  • 41 people dont know what he means...

  • i like al. a-bit stuck on himself and eccentric. Obviously a monster player in his style, but so are thousands of you tube and closet players.

  • NIce!

  • 2:44 I know what he meant --> "i a a a ahahaha a i a" i think it was some kind of morse code but with vowels

  • @XenoType008 it takes time for stuff like that to sound good to you. u have to understand it thats why you dont like it cos you havent explored it properly

  • This was very useful, thank you!

    Y'know what I mean?

  • Thank you very much !

  • @XenoType008 How in the flying fuck did your comment get so many thumbs up? It's one of the most ignorant things I've ever read concerning a musicians playing style. Get a fucking ear for music before you start spouting off bullshit like that.

  • @THEAndrewCS I agree with you.

  • *Plays a scale as difficult as fuck*

    then

    YouKnowWhat I mean ? :)

  • @XenoType008 this is pathetic, this isnt theory... this is phrasing

  • you know what i mean?

  • 2:44 ak ek ek ek ek ekekekek ik ek, you know what i mean?

  • @XenoType008 i can see that you are total idiot and that you dont have a singel di meola album....if his music is not worth of listen, then you are retarded asshole...dont give stupid coments....Mclaughlin and Al di Meola are some really rare guitar players who writes incredible music opposite of Joe satriani, Gilbert, Vai sintetic crap without any compositional skills, just music for need for speed 3 computer game....fuck you

  • I'm so freaking inlove with Al Di Meola until I would give my left big toe to meet him lol

  • He's pretty good, youknowwhatimean

  • @XenoType008 ... i very much enjoy the sound of the music he creates. People are all too critical of those who try to further themselves wit theory.

  • for all of you clowns on here that are bashing him because you "think" he comes off in an arrogant way...i have one question for you...Can you do it???..forget about weather he comes off arrogant or not the guy is a WORLD CLASS player and i think i am confident when i say this ..that i could bet my ENTIRE months salary that NONE of you can even set with a player of his class...thanks and have a great day!!!!

  • @XenoType008 Al strikes me as arrogant, I agree with that - but Scott Henderson? Come on, dude. You clearly just don't like him - which doesn't mean you're allowed to spit such uninformed, trite pigeon shit without supporting it with something a little more insightful. Scott, as with many other greats, understand that theory explains and allows us to discuss music in the absence of instruments. It does not define him, his style, or what he's able to do with the guitar.

  • Love his music....sorry I watched this... as Al says "know what I mean?"....

  • 2:45 stupidest moment of a guitar lesson ever.

  • Looks like he was drunk. Said "two times up" and played three up :-P

  • except you can totally alternate pick all that stuff

  • @XenoType008 because some people don't want to listen to the same stuff all the time. music is about inovation and it needs people to push the boundries. and besides maybe the "complex puzzle" that is unenjoyable to you is not so for someone else. no need for closed minds in music

  • "ya know what he mean?"

    ;D

  • @XenoType008 Obviously you missed the point or can't grasp the concept to which Al has touched upon. I met him many years ago. Actually ego wasn't even an issue. He was really down to earth an friendly fella. I have learned alot just from listening. While my style is a far cry from the way he plays. I still have to give credit where it's due.

  • Fuck you Al, you arrogant fuck, you're no shit!!!

  • you know what i mean...?

  • @XenoType008 You have no right whatsoever to be bagging on this guy. He's a phenomenal musician, which I can tell from your arrogant comment you will never be called, in any style of music. He's not the Miley Cyrus or Beiber of guitar because this stuff isn't a preset beat and one progression looped for 3 minutes with a love poem that sounds like it was written by a 5th grader auto-tuned on top of it; It has depth for people that don't "overload" like yourself. Have some respect.

  • @XenoType008 Where are the lessons on YOUR page? It just seems to say that you watch lady gaga and justin bieber videos, posting how crap they are, strange behaviour for someone who's an even better guitarist than al dimeola or dimebag? XD

  • What guitar brand plays Al on in this video? Suhr, PRS Guitar????

  • This so very deep. Melody means a lot, but rhythm should not be forgotten. Fantastic!

  • "y' know what i mean?"

  • @XenoType008 go learn you changes and shut up....your clueless...its a matter of taste ans your inner ear...i agree with trueslap below....you can play all this crap BUT if your time is off it doesnt matter....lighten up....

  • @XenoType008 yeah go fuck yourself. I had the pleasure of hanging out with scott and listen to him talk about music for about 2 years and theres nothing arrogant about the guy. He was always way chill and happy to explain his musical ideas or jam whatever I wanted. A true musician. Just because you dont understand it or just cant play it doesn't make them the assholes, It makes you the asshole.

