  • It seems the posters here who "don't get this" or call the choreography "cheezy" are very young and can't appreciate originality anymore (since all floor routines now look pretty much the same, and have no dance, or very bad dance). This is a classic number. Do you think she would have gotten that audience reaction (and won gold) if the dance movements were "stupid" and the music was "awful?" Come on people.

  • This has to be one of the most iconic gymnastic's routines ever. It's featured in every documentary about gymnastics I've seen. Remember too, less than a year before this, her coach (and mother figure) committed suicide. So the music, and her facial expressions, are almost haunting, in my opinion.

  • the hip movement is great, she is a very sexy gymnast.

  • Svetlana is so sexy that even if his routine was a funeral march would be incredibly sexy.

  • The bizarre choreography was part of her charm IMO!

  • i love her crazy choreography. imo better than the pointless wiggles they do now, which often don't even seem to be in time to the music. Go Svetlana!

  • she's a very sexy gymnast so some of the moves are bound to be a bit sexual.

  • horrible exercise incredible overscored

  • Amazing-looking girl and so beautiful to watch

  • Horrible choreography and horrible music...

  • i loveeeee svetlannaa<3

  • This puts routines from today to shame. I don't care if her tumbling is relatively average. The interpretation is absolutely brilliant. Exquisite.

  • lol last dance move !

  • @xox1234xox well sorry if i had a typo i know that choreography is spelled with an "h"

  • i'm sorry, but I never liked this routine.

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone else find the dance elements in this routine a little bizarre and over-sexual?

  • Respond to this video... Nope!

  • @VoteForMel I guess you haven't seen her teammate Olga lol...she was crazy lol..this is what I miss from Floor today the artistic in artistic gymnastics

  • @LCAmarkymark Do you mean Strazheva? I wouldnt say that.....

  • @tomsk14 yeah Strazheva's floor compared to Bogi's floor...I think Strazheva's was more bizarre.

  • @LCAmarkymark No Strazhevas floor is artistic and expressive, its interpretive dance (which usually means hideous and awful) but i thought strazhevas is a real piece of art --- I dont like this much but who can dislike Bogi?

  • @tomsk14 I can see that I guess...I just feel that Strazheva could have gotten the same score without the dramatic over the top dance...its like you do all that overkill while Bogi and Dudnik do the basics and get into floor final..so not sure but I guess I agree with the judges at this even about Strazheva's floor for me it was too much while Bogi was just enough.

  • @LCAmarkymark Lol I see your point but actually its not got anything to do with taste or content as to how they scored - Almost all, and certainly the soviet gymnasts, were producing 10 standard routines, with a statistically similar level of tumbling and dance - Strazhevas version of what Ive seen contains a bobbly landing and a slight tip out of the double spin - Bogi's routine here has neither of those faults.

Its simply how the routine was performed on the night :-D

  • @tomsk14 true that.

  • @VoteForMel It's the 80's bro

  • @castello669 Haha true, but I haven't seen any other routines from the 80's with such strange choreography. Just my opinion (:

  • @VoteForMel I agree. She was always like this.

  • @VoteForMel yea and it's to the point where it's uncomfortable to watch!

  • @VoteForMel no.....

  • @Daisy0998 , Lol!!!! That is just her dance! U guys must not do gymnastics!!!! Ha ha ha... Can't believe you thought that! LOL! Great tumbling! But sort of weird dance!! Lol!

  • It's good, but I don't understand how it got a perfect 10. I mean at 0:22 in the move she does her leg is bent and her toes aren't pointed.

Though her tumbles are extremely good.

  • @Daisy0998 isnt it a dance element????? the judges dont know the routine lol

  • @Daisy0998 Its a part of the routine, its called dance!

  • There had to be a deduction for that first pass!!

  • worst choreography ever!!!

  • @bik1050 worst comment ever!!!

  • @bertera1614 so you think its good???...i didnt say she was a bad gymnast or anything just tthat the choreography wasnt good

  • @bik1050 Yes sweety..I understood your comment...

  • @bik1050 I think its pretty good. I was a lot better than what I see today for sure.

  • @LCAmarkymark i agree

  • love this routine! I always like the avant garde routines that no one else could pull off. I get how this may not be someone's preference or style, but I love the risk she takes in her choreo.

  • What the hell was the French judge smoking?

