 points above you, 4 times the gap between you and retards. fuck child, you are dumb. ;d
IQ's are over rated. Intelligence is something that is environmental factor's through the development as a young child, young adult and older in life. I don't understand how someone who wants to save the world could talk to other individuals like that. Comparing your IQ to someone elses is like a child. Hey, my dad could kick your dad's ass anyday! LOL
"IQ's are over rated." that's subjective according to individual persons and situations. "I don't understand how someone who wants to save the world could talk to other individuals like that." how's that? "Comparing your IQ to someone elses is like a child." not usually.. your insistence to make objective statements like that is unnerving. "Hey, my dad could kick your dad's ass anyday!" not sure what that's about... i suggest you read the whole interaction before voicing your opinion. ;d
If death really is the point in life then let me live for a couple thousand years or whatever and if im not satisifed i'll knock myself off and join the party.
if after we die we do come back would be nice to remember the last life and the knowledge instead of living forever in same body like a brain upload before death ..
I think he is trying to say that we might get above ourselves. Think about it, we would be rich beyond our current measures, have thousands of descendants, visit other planets etc... It wil be very easy to get carried away and after a while we will eventually forget the whole point. But still, I would love to have it.
When you take your 1000th holiday, or when you celebrate your 2000th birthday or aniversary etc, life might eventually start to sound like a broken record. By "the whole point" I mean that if life is short we are more likely to fulfill its purpose by living it to the full, however if we have oodles of time, we might end up not appreciating the value of life because we will take it too much for granted.
this part of the doco sets up a false debate. by using the quote from kass the argument becomes KASS: PRO DEATH vs immortalists. its a stupid debate - death is great vs we can actually eliminate death. the debate should be more, those who believe that death (at some point) is natural and inevitable vs those who believe in life extension. theres a big difference between immortality and life extension.
This series should have a section on the "death of the universe". They mention it in the introduction to the series that the universe will "eventually stop itself in heat death". Life extension is far more tangible than immortality.

1) learn how to construct a proper sentence, child.
2) your own opinion of the purpose of life means less to all of us than it even does to you.
3) enjoyment of life is not a purpose, it's a by product; you might come to understand that if your IQ ever surpasses 90.
;d