  • @XenoType008 how on earth did your comment get that many likes? if it doesn't sound good to you, that's a product of your ear and your tastes, the majority of people with a musical ear prefer an accurate guitar tempo, any syncopation has to be well placed and reasoned, or you can shred all you like and not play with proper timing but don't expect musicians to like it.

  • 2:42 is hilarius :)

  • U know what I mean?

  • Al di MeLOLa

  • I didn't understand what he was saying about his alternate picking and how it makes mathematical sense or how he accents. Someone clarify please?

  • yeah I know what you mean ! Damnit.

  • @XenoType008 hey dude…..shut the fuck up!

  • @michel1162 looks like he has no idea what Al is talkin about .

  • ok those people out there who trash talk meola are the people who don't understand his music :-) read again "AL DI MEOLA LESSON" so dont expect that this video is for everyone, this is actually a secret technic that hes doin since the 70's..sense of time is very important again "SENSE OF TIME"...got it??

  • "you know what i mean?"

    Al Di Melola

  • @xnirsom pretty normal in america ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Al Di Meola is talking about spaces? Fuck he doesn't stop to leave any... just plays fast with ZERO feeling..

  • @attractivefrenchguy check this video out Al Di Meola - Senor Mouse

  • @XenoType008 slamming Al is justifiable. Slamming Scott Henderson makes you sound like an idiot.

  • eh uh eh ah eh eh eh eh ah uh *waves arm*

    know what i mean?

    No Al, no i don't

  • I like how there are parallels between what Al is talking about and the recent movement in certain metal bands with grooves and accents (djent, etc.)

  • vrey good lesson !

  • @XenoType008 someones pissed about their own musical talent

  • Al diyaknowwhatimean Melola

  • @XenoType008 yeah I'm guessing you don't any theory lol cause that's what all half ass players say haha

  • @XenoType008 I agree, though I don't get the arrogant vibe from Scott Henderson, especially in his old age. Al, though, is an arrogant prick. Every interview I've seen he goes on and on about himself and only rags on other players. Why can't he just play without the stupid ego? He thinks he's better than anyone else who doesn't strictly alternate pick but the truth is I'd rather listen to them any day; I don't really enjoy listening to him much, though I'm not ragging on anyone who does.

  • this isnt a guitar lesson more of his own personal opinion or theory on rhythm and stuff

  • THANX!!!!

  • I was totally going to comment "you know what I mean?" but someone beat me to it long ago...

  • Steve Morse does the up down up thing pretty well.

  • Somebody stole a bunch of dots off his fretboard. Know what I mean?

  • I love it when guitarists explain things:

    pluckpluckpluckpickpickpickdoodlydoodlydoo..

    "you know what I mean?"

  • I like the guy in the background..he never says yes he just grunts lol

  • This helped tremendously. I first saw this clip ages ago and took note of the foot tapping, and now I know notice I do it. Cheers Al.

  • A very good lesson!!!,is true.

  • @viorcustom

It is actually a good lesson, even though I would recomend a metronome while you are learning to play Di Meola style rather then tapping your foot. Di Meola´s foot is like a metronome most people don´t have that timing.

  • This is a very bad lesson.

  • @TomasMikaX unless your being sarcastic which i hope you are ... then your just unable to appreciate true talent. dont hate because you dont understand, hate because your missing out

  • @spike4379 I am not talking about his talent, I am talking about how this lesson is teaching you nothing.

  • I know what he means and think he is well up his own arse.

  • Thumbs up if you have no idea what he means.

  • "Spaces Scare People" you gotta love this lesson

  • You know what I mean? NO, I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. Hahaha.

  • Armand Assante is awesome.

  • makes sense to me

  • i gots me a metronome foot,what did you get for christmas,bitch?!

  • is, "know what i mean"?, the white boy translation of, "you unda'stan' what i'm sayn'"?

  • does anybody know what he meant?

  • DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?

  • al sounds so utterly bored in this video

  • 1. I like him!

    2. If the 'mathematical sense' Al referred to at around 5:25 was concerning the shortest trajectory for the plectrum to take, then I not only know what he means but can also say that his down-down-up advise was just wrong. The principles of economy picking (as opposed to alternate picking) would dictate that it be picked down-down-down, which, unlike Al's way, cuts out the need for the pick to be maneuvered around and then under the 3rd string.

    3. The timing advise was good shit.

  • @Jason011987 Addendum: down-down-down would only apply for the 1st time, repetitions of the phrase would require an up-down-down pattern.

  • @Jason011987 up-down-down is no more efficient than al's down-down-up. Both patterns require changing directions twice per sequence, its the same thing.

  • @Jason011987 You don't know what he meant.

With mathematical sense, he refers to an underlying pattern that will make your workflow on the guitar be much more richer since your muscle memory will already have embedded, basic patterns such as DDU and UUD, which are extremely common in picking between a set of 2 or 3 strings rather than the whole set of 6 strings. As he said, it's a mathematical sense, a foundational routing that can boost you. You can develop your own mathematical patterns.