  • Not really sure about this coreography....

  • @gymmonkey41 Not sure about this spelling...

  • her expression at :10 is magic.

  • I have never been able to appreciate what is so great about Bogy... a little too long and slow to be nimble, agile and cute - the way I like gymnasts to be.

  • @yangbofan

That's just it: she was tall, but instead of letting it be a disadvantage, she made it her own, and chose passes/music/elements that reflected that. She was also remarkably consistent, overcame the tragic death of her mother-like coach, and had incredible staying power: among many things, being one of the very few to qualify for three Olympic games.

Preference is one thing, but if you can't appreciate why that's considered GREAT, then it's by willful ignorance-- and nothing more.

  • @ImmortalSynn I think Bogi was the last Soviet Great. It's interesting how she capitalised on her artistry rather on difficulty, pre-1992, and when she came back in '96 she was dismounting bars with a double layout, like she did the reverse way from many gymnasts who have super difficulty as pixies and when they reach 18 -19 yrs old they water down their difficulty.

  • @MrMartinportnoy

    ...agree completely.

  • I love her music!

  • she looks like a dancing chicken !

  • 0.6 out of 10 for the music.

  • This has to be the BEST floor routines EVER performed in gymnastics!

  • my God, i love this woman! amazing. so beautiful. this kind of artistry doesn't exist anymore. she's incomparable. gorgeous lines, incredible dancer... everything. i could watch this routine over & over & never get bored. OUTSTANDING! perfect.

  • I love the weirdness of the dance! It's avant garde and interesting and cool. She was really special on floor.

  • The double turn at the end always drives me over the top.

  • DL the audio from this vid at tubepull doht cohm.

  • What's up with the weird dancing? She's pretty and everything but not my cup of tea!

  • lolz and 1 9.95 that one has to be a troll!

  • this is really weird dancing,..

  • no.

  • la coreografia es muy oxentera rafaella carra ,.,.,.,pero la xica es buenisima si le ponia la cucaraxa lo hacia tambien bien para su 1 70 k tiene k tener minimo....de goma

  • that was just superb!! best choreography i have seen, ever!

  • She has perfect legs!! More seriousle she was one of the very best gymnast ever!!

  • Mmmmmm Perfect female Body!!!

  • I think the focus of scoring in that time is about the rotation of saltos. You can see that Bogi never stepped forward in her somersaults, which she does not underrotate it. But the scoring gets increasing strict and harsh, which you have to care about whether your legs and together or so on.

  • 久しぶりに観ました!素晴らしい演技です。女子体操は美しさ華麗さが無くなっては意味がありません。ボギンスカヤ流石です。

  • I've never liked her dance style.

  • Weird choreography???? can you say Avante Garde queen of gymnastics???? Can you get off your effing couch long enough to express the inexpressible through movement...???? This is pure genius. She's dancing to Carmen f****ers! Do you have any culture?Sorry. She is a f***ing champion for life!

  • that was really WEIRD choreography!

  • 10点だけど足開いてるやん。

    インチキ

  • Her movements are slow for the choreogrophy :|

  • omg, what is with the choreography? i couldn't stop laughing, it's so cheesy. and why does she keep making gestures of playing a guitar, when there clearly isn't a guitar in the music? i'm embarrassed just watching this, haha.

  • I wouldn't have lasted long enough to achieve anything anyway. I was simply not mentally tough enough for competition. It terrified me when I realized what was expected of me. I figured if I wasn't perfect, everyone would be furious with me. And that was the end of that.

  • Wonderful, fun choreography to unexpected, festive music. Brilliant performance by a brilliant athlete/artist.

  • I dont mind original choregraphys , actually i really enjoy tjem i dont like todays there very similar and not very pretty , but i dont really like hers. But i must admit shes a great gymnast and im not sure people did such choregraphy at this time , if not then its a double congrats :D

  • Wow, music has come a long way in 20 years. Hers is awful.

  • @kayper54 Um, what do you mean by, "music has come a long way in 20 years?" This is Carribean music which was played much longer ago than that, and it is still played today. The fact that you don't like this sort of music doesn't mean that music has "come a long way." That just doesn't make sense. I wonder what you are driving at?

