when she steps forward and gives the down beat its chilling. at once she is centering and stablalizing the whole ensemble and at the same time making sure-through instinct that she is absolutely honoring the composer for her own performance. ive seen only the great artists do such things, to not be thrown by the orchestra, band or choir but rather to elevate the whole effort to something great.
Callas is one of the few who i think defies commentary. Genius speaks for itself. So ill shut up.
What a fabulous reaction she shows to the complete disorder in the choir at 1:45! She gives them the right beat at 1:57 (remember that she could hardly see the conductor) and in the end she hands the applause on to the choir (not on this copy). This is really cool AND charming!
This is yet another example by Callas of what art should be: a touch of humanity and much more than that. You can feel something is happening, you can almost touch it,but you can't name it. And yet everyone may feel it deep inside. Wowing.

I'm sorry, I just don't get it. I've been listening and playing classical music all my life and I still don't get why this singer commands such adulation. Her ability to dramatize the music is quite distinct, but her voice does nothing for me. It seems that there are so many other voices that I've heard that bring the music to life with much better precision. Frequently when I listen to her singing she sounds off key and wobbly. I know I'm opening up a can of worms, but I just don't get it.

She is GORGEOUS, wonderful dramatic actress - loved her in Madama Butterfly and disliked her voice in every other performance and the WORSE Norma I ever heard . I agree with the 33 dislikes which is my right as it is all others and how fortunate that we all have the entitlement to Opinion and to express ourselves as to how we feel. Music and Art are 100% subjective to the INDIVIDUAL and noone has the right to tell others how to feel and what to and what not to express on this website.

@lovingee1 Oh yeah? I'm quite the opposite actually. I believe that her Norma (especially the '55 one with Ebe Stignani) is just beyond all others' performances. (My own private sacrilege: I think Sutherland is the worst Norma!) Every soprano I hear I measure by the standard with which Callas raised. However, I do know she's ONE OF THE BEST, but not overwhelmingly so. Besides from Sutherland, there is also Edda Moser, & Sumi Jo who are right up there with Callas in talent.

The testimony to how phenomenal Maria Callas was can also be seen by the way the Chorus behind her is totally mesmerized by her! So much so that they come in completely late! Leaving Callas to signal her own entry again with a strong downbeat and a glance backwards to display her disapproval at their tardiness...But I don't think she even thought for one second that the poor Chorus Members were completely under her spell and forgot themselves totally! I think his whole outlook changed when he left Moscow University and went to St. Petersburg.
