Now it's about time for US to get rid of their fossile fuel power generating plants (coal!!, oil, natural gas and so on)... USA consumes twice the amount oil per capita compared with England, Spain and France. And consumes 10 times more COAL than France. Sweden where i live only uses 3% fossile fuel! The energy here somes mostly from water power and then nuclear. Germany uses 55% fossile fuel. I don't know about US right now i find a lot of different numbers everywhere... But they use more!
@bosszeroboss it's an electrical car... whether you get electricity from solar panels, wind, hydro, a diesel generator, or fuel cell, the car itself uses electricity to move its wheels.
@bosszeroboss Given the current advancements of producing electricity from new sources, and ESPECIALLY the up coming installation of more of the alternative sources in the next few years, your point is mute.
Um, no, it's not a "mute" point -which makes no sense to the literate- it's a moot point. And the promise of "alternative sources in the next few years" will just convince us all to wait for many years and drive bicycles while those of us who can afford $40,000+ cars plug them into our home outlets and watch our electricity bills skyrocket, as the current president has promised.
The whole thing is obviously a winner. For God's sake, let's not use our own oil.
@emforty2 because you can drive on the battery alone. hybrids cannot, they use gasoline from the get go. This can use pure electricity up to 40 miles, THEN the hybrid technology kicks in
@bigdaddyyc TOYOTA Prius will run on batteries ONLY if the speed is below 35mph albeit at a much shorter range because of its much smaller NIMH batteries, the gas motor ONLY kicks in if you drive above 35mph or when the battery depletes
so the PRIUS DRIVES ON BATTERY ALONE and its a hybrid !!
@emforty2 I'd like to clarify a couple of things. First, we're talking about the chevy volt, which has Li-ion NOT NIMH batteries and these can drive at highway+ speeds on batteries alone for 40 miles. Second, the current toyota prius is a hybrid not an electric vehicle, but toyota has been testing the 2012 TOYOTA Prius (PHEV) which can drive at highway speeds with electricity alone.
@emforty2 I read your post. Ok, simply put... the chevy volt is technically a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and not a battery electric vehicle (BEV). Chevy never claims the volt is a BEV like the Nissan leaf. I was referring to the prius hybrid which cannot drive on highways using electricity alone... the volt can. they don't avoid using the word hybrid, they use it all the time, with the word plug-in...you're looking too much into some conspiracy that doesn't exist.
This is not an electric vehicle, it's a hybrid. It goes 40 miles then uses gas. The EV1 went 90 miles so unless electric motors have gotten worse in the last 14 years this is a downgrade.
GM could do so much better than this..... the fact it still uses gas is proof they are still a sell out to big oil.
They could make a fully electric car that goes 300 miles no problem... sad gm..... shame....
Uh huh . . . whatever. EV1 was an impractical go kart. This is real, this is practical. I know for my own daily commute it means zero oil usage, but if I need to go farther I can pour in some ethanol and be good to go.
"Sell out to big oil" lol I guess I'm a sell out every day.
@XKS99 That's why big oiled payed millions to GM to kill it.
Because it was impractical... right.... the facts have been out on it for years now and the judgement has already passed. The EV1 was revolutionary and killing it was GM's greatest mistake.
The only way for the Volt to succeed is to complete directly with the Prius in price and have completely better quality. if not, I have a good feeling that it will fail.
Why does the Volt need to be 40 grand? At that price, they won't sell, IMO. If it was 25 grand, it would blow the Prius out of the water in sales, which is what GM really needs to do, and now. The Prius starts at 23K, and that's got to be the price range for any viable alternative.
If they could, they would. The lithium-ion battery technology costs 20,000 dollars alone. The Prius does not compare to the electric capability of the Volt.
Let's see, the car isn't as efficient in hot or cold weather. That knocks out a bunch of customers, you charge it in your garage, well that knocks out all condo and apartment people, it's 40k, that knocks out a lot of people, especially all the ones who recently bought new cars in the cash for clunkers. Tiny backseat so mom's are not going to be interested. So, it looks like the target market for the Volt consumer is down to what? 20-30 people? Good luck with that GM! You just love to fail.
It's a revolutionary shift in how an American car is built. Give it time and the prices will come down as the demand picks up for better lithium technology in a competative electric car market. You'll also be saving money on gas and eligible for ~$7500 rebate (or so I read on chevy's page). You can also monitor your car's battery from your phone and send remote starting calls. All this sounds great, lets just hope noone can hack your car and mess with the electric throttle!
@sonofboone - I am not claiming to know whether it could be done or not. But if you can interact with your car via phone, and if there's a remote start feature, there may be vulnerabilities. Hopefully they'll be all taken care of. Too bad Pontiac is gone, they could build a new KITT.
iceman: You are the biggest contrarian. Pruis = recall and it still sucks gas. My round-trip commute is about 34 miles, so I can go to work and back w/o using a drop of gas, just driveline oil. Even when GM has a breakthrough product you find reason to criticize. The USA is making world-class cars and you can't accept it. If you want to argue the hybrid route, then the Ford Fusion is at a better price to results value and looks 100x better than Prius.
40-80 cents per charge? and it would take me to work and back on that? wow. impressively cheap to run this thing. i'm renting, currently, so no garage but in the future this would be a contender.
WTF...40grand for a volt. What are they smoking at Chevy?? And it takes 8 hrs for a full charge. Toyota have been doing this for longer and u can get a Prius for half the price. So the government loan GM our money so they could turn around and fuck us in the ass is that it. Fuck GM or Chevy or whatever...I'll never buy this thing.
Nobody knows what the actual msrp will be it is a rumor that it will be 40,000 and I honestly wouldn't be suprised to see it close to that. 8 hours isnt that bad for a 40 mile distance,if you have a 240 outlet which just about every garage in the U.S. has it will charge in under three hours. And another rumor I have heard is the gasoline engine will get about 49 mpgs so that with the 40 mile battery power is a huge competitor to the prius and the volt also has more power than the prius
to googlepeakoil : thanks for declaring that information to me and i think your info are make sense but do you have an actually source supporting this information i believe that from Chevy Representatives they have to declare that directly to us as consumer because if we are not professional in this engineering but in the mean time we have basic knowledge
BYD from China has a 5 passenger all electric car (E6) that will run 250 miles on a single charge. You can charge it up to 50% in less then 10 MINUTES!!! The Volt has a hard time with it's 40 mile range... which takes for ever to charge. They are planning on selling the E6 in the US in 2011 for half the price of the Volt. I bet you everything GM is sweating electric bullets at this point.
ya but the us does not have the info structure for a all electric car. I live in MI what if i want to go to florda. I will be stuck somewhere in the middle of Ohio with a all electric car. The volt is perfect for anyone that travels less then 40 miles per day and for anyone who wants to go on a long distence trip. For the volt once the battery runs out you can use gas. The US has gas stations not charging stations thats why any all electric car wont work in the US.
i understand your concern who ever that person gives you a thumb down i don't know why ? my question with Chevy here is always about reliability and i wonder how reliable they have mad their battery's ?
Then [which is after 40 miles] the gas engine starts and directly provides electric power, like a generator to the electric motors that propel the vehicle. Its the best 'hybrid' design in my opinion.
considering the Harsh winter and all of use knew how bad battery's obsessed with cold they don't get along. and we don't have a normal low temperature winter it is more than any living human or animal can take and way beyond that so did Chevy give enough test to these battery's ? and by the way from what i have know this car will cost $40.000
@East17A Don't know about that, but you did bring up another point. Heat. Does the volts heater use heat off the internal combustion motor, or from it's electrical power source?
i think that will be from it's electrical power source because i believe if it was off the internal combustion motor i think this will reduce efficiency on gas uses if it was hybrid but in the volt case i think their is no other way except electrical power source because this is the only source of power to keep every thing moving
The battery is heavily insulated to protect from cold temperatures. It also aparrantly has a small heating element to moderate temperatire. Also if it's charghable then most people will be keeping it in a garage. eg. starting from 0C if it's -10 outside.
and every individual has its own logic analyzing things what made me think about this particular point its because the winter we have is really harsh and it did kill people i know for very stupid reasons
YES the "extension cord"...a proprietary device that Must be bought at a GM parts counter! Assuming your car has enough electric charge to reach a GM dealership(Without gas recharge mode). This assumes the dealership has one in stock!!! " Sorry we don't have any in stock right now, but I can order one for you....Hows next Thursday sound?" "If you pay up front....$136.99 I can have it rush shipped here by Monday?" Haven't you had an extension cord fail on you?
@saved2play , It might have spare cells that activate when the pack gets older .. kind of like spare sectors on a hard drive.
But then again, I'd like to be able to use all the cells when the car is new! This whole thing is speculation that I have just come up in my head fyi..
" A standard recepticle" ...not quite, that is a proprietary plug built into the car...what happens when this 'special' plug is lost or fails to function because the conductor inside breaks when it gets run over for the bazillionth time. You won't be able to run down to Home Depot & get just any extension cord......because it takes a "special" plug! Stupid thinking on GMs part....get to thinking Gm ...almost got it, keep trying!
this car will never be just look up "GM Chevy Volt Fails" here on Youtube it couldn't even go up a small hill without staling and then failing to restart all together.
Test vehicles are not real vehicles. It's like saying "Audi's v10 R8 will never be one of the prototypes burnt to the ground!!!" Hey but who knows maybe not testing vehicles is cool. Like when Toyota doesn't do rollover tests, then complains, because it was never mandatory, and thus unfair.
Young man: "That means 60,000 isn't very many vehicles..."
Bob Lutz: "No, I agree with you. I think its a conservative figure, but we need to let somebody screen some of our technology, and lets face it, the only ones who are going to be able to use it [ARE RICH]. "
Young man: "Are you still thinking mid 30's?"
Bob Lutz: "Naw, I think we're figuring just below 40..."

