  • An amazing video to accompany Karen's amazing vocals! Great Job.

The Carpenters released this on the 1977 album, "Passage". It should have been a single. Anne's version is awesome too.

  • Thanks for giving us Karen singing Anne's song....both do it so beautifully.....what a talent Karen was....miss her a lot.

  • @Suzi64grad Actually, the song was written by Steve Dorff, with co-writers Larry Herbstritt, Harry Lloyd, and Gloria Sklerov. Dusty Springfield, Karen Carpenter, and Anne Murray have done the song.

  • Karen wins. "...it happens every time."

  • Karen's version is perfect, crisp, there will be no other voice like hers. Richard mixed it so well, almost too well. Anne's voice is not as crisp, but that's what makes her so loved and desired by her fans (I am a fan of both). The "natural" sound of Anne is unbeatable, something that even Karen probably could not do, as she was such a perfectionist and the growls and grunts were not her style. I agree, enjoy both, the Dusty Springfield version is just as appreciable in my opinion!

  • I appreciate the copyright holders allowing me to keep this video on in exchange for ads to download this song on iTunes and Amazon. Personally, I recommend buying the whole CD. I did and I enjoy it greatly.

This is a much more intelligent arrangement than blocking peoples' videos. Some of us put great time and personal effort into making videos for these songs, yet we receive no compensation for our work. Why not work together to spread the love and beauty and bring happiness to others?

  • they both good, karen is more feeling and the quality of voice so undescribable,i loved karen version.

  • they both good, karen voice is more soothing and feeling, ilove it, i miss you karen rest and peace.

  • Is this really Karen Carpenter?

It kinda sounds like her but in a higher tone.

    Someone please tell me!

  • Yes. It's Karen Carpenter. Richard released some songs she did a couple years ago. It was a difficult emotional experience for him to do so.

Love, Hope, Peace, & Christ Is With Us All,

    Cal-el

  • Yes, without a doubt this is Karen. It was my first big record but it was too long for a single and Richard couldn't edit it because of the key changes.

  • I don't think it should be edited. I love it the way it is.

  • Karen Carpenter is simply the best popular singer ever. Richard Carpenter was the genius behind the Carpenters. Both were perfectionists and this shows throughout their body of work. I do not think that there has ever been a better group.

  • Anne Murray is a very fine singer, and I have always liked her version of this song, but Karen Carpenter's version is better. Her tone, phrasing, control, and quality of voice are unsurpassed. Richard Carpenter's arrangement and the the orchestration are perfect for Karen's vocal.

  • I agree. They're both good, but I certainly like Carpenters version better.

  • it's a matter of preference between narrative singing vs singing w/ piano. by narrative, i mean that karen's version emphasizes more of a heartfelt dialogue with her audience with the way she presents each lyric. either way, both artists have tremendous skill.

  • I'll agree that both artists have great skill. I do prefer Richard's instrumentation and Karen's hearfelt singing, though I can understand those who feel that Anne Murray touches their emotions better. Anne's Country sound bothers me a little, but that's personal preference, as you said. Sill, Karen just had a special way of adding just the right dynamics and that rasp at just the right times that touches my heart.

  • That is the big difference with anne and karen.Altough they are both good singers Anne just sang it while Karen sang it with feelings.

  • Karen Carpenter is wonderful. A truly one and only voice, and such a sweet person also. She is forever in our hearts.

  • wow!this is wonderful!!astonishing as i may say,the voice of my idol really stands out in any song that she sings!!!

  • I like anne's version, but carpenter got a very sweet voice. i love both.

  • For mine, the vocals are sublime but sadly RC contributed it's non-release. this is over-produced in comparison to the simpler but arguably more effective production of the Anne Murray version. damned shame cos the song was a total "fit" for her voice.

vocally i'll rate Karen Carpenter only just ahead of Anne Murray. Dusty Springfield version interesting but to my mind slightly "affected".

  • I actually like RC's production better. I like listening to symphonies, though. That may or may not be the difference. I rate Karen's voice a good bit above Anne Murray's, but it's Murray's nasal sound that bothers me. Dusty's is different. I agree with you on that one.

  • Cal, we do have considerable artistic common ground but my comments are specific to this song. Agree RC was a master arranger/producer but I feel the added length added nothing artistically and if anything makes it drag compared to the AM version. Vocally I admire both artists but like you, have an overall leaning to KC. To my mind, this song suits both their voices and both do it wonderful homage.