  • @pran1zzle He didn't say anything about workflow, richness, or routing. That's just you being generous. The problem is 'mathematical sense' is a silly phrase as anything physical can be described mathematically.

I think what he actually meant in the video was 'intuitive sense.' Maintaining an overarching down-up pattern will keep things steady due to earlier learning, as you say.

I just think the mathematical traits of economy picking, which can be made intuitive, are much more compelling.

  • i dont know what you mean

  • 596 people are AI fans

  • ....is he drunk!?

  • this dude got some muscles !

  • I was waiting for him to break out of character eventually. This guy can't be like this all the time.

  • 2:45!

  • @elchafa lol

  • @woundspooden thats the key to rhythm. He didn't say to playing the guitar.

  • the key to playing the guitar is tapping your foot apparantly

  • @woundspooden It's true man. When I was at the guitar institute all the players who could do what he's talking about were good players, all the ones that couldn't were terrible players. You really can't over-emphasise the point.

  • "You know what I mean?"-Al Di Meola

  • best right hand technique in the world

  • Comment removed

  • You know what I mean? Duh duh duh duh dun. See what im saying?

  • <3

  • Know what I mean?

  • 29 people dont know what he means

  • In the "jaz" realm, I vastly prefer John Scofield... that's just my opinion.

  • Maybe so, but then you can write music on a com puter and have it be technicaly perfect, but it doesn't mean it's any good. For the record, I'm a guitar player who gig's every weekend and has a guitar in his hands every free minute I have. SO yreah, I AM a musician and I DO know what I'm talking about. IMO Jimmi Hendrix,. SRV, Jimmy Herring, hell buckethead... all of these guys ahve more feeling to their playing. I'm NOT saying this guy isn't an amazing player, I just don't care for him.

  • e,a,e,ah,e,a,e,ah. Youknowwhatimean.

  • @Pazak68

    HAHAHAH!!!!!

  • YouknowwhatImean? :D

  • 2:45 to 2:52 is the strangest thing I have ever seen him do...

  • And al di meola discovers something new! Racism!

  • Great player, good advice; it just seems that the coffee doesn't take effect until near the end of the video

  • WTF is this guy taling about... Sorry, but Jimmy Herring walks all over this guy IMO. I'm not a Jazz fusion guy though so maybe that's why I don't care for him too much...

  • your kidding right? I hope your not that deaf.

  • @GuitarFitch No I mean the guy's an awesome player for SURE, just prefer Jimmy Herring personaly. Al's exlpinations leave somethng to be desired, but then I guess he's not known for his talking eh...

  • Sometimes it seems that the better a player is, the worse they are at explaining. I do think Herring is really amazing. Check out my friend Todd Barth and Jimmy jamming when they were students at GIT (MI now)

  • @4rescue You clearly have not listed to Dimeola and have no musical training if you truly believe what you wrote. Dimeola's music sense, as well as his raw technique, is far beyond what Herring can do.

  • one word... unowatimeen

  • You know what i mean :) btw good lesson :D

  • Njunowannamean?

  • russel crowee????

  • You know what I mean?

  • Very good info...very insightful...good guy too.

  • yh ah ah ah ah ah ah ahahahah yh ah...you know what I mean? THAT IS THE KEY...

  • Al has held up in the looks department way better than the other guitar virtuosos. Shawn Lane was always a fatty boombah, but even Vai is starting to look kinda skeletal these day.

  • one of most overrated guitarists on the planet when it comes to improvistion, and an obnoxious prick as well !!!!

  • @guitar1963boy Al could blow most guitarists out of the water on shere technique how how you ever came to the conclusion that he is one of the most overrated guitarists beats me. The guy is a jazz fusion legend. He may be a prick ... a lot of the big musicians are...but who cared, the guy can play guitar and is d... good at it, too.

  • what kinda guitar is he using

  • If Shawn Lane was alive he would slap you for saying that about Al Di Meola

And far Jazz Giants you must be joking saying that Al is not a Jazz Legend.

Shawn lane is faster and was a Guitar Great for sure RIP. You must be a youngster

to say something like that about Al.

  • Dude Joscho Stephan is the Man but his rhythm in his right hand is not like Al's

And even Shawn did not have that kind of rhythm in his right hand Shawn was faster but his rhythm was nothing like Al's

  • forget diMeola. If you are into fast clean lines and intelligent phrasing listen to Joscho Stephan here on youtube. Why did this guy play with Paco and John, two musical giants ? compared to real talents like Shawn Lane Al is a kind of beginner .

  • Al's best bits:

    - "spaces scare people, they scare musicians"

    - "know what I mean?"

