Yeah, I grew up with Schooner Fare as well, and this was one of Tom's best songs, in my book. Dave sure has a knack for keeping his dad's tradition alive. His trio's rendition of "John Cook" is almost as good as Schooner Fare's.
Incidentally, the violinist on the far right is no longer with the trio. He's been replaced.
Yes, in mid 2008, Ed said to Dave and Kevin, "You know guys, this would be a lot more fun if someone else was doing it, and I know just exactly who that should be." He introduced them to his friend Eric McDonald, a mandolin player from Boston who made a seamless transition into the lineup. The rest is history.
And here's an update for those who haven't been in the loop - earlier this year, Dave and Kevin realized that having a band member living so far away limited their abilities to rehearse and made logistics for shows quite difficult (traffic and other transportation issues). They made the decision to let Eric move on and find another musician from Maine. They brought in a fiddler by the name of Zach Ovington and he is amazing. It's great to hear the sound of a fiddle in the DRT once again!