At 40K Chevy won't sell a single Volt in Europe. It should be under 25000 Euro to even get some attention of possible buyers ! (or at 30K or so including a package with a solor cell station to load the battery, so you would drive for free and have a REAL zero emission car)
Unfortunatly the car business doesn't just convert the price. 40.000$ will remain 40.000 Euro or more. Just compare prices from cars in the US to Europe ...
40K WTF!! i could get a brand new camaro for nearly half tht, plus i bet you would be fucked in crash with tht ion battery exploding after about 5 mins
With a $40 grand price tag I think I'ld rather have an Audi......Hey GM why dont you make a auto with a 5hp engine that powers an electric generator?......The car would run on liters of gas not gallons......What a mess!
They will make tons of money because theres those extreme eco hippies that will buy them up... me on the other hand, would have the new camaro instead. >:) hell yeah
This makes no sense. Chevy isn't innovating anything. Don't be fooled people. this was designed IN GERMANY, by the Opal brand. It cost twice as much as a Prius, and cost more per mile to charge it. Not to mention the fact that its going to kill anyone who drives it with the crappy crash rating!
Something tells me this car is gonna be one of the biggest failures from GM ever. Did you know the engine has to operate at 6000 RPMs to achieve 100 HP for the motors? That engine will last no more than three years.
At least this has a gas alternative that charges the motor. Can you imagine people living in apartments (mostly cities) using a long ass extension cord from their top story house down to the street to charge their "all electric cars?"
I think problem is most hybrids are expensive and look like pussy cars. This one looks less shitty on the outside but still has a shoddy interior for a 30k+ vehicle. People who are able to buy cars this expensive could probably care less about fuel efficiency, and the few wealthy environmentalists out there aren't plentiful enough to give GM any real profit. Plus, it's a first generation so no one will want it. It's great that we're trying to help the environment, but this is no real aid.
I'm sick and tired of GM's lies about fuel consumption.
They advertise any number they feel like. It can run 40+ miles on a charge. That means if you keep charging it every 40 miles the fuel consumption is zero.
i expect the average user would certainly consume gas with this but they are not claiming it to be a road trip kind of car. its a daily driver to the office and back, or to the grocery store...
I want to know how much gas it uses on a *long* trip.
Now, I do appreciate GM's efforts to help break the barrier to get cars out of the exclusive petrol club. I'm just ticked off by the misleading numbers they mention.
In Canada for instance, they're starting to advertise it as using 1 liter per 100 km. To get that, you must charge it using an electrical outlet every so many km in order to get that. So that's misleading, because they're not disclosing that.
How lame, trucked it to the auto show, reminds me of a video I saw a couple of years ago of the concept Volt, it was in a garage, the garage door opened, the Volt came out, the garage door closed behind it, it rolled down driveway and into the street and down the street, all downhill mind you, they obviously had people in the garage that pushed it out. If it was so great they would have driven it to the show.
Looks like the illegitimate love child of a Pruis and a Citroën C4. With that said, I actually like the styling. It's a tad much though at 40 big ones.
u customers seem to only buy gas guzzling suv's..when gas was cheap the US public only wanted these and similar vehicles, hense one of many reasons why GM pulled the plug on the sucessful(in terms of the technology gained) EV1only since the last couple years the stupid US public scared shit of $4-$5 gallon of fuel has taken to hybrids and newer technology..Gas WILL never return to $1.50 ..! GM's volt,,, time has come!
"now peddlin this golfcart,LMAO" Many of the EV1's technology/research learned has been incorporated into the VOLT..Read a few trade publications, you will learn something
Hyrdrogen is NOT available to the general public..The infustructure needed would take years to equal gas/diesel stations..The GM Volt would leap frog your Honda cng fcx and render your prius obsolete.. The Volt is proven from the severe -40 of Canada to the 120+ heat of Arizona
Thanks 60 minutes and motor trend for these facts..!
Even being a Honda/Toyota fan, GM has made more strides towards alternative fuel/engine technologies then the two big foreign companies combined! I'm keeping an eye out for the Volt to see how it turns out.
Pretty sure you're a little behind the times. That was from at least 2 years ago, and the car had none of the technology that will actually be in the car. You can find people actually driving the volt technology on youtube today, seems to work pretty well.
This is another video showing the volt traveling no faster than 8 miles per hour (u-turn). The government should force chevron to allow gm to produce the NIMH battery so gm can actually get some speed out of this vehicle to make it a reality. I heard that chevron suckered the patents on the NIMH batteries away from gm, which also forced toyota to stop producing their very successful rav 4 electric vehicle which relied completely on those NIMH batteries.
if you think about it, the $40,000 price is kind of worth it because of all the money your saving in gas. if prices stay where they are, at about $3 a gallon and your car holds about 12 gallons of gas and you fill up once a week, your spending almost $2000 on gas every year. this car pays for itself in 20 years, which is a long time but still something to think about.
the volt will be able to go up to 40miles or 64kms charged... then the 1.5L kicks in and charges it up 16 -20 times so multiply that by 40.. and it comes to 640-800mile on one tank of gas.
if you don't drive that far each day then you can do we the guy said and life with out GAS!! Or 150-170 MPG
Plus now they are putting these system in there new Cadillac Converj and the new HUMMER H3 will be able to do the same now!!
Wikapidea has it all the info on it too! COOL CAR!!
The concept model looked much better. I was ready to buy one if they kept that sporty look. The end product looks like a prius and I know they are looking towards the mass consumer market, but I am not interested in a compact car. Gonna wait for the Tesla to come down in price a little bit more.
