When there is no service the phone shows that you have none at the top and it stays there until you have service. Otherwise they realize that you dont need an ugly status bar at the top all the time.

In Mango, the signal strength shows up in areas where you need it, like the phone dialer or messaging. Battery indicator is also persistent when it gets low. In other situations you don't really need to see it. Kind of smart that way. Both also show on the lock screen.

I think the lag when changing from portrait to landscape is so that if you accidentally tilt your phone you can quickly switch it back without it going to landscape and back to portrait again, wasting more time...

The rotation speed has been confirmed to be intentional on the Nexus. It was designed to prevent accidental rotation, but just seems to make the phone seem slower than it actually is.

As a windows phone user on an HTC HD2, I've tried out both OS and ICS is a step toward the right direction for Android to make stock experience better. Galaxy Nexus wins IMO mostly because of Galaxy Nexus having better hardware overall. HTC needs to stop using LCD's and needs to up their battery size.