  • @Vermontist I meant that when I was in gymnastics, we had an old lady playing a piano over on the side. "A long way," meant that you can have just about any kind of music you want with the exception of choral. But I don't like her music. It pokes holes in my eardrums and makes them bleed. I'm not "driving at" anything. I'm sitting at my desk in front of my computer.

  • @kayper54 Ah, thank you for the reply. Now I understand what you meant. :)

  • @Vermontist Sigh. I am old. Very, very old. I remember leotards BEFORE lyrca. Miserable, ugly things. And a very hard floor. And no mat around the springboard. And you could do all the backflips on the bars you wanted, IF you wanted. I hated bars. Grips hadn't been invented then yet, either. ;)

  • @kayper54 I'm pretty old, too. I did gymnastics on 2" mats without springs. We had wooden beam, of course, & oval bars, close together, without cables. They sometimes tipped over. We vaulted straddle jumps & pike jumps. Our leotards were nylon, w/ rubber (or maybe latex?) at the neck & legs. But we had fun. :)

  • @Vermontist It was fun for me at first, when it was a form of "play," but almost as soon as they thought, "Hmm, you might turn out to be pretty good at this, here's your new training schedule," I was like, "Wha...?" And suddenly it was 2 weekdays and Saturday and it wasn't play anymore, it was work, and more than that, it became a chore. The coaches were less nice and I lasted about another year. In the middle of that were the '76 Olympics and Nadia, but by then I wasn't liking it anymore.

  • If I was her I would be jumping up and down screaming!!! I wouldn't be able to quit smiling for months!!!! :) haha

  • @fatFRIESareAWESOME In an IG interview she said that she had felt very wretched when winning the '89 Worlds, because her all-life coach was dead, and she had been trained by a very young coach with whom she had quarrelled shortly before the '89 Worlds. She said she was practically alone throughout these championships and she had noone to share her happines when she stood on the medal stand. I still remember the IG photo she looked so miserable...

  • i think that she should have toned the routine sexyness down. it was a great routine and she got the score she deserved but, it is just not what you would expect from a great gymnast. it sortof looks like she is getting ready to strip or somthing.

  • @justin1gibson If you'll take a look at some other videos of her, you'll notice that she recycles a lot of her floor coordination---- sometimes it works and sometimes it just looks goofy- i blame the music--- i would've nocked off a tenth just because of the annoying music.

  • not worth a perfect 10 medicore tumbling and hideous music and choreo!

  • Am I the only one who gets kind of uncomfortable wtaching her dance? She's an awesome gymnast, but it kind of weirds me out...

  • @moondog1997 - interesting, do you know why you get uncomfortable watching Svetlana dance? Why does it weird you out?

I don't get uncomfortable or weirded-out, I just get mystified at how a 16 y.o. gymnast could perform with such a sophisticated combo of sexiness and grace. Let's face it, you don't expect this quality from a teenaged gymnast with almost no life experience outside of the gym.

  • @svetaswan You're right. I think it's just so strange to me because you DON'T expect it. It's not something you normally see on the gymnastics floor exercise, haha. It's not bad, it's just odd. She's ridiculously talented.

  • i like her 88 performance the best. wat happend to this sport? its all power and muscle, while back then gymnasts had a hypnotic ballerina-esque grace to them. i luv how bogie could hav been a rhythmic gymnast and blended in but instead stuck out in a group of thick thighed short and broad shouldered muscle hounds

  • Bravo!!!, consistent , clean, ...just beautiful.

  • An undeniably well-deserved score.

  • If she did that routine today she'd get quite a few deductions!! she was great for her time though!

  • menos onda q flequillo de chino...diganle le comunique a la cara lo alegre de la cancion...

  • Is it just me ? But I notice that Svetlana has a slight Asian look. Does she has some Asian lineage?

  • @senorsalazar

Her homeland is now called "Belarus." But, during the Cold War, it was the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic or "White Russia." It's possible the Slavic population has a slight Central Asian admixture dating back to the days of the Mongolian occupation (alias "the Golden Horde").

  • @Carycomic Thanks !! Actually I did read somewhere that the Mongols did defeat the Russian Knights in the battle of Kalka and went on to plunder parts of the Crimea hence they must have bred Russian women in the process.

  • @senorsalazar

That historical tidbit had escaped my scrutiny. Thank you for the elaboration. :-)

  • @Carycomic No problem my friend. You did throw some light for me on my initial question, it was the least I could have done for you. Funny isn't it ? We log on to YouTube to see a gorgeous athlete perform and we end up getting history lessons from each other. All thanks to SVETLANA !!!! LOL !!!!