they think they can changes a gasoline lead footed AMERICAN. by this volt, will be the saviors of the struggling auto maker. NAIVE!!! trying to revived the old SPARKS they its self put out at its early year over the v8.
having Truck and SUv don't cut bread, butter anymore to many hand in the jars. GM got nothing in market except moving to china!! they said there the auto maker is a boom. AMERICA need to have a tails and not settle for less.
this car should be called the "Holden Volt" and it should have holden braning on it becuase it WAS designed and enginerd in Australia by Holden and its is going to be made in australia...well that bit is what I heard on the news.
y dont they swap the aveo motor and put in a small turbo diesel? oh yea,,, people would probably buy the fucking thing and save the industry... cheers.
You'll get less than 10miles on a full charge if the Temperature drops below 38 degrees... there's going to be alot of pissed off owners once the first winter hits after production begins!
No... but I have a brain in my head! I do work for another car company that produces a much better hybrid than the non-existant Volt. Our cold weather testing on every aspect of the power consumption forces us to be realistic with our claims. I arrived at my numbers by applying standard flow rates to this vehicles approximate weight.
I think there is a problem that is not mentioned. Like with laptop batteries, the Volts batteries will quickly lose the storage capacity and if used everyday the 40 mile range will become more like 20. Also the 40 mile range is probably with radio and conditioner turned off. But its a nice idea.
however, that 1.4l engine doesnt run the car, it acts as a generator which in turn charges the batteries which runs the car. The volt is solely powered by electricity with the gas engine used as a generator. Hybrids run on the gas engine at some point, this one doesnt.
This is a very interesting car, id like to buy one but only if its the right price, id like to see more cars with this technology, if the big 3 use this tech maybe theyll start out selling foregin auto-makers, i can only hope.
The big 3 can outsell foreign automakers if our country would put a big fat tax on every import car and put a quota on how many can be sold in the U.S.
Sounds like something they should start, id like to see the big 3 dominate all other companies from foreign countries, hoepfully theyll start that tax.
thats gonna be hard to outsell the competition as its a moving target they're not sleeping you know like the big3 they are already on their 3rd generation hybrid while GMs volt is still a science project
the prius alone sold 1.75 million units already and almost a million honda hybrids
Damn im was just saying that i like the tech, and even if its a science project, so what? werent all hybrids at one time a science project? i say if it works its going to sell pretty well.
Hybrids allow you to drive as far as you want as long as there are gas stations around.
As for an EV, you're limited to the range of the car unless you have a 75 mile long extension cord or find someone who will let you hang around their garage for 12hours while you charge your car.
"Hondas new 4dr hybrid is coming out next year at $17K msrp
even toyota is scared as it cant sell its $25K prius anymore "
Honda's hybrid technology is quite primitive compared to Toyota's that's why it isn't selling as well as the Prius.
The most attractive thing about the Volt is that for 40 miles, you won't be using a drop of gasoline from the pump which is where the real savings is and since most city commuters drive around under that.
They are coming to NZ and because of our 240v system, will charge in 3 hours. A 40 mile range will see me charging it every 2 days, and as battery life is measured in the number of times they can be discharged and recharged, I would expect a long battery life. Remember it is the cost of the batteries that is driving up the price. That will drop as they shift into mass prodiction, as long as chevron doesn't buy up the patents and kill the battery, like they did to the nickel metal hydride type.
what the hell are they thinking? Yes, this is a great direction for GM. But they aren't going to sell any of these. 40K??? gimme a break! There's no way they'll sell enough to make significant profit. And a 40 mile standard range? The only cities where you drive 40 miles or less are small towns.
i would love to see gas cars gone its over a century old, but lets face it it has to be reliable and most importantly the COST!! if they try to sell it 40k+ it will fail certainly max price should not pass 30k
New technology will always be expensive at first. When plasma tvs first came out, they were $15,000 - $25,000. Now you can buy one for $700.
If you can't afford $40,000 GM will be fine, there are others who will buy it I'm sure. Since it won't be mass produced until the technology gets cheaper, it'll sell well.
There are no savings with the Volt. The price is estimated at $40K to $48K. Automobile critics have dubbed it "Grandma's electric vehicle." The production Volt is hideous and bland. Nissan has already developed an electric car that gets TWICE the mileage as the Volt.
is that so. try googling for "Toyota RAV4 EV" and you will see that Toyota had a better one more than ten years ago, already in production, on sale and in use in the real world. They were selling like hotcakes until they got shut down due to patent owned by big oil - aint that strange.
Now until you know what you're talking about, perhaps you should stop shooting your mouth off too
And what are you suggesting I'm pulling out of my ass? What did I say that was incorrect? They were in succesful production and selling well, and ten years later GM is hyping this lame contender as a new development?
Read up on the RAV4 EV and get educated. Go on, at least look at the wikipedia page, that wouldn't be too hard for you would it? If it is, maybe you could just find some videos here on youtube. Wouldn't want to strain your brain...
You forgot to tell me what the propaganda was, or what I have said that was incorrect.
You said "So far there is NOTHING like the Volt by any other manufacturer closer to production." And I showed you that you were wrong, and also being hypocritical for saying that people were pulling things our of their ass, when that was exactly what you were doing :)
price??? do you have any idea the money you'll save on gas a year!? that car will pay for itself in no time