  • I like Anne's version. It's great for her and her voice. I do prefer this one. To me, it's more mellow and deeper. I enjoy the different instruments that pop up throughout the song. The song is beautiful and I don't mind it being longer, personally. I used to hate the 3 minuted restriction on songs. Your opinion is fine.

    Have a Merry Christmas!

  • Carpenters' arrangement of this song is phenomenal... not over-produced. Tony Peluso's guitar solo is stellar and Peter Knight's orchestration is awesome. Peter Knight is famed for orchestrating Moody Blues' classic "Days Of The Future Passed" album.

Karen's vocal performance outdoes Anne Murray's paint by numbers rendition by far. Karen is one of the world's finest vocalists of all-time.

  • I love this song! The way karen sings it too. others are good too but she's my favourite.

  • Karen Carpenter is the Greatest voice and composer of all time. No one will compare to her and Richard. They laid the tracks of music for so many other artists.

  • Without them, there would have been little beautiful music and harmony in the 70s. I, for one, DEFINITELY appreciated them!

Love, Hope, Peace, & Christ Be With You,

    Cal-el

  • wonderful song, voice and harmony

  • Both women have SPECTAULAR voices, but this one belongs to Karen. "A little good news" belongs to Anne. Either way, I love them both.

  • OMG I feel so flattered you'd respond to my video with this awesome video presentation! That's Tammy and Jonathan too from GL! WOW - what a treat! TY Cal! :_)

  • God, this is a good song.

  • Karen was wonderful, wasn't she?

  • Nope, not kidding about the premiere version of this song being released by Carpenters.

What year did Dusty cut this track? This version came out in September, 1977.

  • Interesting is to hear Celine Dion do a tribute version - higher still and pulling out some fireworks in true Celine style.. cracking tribute BUT nothing will surpass this version for me - what can I say Karen made me fall in love with this song and 'when I fall in love it will be forever'

  • Ok you want my opinion..the orchestration of this version is 1:1 class (bravo richard - spot on!) This is the lowest key of all versions and sits perfectly in Karens naturally expressive alto register..warmth and tenderness personified. By contrast Annes sounds a little cold and lacking in colour to my ears.

  • Karens voice is amazing and maybe the best one ever. but i fell that ann murray was able to put more feeling into this song.

  • Don't forget....this version is the ORIGINAL!! Came out a full year before Anne's version.

  • Are you kidding? The original version was sung by Dusty Springfild... Anne's best friend and one of the greates singers all time

  • I've never bought Richard's argument that this song was too long to be released as a single. "I Just Fall In Love Again" clocks in at 4:00. The song the Carpenters chose as their second single from the album, "Calling Occupants", was edited down from the album version, and released as a single, which clocks in at 3:59 ! I hardly think one second more of music would have made THAT much of a difference.

I love "Occupants", but this song should have come out as single.

  • Dear Superman. NOT!

I did happen to read your comments at the very end. Fortunately, I grew up listening to hits by Anne Murray and the Carpenters, I admire both artists and their beautiful voices. Each one having something special to offer in their own unique talent as singers/songwriters/artists.

  • Unfortunately, today we no longer hear the songs of yesteryears, and anyone who thinks these artists are no more than karaoke yesterdays sure don't appreciate music in its purest form nor do they have any respect or realization that if it weren't for the artists that go all way back Bach who were the first musician pioneers of the past centuries, then we wouldn't be having the commercial/digital music we listen to today. Despite the fact, that some of today's songs seem meaningless.

  • i grew up with the Anne Murray version and didn't discover the Carpenters version (and find their's was the original) until i did a "retrospective re-assessment" in recent years. judging both versions is hopscotch on a minefield as i value both. am on the same wavelength with oceanking re the vocals and saleability. RC was a master-arranger but inspite of another Tony Peluso solo, his lush arrangement here was less effective than the simpler one for Anne Murray.

  • I prefer Karen's version to Anne's. But, having said that, I think that Anne's version works better as a pop single. I believe even Richard said in an interview somewhere that as much as he liked this song, it was simply too long to release as a single back in '77. Another song that both Karen & Anne recorded is "Let Me Be the One," and Karen's version of that song is clearly the better one.

  • Oh... "Let Me Be the One" by Karen melts me everytime I hear it.

  • As far as i am concern Karen Carpenter was the FINEST female singer who ever LIVE!!!!!!

