These guys aren't exactly the Chicago of old, but they still love to tour and make music. I have followed the band since their first album (CTA), and it's a little beyond me why Champlin, who is a well repsected musician in his own right, is singing this song. Find a recent clip with Lamm singing it. More soulfull, more Kath sounding. Anyway, still love these guys. Can't look back or bring back the past. At least they are still out their rocking. ROCK ON CHICAGO!
I'm a former drummer, and Danny S. is a very 'intuitively musical' drummer.
He enforces the musics vibes and moods with what I call 'soulful drumming', even if he isn't an Overlord drummer technically.
Let me put it this way:
I'm wondering about Robert and his inner feelings, having parted with such strong characters and spirit-filled musicians as Terry Kath, Danny Seraphine and Peter Cetera........
Yeah this version is not as good, but Champlin does a good job singing it. And besides, covering their old songs is perfect. These songs are timeless and because Chicago keeps performing them is why they still have their fire. You could release them now and they probably would do okay on the charts. So covering their songs is great. It keeps the spirit of the band alive. For example, their thirtieth album isnt as good as their old stuff. They're better off covering the old ones.
I've always had a preference for Tris even though Danny is the original drummer. I like it simple and not so much "pitty-patting" as danny seemed to do. Tris locks that groove in and doesn't deviate from it unless it's in the arrangement.
you've got to remember that this version of the band is comprised of some of the original members of CTA. Scheff's been playing with them since cetera went solo, and i bet Tris has been there that long too.
Tris is just better because he plays simple, he doesn't play to many notes as the old drummer, his fills are much better and clean and that's why they have him in the band among other things, and as we all know or should know he has a better sound hevier..
The thing that destroys this performance is Bill Champlin's vocal --- it's like he isn't trying and he's playing with the melody very badly --- Terry Kath is rolling in his grave over this one, and it's a shame as Bill can sing extremely well when he tries and I love his vocal normally. This isn't the 1st time he's been a vocal slacker either.
The big band probably means they were doing stuff from 'Night & Day.' Would like to see that. As a sidenote, this is a good example of why Tris Imboden (while I'm sure a great time-keeper) isn't anywhere in Danny Seraphine's league--his fill going into the first verse has all the feel and subtlety of a sledgehammer.
I agree --- I can't understand why the band thought Danny Seraphine wasn't a good drummer unless he just didn't have his heart as much into the band as they would have liked. He's also a small guy, and the guys in Chicago are all pretty tall, maybe there was a Napoleonic complex problem with him. ;-)
it was thought by some that Danny didn't spend enough time practicing and therefore the live shows suffered...Danny says he felt he was stabbed in the back by band politics. IMDB
@TheBeaugraham you're right. When I posted that I hadnt done my research. You're totally right. Danny always played what fit the music and he didn't have a choice but to keep it simple for the 80s tunes. I bet it did drive him nuts that he couldnt go to his maximum skill in the studio. I even think Chicago 18 was all programmed. He did some of the programming, but he wasnt even playing at all on the record...he had to have been hating it.
@drummerboyjac For Sure man i know people have a right to like what they want but im sorry outside out Chicago-16 everything else was terrible. Hey do me a favor i have a lot of Chicago's early stuff can you name me a handful of songs that Danny Serephine drums the best on. I would also take Danny over Bonham and Peart anyday he is just more intresting to listen to you know
@TheBeaugraham I agree. Peart and Bonham were bashers....Seraphine played with technique and presicion that cant be beat.
Danny played best on all of his tunes, but I have a few that stand out:
-Devil's Sweet, What's This World Coming To?, Lowdown, Ballet For a Girl In Buchannon (entire), all of Chicago III, In The Country, Introduction, Questions 67 & 68, and the Live In Japan album. He went crazy live. There's more but those are the ones I automaticaly thought of
@drummerboyjac I have heard every one of those songs multiple times. I own most of those songs i will listen again and single out just the drums. He is one of the best drummers in rock for sure, are you firmiliar with Bobby Columby the drummer what do you think of him???
@TheBeaugraham I do like BS&T. I think some of their stuff is very catchy, fun to listen to and play. Columby is someone who I think is vastly underrated as far as drumming goes. But I am also a fan of his production skills with albums in the late seventies. But I also think BS&T came and went, without leaving the mark Chicago did. More than one hit wonders, but not a group that had the chemestry or input to last. Just my opinion; but yes, I do like Bobby Columby. Very skilled jazz drummer.
@drummerboyjac Yah man I would say Bobby Columby is similar to Danny S. Blood, Sweat & Tears have some great songs from thier first four albums i have some of thier tunes that werent hits. I love their version of smiling phases and god bless the child, more and more, redemption. You are right Chicago was a better band and wrote better songs not to mention a better guitarist and three great lead singers. B,S&T faded away very fast didnt they. Im wonderin if B,S&T were a tighter band than chicago.
Chcago needs to retire.

Sounds way to "gay" as compared to Kath's raw performance. i agree;Kath's is much better.

yeah i agree terry kath should be the only one who ever sings this song. Champlain is cool and all but he just doesnt have the voice for this song

...or any of these songs, except the ones he originally sings.

To me Danny Seraphine with Terry Kath where the engines behind the great old Chicago band half 60's half 70's.
one of my influences for me to get into drumming will always be Danny, I used to listen to his solo of I'm a man over and over way back in the 70's
so to me ealy CHICAGO with original members with leader Terry Kath will allways be the best.

damn, background vocals are terrible, they do not even have a decent voice, and why did you cut the small drum solo at the end?? its the best part.

RL has sung it at shows where Champlin was unable to attend. There's a video of it here on youtube.

Terry was THE ONE who sang it originally.
Period.

Chicago was so much better with the old singer, their old stuff is much better than their newer stuff

This comment has received too many negative votes show
they should compose new songs - covering thier old songs is pretty disappointing.
The 70ies are over and so the Feeling all these Songs had. This Version is a piece of crap..

that is a very unfair comparison because Danny is more old school than Tris. it's like saying pepper is not as good as salt.