44pullups 2 years ago
WTF...40grand for a volt. What are they smoking at Chevy?? And it takes 8 hrs for a full charge. Toyota have been doing this for longer and u can get a Prius for half the price. So the government loan GM our money so they could turn around and fuck us in the ass is that it. Fuck GM or Chevy or whatever...I'll never buy this thing.
iceman5815 2 years ago
Nobody knows what the actual msrp will be it is a rumor that it will be 40,000 and I honestly wouldn't be suprised to see it close to that. 8 hours isnt that bad for a 40 mile distance,if you have a 240 outlet which just about every garage in the U.S. has it will charge in under three hours. And another rumor I have heard is the gasoline engine will get about 49 mpgs so that with the 40 mile battery power is a huge competitor to the prius and the volt also has more power than the prius
cbrunner8331 2 years ago
to googlepeakoil : thanks for declaring that information to me and i think your info are make sense but do you have an actually source supporting this information i believe that from Chevy Representatives they have to declare that directly to us as consumer because if we are not professional in this engineering but in the mean time we have basic knowledge
East17A 2 years ago
BYD from China has a 5 passenger all electric car (E6) that will run 250 miles on a single charge. You can charge it up to 50% in less then 10 MINUTES!!! The Volt has a hard time with it's 40 mile range... which takes for ever to charge. They are planning on selling the E6 in the US in 2011 for half the price of the Volt. I bet you everything GM is sweating electric bullets at this point.
OneOfaKind949 2 years ago
whats the chinese car?
cbrunner8331 2 years ago
ya but the us does not have the info structure for a all electric car. The US has gas stations not charging stations thats why any all electric car wont work in the US.
chans686 1 year ago
did you not know it uses gasoline to re charge the battery in those situations??