  • I feel that both women have a special quality to thier voices, that brings a certian magic to the ears and heart. And Although I Love Annne, Karen still, always has, and always will hold my heart.

To put one over the other is unfair. But if I must make A choice, I must go with the one who sings the words of my life. That is KAREN.

    With Love.

    Rest in Peace my Angle

  • Close your eyes. listen to both with an open mind. There's equal magic in each rendition. It's unfair to state which is the better. I know what I said before.

The arrangement for KC is richer. I still feel Karen plays this as a soft as a violin. Both Karen and Anne are gifted artists that God bestowed upon us. What do you think gals and guys? robk

  • Maybe to you, but everytime I hear Anne Murray sing it, I fear I might have to dig chewing tobacco out of my mouth after kissing her. lol (Just kidding about her country twang) I do NOT think it's unfair to state which is better. I believe in standing up for my freedom of expression and I am expressing that I prefer Karen's version. I prefer Karen's voice. Anne Murray's version is ok, though.

  • What a typical Yankee asshole know it all. Anne's vocals will always rule, and I love Karen...Anne's voice will always rule.

  • I'm from Texas, stupid.

  • then Tex , a little twang or scratchiness shouldnt bother you or are you one of those " Urban Cowboys"?

  • I said I was from Texas. I didn't say I was a cowboy! ;)

  • Karen lovingly pulls our heart strings. Somehow when you are deeply in love as my wife Lynda and I are. It has a deeper grasp on our emotions. Miss you kc. Thankyou Anne for the beautiful song. Only you kc can sing this right. RobK themagicvoice

  • I didn't know Karen sang this song...... but it really is magic. What a voice!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, Richard released it a while back. I'm not sure when it was officially released first. Karen has a voice that just tugs at your heart strings.

Love, Hope, Peace, & Christ Be With You,

    Cal-el

  • Thank you Cal..... I love it!

  • This song first appeared on the Carpenters' 1977 album PASSAGE. (Wow, 30 years ago already!)

  • Anne is an amazing talent, but Karen Carpenter was the queen of the love song. No one compares to Karen's beautiful vocals. Great video. I enjoyed it very much.

  • Anne Murray is goods but any fool knows that she did not sing that song better the Karen. Tell that person that he is tone deaf and stupid... Good job on the video by the way

  • I know anyone can sing this beautiful song... but I believed that Karen was/is the best. Voice was so clear as crystal. You are a LEGEND Karen. We love you. GOD Bless.

  • Both women had beautiful voices. I am from Canada and appreciate both. I would liken it to Anne Murray's voice seems like an older sister's to Karen's younger voice. Anne's is more huskier while Karen's is more younthful and crystalline

  • I prefer Karen, because she has a lower voice, it's more calm.

  • love it!!

  • NO! She's MY Karen!!! lol

Love, Hope, Peace, & Christ Be With You,

    Cal-el & Swissy

  • KAREN CARPENTER without a doubt...Karen had the most beautiful and clear voice EVER, and I see most of us agree, besides, who's Anne Murray, she is not very famous where I live, I listened to her on youtube a while ago and she sings cool but PLEASE, you can't compare her with MY KAREN!

  • Are you kidding? Anne Murray's version is thousand times better. But who can compare with the queen Murray. Not that this version were bad...

  • thanks for sending us your video! Karen and the Carpenters are a big thing here in Japan.

    peace!

  • I wholeheartedly agree!

Love, Hope, Peace, & Christ Be With You,

    Cal-el & Swissy

  • Karen, Karen, Karen!!!! Anne Murray is good, but not many can hold a candle to the pure sweet voice of Karen Carpenter.

  • let's all light candles!

  • I agree on the statement about Richard's musical arrangements. I like Anne Murray's version, but I love Karen Carpenter's.

Love, Hope, Peace, & Christ Be With You,\

    Cal-el & Swissy

  • I love the Anne Murray version... but this version is superior in many ways... probably for Richard's musical arrangements. I love the solo guitar...

  • I will admit that they are both good singers, but I don't particularly care for the country sound of Anne's voice. I might like to hear Ann Wilson sing this song, though. Karen will always be my favorite. My wife agrees.

Love, Hope, Peace, & Christ Be With You,

    Cal-el & Swissy

  • Karen and Anne -- two talented women with great voices. Which is the better singer? I am partial to the Carpenters, but I say they are both great singers!