  • @senorsalazar - it's not just you, I, for one, have definitely noticed Bogi's "half-Asian" look. It's not just Bogi - if you look closely at a lot of Soviets/Russians, many look like they have Asian blood, too. It can be something as "subtle" as the facial structure - like Valeri Liukin. And I've always thought that Dmitri Bilozerchev & Natalia Shaposhnikova, just to name two, had that look.

Others have already given a historical context for this phenomenon.

  • @svetaswan Does it have anything to do with the Mongols then?

  • @senorsalazar - yes, from looking at your most recent posts, you know more about the history than I do. :)

IIRC, Russia isn't the only eastern European nation the Mongols reached - I think they must have "touched" places like Bulgaria, Romania, Finland, etc. Ever seen Laura Lepisto? :)

A couple of other examples of Soviets who looked like they had at least a "touch" of Asian blood: Olga Bicherova, Tatiana Groshkova. I even see it in Elena Mukhina...

  • @svetaswan I know more about history that you do ? LOL. I beg to differ my friend. It DEFINITELY appears that sports history seems right up your alley. You certainly know your Russian (or former Soviet) athletes. The funniest thing is though, is that the only reason I searched for this Svetlana video is that I used to have a HUGE CRUSH on her LOL. Not only her, the Ukrainian chick who was Individual All-Round and Floor Exercise Champion from the 1996 Olympics Lilia Podkopayeva.

  • Beautifully perfect, and perfectly beautiful.

  • What happened to her punch front after her double twist?

  • Hubba, Hubba Svetlana !!! No wonder you were called "THE GODDESS OF GYMNASTICS." You had me mesmerized the whole time.

  • I would love to spank her nice ass with my tongue

  • she sucks i found 5 .5 deductions

  • @phonewizz say she suck again keep ur bad opinions 2 ur self and are u even a gymnast?

  • did you youtube fans know that this girl works at igc?she was one of my coaches.

  • I love you

  • awsomeee routine! it deserved a 10 way more then her floor in the AA did [I THINK she got a 10 in the AA, not sure].

and i talk to her at gymnastics camp all the time! weird knowing this is her....

  • @TwisterFlipp95 had at igc also she helped me most on bars

  • oh my god. her landings were... :o

  • Linda Svetlana!!

  • We go to the Svetlana meet every year in Houston! She's very nice and very humble.

  • Beautiful!!!!!

  • i know her i know where she lives wand i know her kids im her little girls best friend no joke i go to her house a lot

  • wow...delusional much?

  • now when the strike happens .ther symptioms of strke seizure etc happen bright lights will blind you for what vision you have left .blurring and the inability of judging distances speeds ect all fail now this is what to do ,bretah at a carl controlled rate, this will slwo the bleeds form blwoing your head off.look down at an angle you should find a field to see through although at a blurred then think ,their will be crahs vercles and speeding verhvles dotn get distarcted by them ,

  • Incredible!

  • u can tell in her eyes at the beginning she's still in mourning for her coach.she actually dedicated this performance to her.

  • One of the most stunningly beautiful women to ever perform on the world stage! What athletic ability, body control, supreme grace, and tantalising facial expressions. I remember being captivated by her when I saw this live, thanks for posting this! What a beauty!

  • Great Im proement ,yes liek a nbc weapon beimng deployed on the square.like a slaute from a wanna be.form trajic to love sex and ma jic sty.yes i wont forgte that one everlkiek a genva trail full of hope yet blood sweetness and terram.mie et par par.what was it then cause it aint going...wcv,2009.

  • well... on all these videos that say perfect 10, its not.... THEY ALL TAKE STEPS ON THEIR TUMBLING PASSES! really, this should of been like.... 9.45.....

  • If you want to be so critical, then post a video of yourself doing it better!

  • They were allowed to take a step back then! (as they still should be.)

