This is the best version of Sheep May Safely Graze I have heard. The harpsichord really complements it well. Would love to know if this version is available on CD.
"Music is like a tiger. I don't mean to say that it's vicious. What I mean is that music, or musical harmonies and melodies, have a tendency to camoflague themselves in the forest of the soul, that great subconscious rainforest. Yet, despite being a rainforest, and not a temperate zone, sheep dwell therein. That is why I wrote a song about sheep. Sheep of the subconscious rainforest, and no, I do not have a valium addiction." ---- J. S. Bach, Leipzig, 1741.
Harmony within and harmony without, all things placed as they should be placed. So self-contained and self-sufficient. Nothing else required. All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds. I like Bach.
Bach's music seems to merge the organic and spiritual worlds. He often came up with these little patterns, these flourishes like in this piece, that seem simple but strike a chord in your being. It's like looking at patterns in nature, like Mandelbrots or simply magnifications of seashells or "simple" life. But Bach's music comes alive and talks directly to your head and heart. For those who have the capacity to listen.
Bach est pour moi le plus moderne des compositeur classique.Toute sa musique peut être adaptée à diverses situations sans jamais rien perdre de son origine.Que ce soit pour les puristes ou pour les plus "techno",Bach est un maître!!!
there is something about that picture. Maybe our sunglasses will one day look like the powdered wig does.... Future generations will laugh and think, what were those weirdos thinking. and the music ain't hurting either.
Thanks. e Hector, I've got this short etude like tune in my head i picked up somewhere and i'm sure it's bach, i thought the sheep save to graze was it. but it's not. '
sounds like it's in D major , damn how could i google a melody, but i's off course beautiful and stately like the feeling i get from it is resolve. does it ring a bell to anyone out there. Boy do i need to hear this one. ha ha i have to laugh . that dick bach. yea i guess you could be arrogant if your bach.
@vulkein A lot of classical composers had their songs organized after their deaths by other guys. So Bach's stuff was organized by some other people who labeled it BWV. Mozart's are labeled K, or KV, and his are in order chronologically. Bach's are in order thematically.
@vulkein "The Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (Bach Works Catalogue) is the numbering system identifying compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. The prefix BWV, followed by the work's number is the shorthand identification for Bach's compositions. The works are grouped thematically, not chronologically."
This sounds like the recording I grew up with.. from the 'Your Hundred Best Tunes' LP from the BBC radio series. My mum used to put it on loud to do the vacuuming!
Johann Sebastian Bach was predominately an Organist. He once walked 200 hundred miles to hear another organist play!! Dedication to an Art does not come much greater than that. This piece is simply beautiful, enchanting and almost humbling - they don't come much better than this! God Bless Him.
I have loved this piece ever since I heard it played over & over during Pres JFK's funeral when it was played in the Capitol Rotunda. I contacted the JFK library to verify this & was told by someone there that it did not happen-it was not on Mrs. Kennedy's playlist BUT I KNOW it was! I was 16yrs old & sat for days in front of our tv set watching & mourning w/our nation. I still remember hearing the newscaster saying that it was chosen by Mrs. K. To any Bach lover, how else can I verify this?
'Ooh loving the shades... hee hee.. Bach is the top geezer innit...' Or as I would say... 'Marvellous and beautiful Bach, to calm a weary soul...'*ahh bliss* :0)x
Every time I hear this wonderful piece of music, it makes the world seem a grandly joyous place, it eternally renews afresh my faith in humanity, and fills me with wonder at the glory of the white race.
Love this piece... I told my coworkers how it broke out of the minor part right when the sun crested the clouds and they thought i was THE WEIRDEST DUDE ALIVE. Gotta love my fellow Americans lol...
Too much emotion in this piece. My reactions run the gamut from laughter to tears. trust me, you're not the wierdest dude alive, perhaps you're simply ALIVE!
I used to listen to a superlative version of this cantata by Kirsten Flagstad, on a recording at the University of Oregon, in Eugene. I have since tried to locate a copy of that recording, which was a 33 LP, but can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know of this recording?
Thank you! Just heard Angela Hewitt play it for her only encore Dec. 2009 Herbst Theatre, SF. Was the most memorable piece for me out of the whole program. Just had to listen to it again over and over.
SUNGLASSES. LIKE A MOFOING BAOS!