i understand your concern who ever that person gives you a thumb down i don't know why ? my question with Chevy here is always about reliability and i wonder how reliable they have mad their battery's ?
East17A 2 years ago
So let's say this. What happens if your on the road with your Volt and you ran out of battery power, what happened then?
genestarwindjf80 2 years ago
Then [which is after 40 miles] the gas engine starts and directly provides electric power, like a generator to the electric motors that propel the vehicle. Its the best 'hybrid' design in my opinion.

considering the Harsh winter and all of use knew how bad battery's obsessed with cold they don't get along. and we don't have a normal low temperature winter it is more than any living human or animal can take and way beyond that so did Chevy give enough test to these battery's ? and by the way from what i have know this car will cost $40.000
East17A 2 years ago
@East17A Don't know about that, but you did bring up another point. Heat. Does the volts heater use heat off the internal combustion motor, or from it's electrical power source?
8ballbreakandrun 2 years ago
i think that will be from it's electrical power source because i believe if it was off the internal combustion motor i think this will reduce efficiency on gas uses if it was hybrid but in the volt case i think their is no other way except electrical power source because this is the only source of power to keep every thing moving
East17A 2 years ago
@East17A
The battery is heavily insulated to protect from cold temperatures. It also aparrantly has a small heating element to moderate temperatire. Also if it's charghable then most people will be keeping it in a garage. eg. starting from 0C if it's -10 outside.
googlepeakoil 2 years ago
and every individual has its own logic analyzing things what made me think about this particular point its because the winter we have is really harsh and it did kill people i know for very stupid reasons

