I totally understand the desire for remake, 70s American culture was different than 70s British, so telling the story with the 70s culture is the best way for Americans to identify with the story. I saw the American one first, and I loved it. But after seeing the first few episodes of the original, I have to admit it's better as far as the sic-fi mind-fuckery. The American version is still my favorite, but I'm loving the original and definitely am going to finish watching the series.
@discjockeyjole the 1973 was police purgatory because DI Drake gets shot and goes to 1981 in ashes to ashes. it turns out that Gene Hunt is a sort of saint peter who eventually let Tyler return to 2006. but tyler wanted to get back so he tried killing himself again to return, he did and was later killed in a car crash according to Gene Genie.
Almost done watching the American version (quite good), but hungry for more. Is the UK version available online to stream? Also, have any of you watched Ashes to Ashes? Any good?
@vita64 Ashes to Ashes isn't as good but still worth watching, mainly for Gene Genie, and while I like the US version, still not as good as the UK one.
One of my favourite things to do is show this series to my friends with no description beyond 'It's a cop show with John Simm in it.' Their shock and confusion is priceless. (With the end result being that they love it, but that goes without saying!)
I am somewhere in time iwth life on Mars Ashes to Ashes series. See I watched Ashes to Ashes season one, tey are aring Season two on just two more weeks, ( had too wait a year for that, though i enjoyed reruns cause there is so much detail and taste on the series ), and now i am Watching Life On Mars on another Channel. All Shows are awesome, so where am I back on 1973, waiting for !982, back on 2006, or 2010,? Gene is the man, great actor/character, so many angles, magnificent.
I've got both series on DVD and I love this show. As everyone else said though: the US version looks really cheap and rubbish. (No offence to you Americans :D)
Both shows are great, hard to judge. Overall I think the UK version is probably slightly better, but I think I enjoyed the US version more, because I watched it 1st. And also the ending was less ambiguous. The character of Ray was heaps better in US version, Michael Imperioli did an awesome job. Gene Hunt however was better in UK version. Both John Simm and Jason O'Mara were great as Sam; I slightly preferred Simm's portrayal. Other characters were similar. Annie was hot in both shows.
I am not sure what you mean by that, i was simply comparing the characters. I said that UK version of Gene Hunt portrayed by Philip Glenister was better. As much as I like Harvey Keitel he wasn't very believable in this role. Ray Carling, however was better in US version.
I disagree bro. I watched the final of the US series when it screened here on Fri night. The whole episode was building up to what I found to be a fizzer of an ending. Disapppointing.
in UK version they never really explained what the 1973 world was, how he got there and why. In US version they did. I am not saying that makes it a better ending, just less ambiguous. So I don't really see how US could be fuzzier?
You're right, they didn't explain what it was - that's what the spin-off 'Ashes to Ashes' is going to do in series 2 next year =/ I just hope they don't try to remake that as well...
Its been a while since i posted that comment. I've watched Ashes to Ashes since and loved it. I think a loved it even more than Life on Mars, probably for sentimental reasons as i grew up in the 80s. It has also cleared up a few things about what happened Sam. Looking to forward to season 3 now.
I love this show, I have bothe series on boxset and I'm watching Ashes to Ashes because Gene Hunts in it. This will always be my second favourite drama (No1 is Dr Who) and John Simm will always be one of my favourite actors
i just saw the american version and i thought it was great. haven't seen the british but think it would also be great and for those people who haven't seen the US 1 don't watch traliers for it coz they changed the US 1 like a billion times :first it was in LA and was like a comedy/ action then they changed every character except the main guy then made it in new york then changed a several things and after about a million shit traliers they finished it in a really really good series
watch the uk one mate ive just finished and i wolud say its in the top flight of anything the bbc has been involved in, some of the best telly ive had the fortune to stumble across
i still haven't seen the UK 1 but i'm pretty sure it's better after i've seen more clips of it. but it still doesn't mean the US 1 is shit (i know u never said that). so even tho the UK 1 is better you people should still watch the US1
they changed the content in the abc one to fit 70's America, so Americans are going to prefer it.
English people will prefer the BBC version for the same reasons.
Am English so I think the BBC version is better. I think it fits better but that might be because I don't get all the American aspects of the new version. doesn't make it crap though, still watching it and enjoying it. its a good idea for a show but if abc just showed our version america's wouldn't understand all of it
Haha, I did exactly the same thing as the person below! The US version looked so awful! Is it even funny? Because the original is so funny and tragic and brilliant all at the same time, and I don't see how that overly dramatic American remake could be nearly as good. Why couldn't they just watch the original? Wouldn't they think it quaint or something?
As an American, I doubt its quite as good as the BBC version. However, I plan on viewing the U.S. version first. Why not take a great chance of being entertained a 2nd time by the same story!?!
I might do that. But I just LOVE the original so much and all the characters are so real to me (not in an insane way, it's just so well crafted and acted) that it would just seem like someone else dramatising their lives. Which would be strange. And there's so much about the characters that's so inherently English that will have been changed to being inherently American that I probabaly woulnd't get it so much. But I might give the premiere a go and see what it's like. Just to be openminded :)

i live in manchester u dick and its the perfect setting 2 the drama!ur city is so crap u need a person in a costume 2 stop the crime cos ur police r shit
This is about as good as you can get for such a short trailer. It works great as a companion piece to the longer trailers. I especially liked that they took the time to choose different film clips, and fashioned them into a little "story". I also loved the tactic of having Sam knock on a door in 2006, and having it "open" in 1973! And that shot of Gene Hunt spinning around dramatically under the vintage "Police" lamp -great visual!
Yer Nicked, BBC trailer makers -for doing another class trailer!
Wicked series, can't belive it still isn't on over here in new Zealand. I downloaded all 8 eps early this year and still watch it again from time to time. Can't wait for series 2, it's taking too long to come out!!

PLEASE HELP ME OUT!
I really want to understand the end, but i don't.. okay..
Accident in 2006, coma-induced hallucination of 1973, wakes up in 2006, bored with modern life, kills himself to go back.
was the real world the 1970's or 2006?
If 1973, was it a sort of afterlife? Since he jumped to death and got back.
If 1973 was the real world and he was mad, how could he now all that stuff about the future..