    - "e i a eh ah ug uh...that is key"

    - "forget about every other lesson in the book...you have to be able to tap your foot"

    - "two down, one up...mathematical sense"

Al...you are a crazy genius...no one knows what you mean.

  • @TheMightyReds5, I'm not a true musician, but I understand everything he's saying.

  • Al Di, I get what you're saying, but I don't know what you mean because it's above my mortal comprehension.

  • @bluescrusher the fun part about makin music is havin ur own creative ability. he's still doin wat he luvs, makin a new sound that he luvs, thas all that matters . . . right ?

  • this is beyond advanced. don't even attempt to understand this if you haven't suffered, suffocated and lost trying to find what to "say" with your playing. this is eye opening stuff, but you gotta have your eyes shut before you come here. I can't believe this is free! :)) awesome. I love UtuBe

  • You should smash all your acoustic guitars, tell Paul Reed Smith the paint job on your signature guitar is ugly, get out your old black Les Paul and tear it up like you used to when you still had some...you know what I mean?

  • I developed my rhyrhm... from playing rhythm...

  • This was abstract.

  • Al seriously talks like he could be in a Scorsese movie.

  • @DavePerry2012

    That's a Jersey accent you're enjoying.

  • @Daim0th Yea, I knew he was from Jersey, but I wasn't expecting that the first time I heard him talk. His accent is pretty strong. :-)

  • I wonder if Di Meola even knows who Peter Finger is? Why do I bring this up? Because if you were to put these two players in a room, and they had to play a solo guitar concert for an audience - Peter Finger would win hands down, because he can play a 5, 10 minute composition with fullness of sound and great compositions, whereas Di Meola does this start and stop stuff and his solo guitar with a pick is "thin" sounding. This is in response to Di Meola saying the pick is "king" !

  • @guitardw Dude is music and guitar playing a competition or about expressing yourself and your musicality? You shouldn't do a rat race... You know what i Mean? :D

  • I once heard Di Meola say the pick is "king" for articulation and he's never heard anyone that plays with fingers instead of pick be as articulate (as he is). Well, has DI Meola ever heard of a fingerstyle guitarist named Peter Finger? Finger uses thumbpick and fingerpicks, so maybe that's not quite what Al's saying, but I wonder if Al's ever heard any of Peter Finger's work - pieces like his new "Heading East", "Spice of Life", "Between the Lines", etc.

  • @jaccor45 DIDN'T KNOW HE HAS A DAUGHTER..... HOW OLD IS SHE? WHAT'S THE RUMOR?

  • No, Al, I don't know what you mean. if i did, i'd probably be a lot better guitar player, lol.

  • @MrXAVIERDB And Ritenour taps his foot all the time too

  • im so fuckn high!

  • You keep using that phrase, I don't think it means what you think it means...you know what I mean? Thats funny right there...you know what I mean?

  • @jaccor45 Whats the rumor

  • @jaccor45 Whats the rumor

  • Al is the greatest ''you know what i mean ''

  • @vase40 Vern

  • This guy is great, but no one wants to exercise the rhythm part... We all know that but it's just too hard.

We want the magic way, something like: "play this two notes raise your head, close your eyes and feel the music"

  • @ultimoorejondeltarro Are you joking?

  • @Whackooyzero Of course... hard work... life is hard, so it's music

  • 2:44 ... ill be using that dance move next time i go out

  • Here is what he is trying to say simplified:Tap your foot use it as a metronome improve your timing.

  • I've been using steel toe boots for my foot tapping with 5lb weight to give some resistance to my right hand - uh uh e , I have the door open , ya now what i mean , ah forget about it !

  • Your foot is more important than anything that your hands are doing - that's pretty much what he said.

  • @MrGuitarguy1986 ...and that's why I play guitar with my feet...

  • He plays this out there guitar line, looks at the guy and says "You know what I mean". Hilarious, his rhythm is uncanny and amazing but that shit was funny to me.

  • i can pat my head while rubbing my belly while walking and chewing gum all simultaneously, but i still don't know what he means

  • di meola ain't got anything I want...

  • He knows precisely what he's talking about. I've heard other teachers hammer on this exact thing. Unfortunately not all do, because they don't get it themselves, and because guitarists tend not to be brilliant rhythmically. Part of what East Indian music solidified for McLaughlin, Spanish music (in part) for Di Meola (I think). To know SOLIDLY where the beat is, in your gut, and still being able to be completely free around it, "outiside," but dead solid.

  • Damn! What if I don't have feet.... O_o

Seriously, I agree with the foot tapping thing.

  • This video is a perfect example of hard a time guys like di Meola and Jaco, who are/were GODS on their instruments, have in trying to explain what makes them so good lol.

  • 4:56 inspired by CALL OF KTULU