  • i hated how in the 1980's they gave 10's like they were going out of style. Like in the 1984 olympic mary lou had about 4 perfect tens. They gave them out so easily after nadia scored the first perfect ten. I really loved how in the 1990's they BARLEY gave out perfect 10's and u really had to EARN them. There were only 2 in the 1992 olympics and only 2 in the 1991 worlds. So in the 1980's they gave out 10's so much that it really wasent special and by tht time ppl refered to 10's as no big deal

  • If it was something a gymnast really had to work for, Miller's AA vault should have been a ten at the 1992 Olympics. Lu Li's uneven bars 10 was well-deserved but Lavinia Milosovici's 10 was kind of questionable (she still deserved the gold though).

  • You can just see all the emotion... facial expression... the soviets were always so good at using facial expression to 'enhance' to mood of the routine

  • that second pass was amazing

  • am i the only person that found that wierd?

  • Her landings are really impressive, so controlled :|

  • to bad a perfect ten doesn't exist anymore...=[

  • I know the highest score i had was 9.75 haha!!!**

  • @spins1221 yea it does, its just extremely hard to get

  • cool tumbling

  • nadia comaneci the best gymnatic in the world

  • Don't beat me up for this, but Bogie's eyes are hypnotic. Want a perect score? Sure. Want my life savings? Here's my PIN.

Bogie's one of my favorite gymnasts ever, not the best, but way up there. But those eyes...it's like Superman's heat vision.

I need to be alone for a while.

  • I loved this routine :)

  • sinjinthule,you are sooo right..

  • @sinjinthule I agree about the eyes. The rest, however..........lmao!

  • by no means did this deserve a ten..

  • I remember her. This girl was a babe. Unlike most others in her sport who look like ugly little boys. She was a woman.

  • She's a real classy dancer gymnast. I like her moves

  • Perfect performance and besides accompanied by another great song: Raffaella Carra's Fiesta!!!!!

  • not perfect - france gave her 9.95!

  • French judges...pffft!

  • There is some weird stuff going on there...doesn't float my boat, but good on her for getting a 10.

  • Whats it called when they are throwing a ball around or maybe using a long ribbon or some thing while they are doing this?

  • Rhythmic Gymnastics

  • Thanks! That is some very interesting stuff to watch.

  • that would be rhythmic gymnastics

  • Are you talking about rhythmic gymnastics?

  • wow were im from its not even out of ten anymore, i feel bad for her for having to do the whole air guitar thing

  • I cringed at the air guitar thing at first, but now I've grown to love it!!

  • finally a gymnast with a curves

  • I always found her to be very attractive...the exotic eyes and the way she moved really got me.

  • I always think she has the strangest shaped body...

  • 4. Tumbling was not very difficult, I know, but at list the routine was DIFFERENT. so, her coreographer had to deal with this like a whole-package..and it was a 10! remembe"r: it was 20 years ago....

  • 3. the dance moves in hands, torso and legs were inspired in Nijiski, the great russian dancer/coreographer..the details in tempo, speed and fingers were great. even the tumbling was in timing with the music.

I have being a gymnastics fan for the last 30 years, and was involved in this sport as a women's floor specialist both coreo & tumbling until 2.002 and had the chance to work with a lot of european trainers and coaches.

  • 2. the dance moves had to do with the story within the song..the lyrics, at that particular time EVERYBODY sang the song in their head at the arena event. that was part of the succes! (more explanations to come..)

  • HOPE EVERYBODY READ THIS NEXT (please forgive me for the long explanation but it's neeeded.)

There are a lot of comments saying "WEIRD"but it's because they can't understand the meaning of it.

1: it's difficult to get it if you're not european, the song it's call FIESTA, by Rafaella Carra..one of the greatest Italian singer divas ever..original song it's in spanish!

  • I think it's great and interpreted well and have always enjoyed with music was actually interpreted. People are often impressed by routines I choreograph, and I think to myself it's not that great, really, I just felt the music and choreographed it to match. Does it not seem like many people can't do that anymore?

  • what´s the name of the music'?????????

    wonderful routine and wonderful music!!!

  • Ughh, i wish those commantaters would shut tu so i could hear the music -_-

  • I used to love gymnastics as a kid. My mom still talks about her once in a while and calls her recalls her as "the girl with the mysterious eyes." She was one of the most elegant gymnasts due to her ballet training. Nastia Liukin and Svetlana B. (and K.) are three of the most elegant gymnasts that have been in the sport.

  • weird weird

    weirdest routine ever

  • that was very interesting, but i did like her tumbling

  • well that was different

  • wierdest dance ever

  • This ruitine