At 40K Chevy won't sell a single Volt in Europe. It should be under 25000 Euro to even get some attention of possible buyers ! (or at 30K or so including a package with a solor cell station to load the battery, so you would drive for free and have a REAL zero emission car)

So that would be infinite miles per gallon.
a1mint 2 years ago
sounds pretty simple to me, how is that a lie?
i expect the average user would certainly consume gas with this but they are not claiming it to be a road trip kind of car. its a daily driver to the office and back, or to the grocery store...
usmcboyer 2 years ago
I want to know how much gas it uses on a *long* trip.
Now, I do appreciate GM's efforts to help break the barrier to get cars out of the exclusive petrol club. I'm just ticked off by the misleading numbers they mention.
In Canada for instance, they're starting to advertise it as using 1 liter per 100 km. To get that, you must charge it using an electrical outlet every so many km in order to get that. So that's misleading, because they're not disclosing that.
a1mint 2 years ago
will some drives won't be able to charge it after driving 40 miles. So they would have no choice but to use the gas engine
qiranwang 2 years ago
Just figured out how they calculate the 230 mpg number.
What they did is calculate how much money in electricity it uses when running on just electrical.
They then calculate how much gas they could have bought for it.
Hmmm, fair enough, I guess...

The government should force chevron to allow gm to produce the NIMH battery so gm can actually get some speed out of this vehicle to make it a reality. I heard that chevron suckered the patents on the NIMH batteries away from gm, which also forced toyota to stop producing their very successful rav 4 electric vehicle which relied completely on those NIMH batteries.

if you think about it, the $40,000 price is kind of worth it because of all the money your saving in gas. if prices stay where they are, at about $3 a gallon and your car holds about 12 gallons of gas and you fill up once a week, your spending almost $2000 on gas every year. this car pays for itself in 20 years, which is a long time but still something to think about.

yes because its a HYBRID and GM refuses to call it one

however, that 1.4l engine doesnt run the car, it acts as a generator which in turn charges the batteries which runs the car. The volt is solely powered by electricity with the gas engine used as a generator. Hybrids run on the gas engine at some point, this one doesnt.

Close, but no cigar.

"The only cities where you drive 40 miles or less are small towns."
Majority of the people at my work place drive a total of 30 miles round trip, work to home.
For people like me, this means I may never have to pay for gas at the pump, most of the time.

i would love to see gas cars gone its over a century old, but lets face it it has to be reliable and most importantly the COST!! if they try to sell it 40k+ it will fail certainly max price should not pass 30k

"max price should not pass 30k"

"Nissan has already developed an electric car that gets TWICE the mileage as the Volt."
and which car is that and how much does it cost?
You don't know because it doesn't exist.
GM bashing idiots just shoot off their mouths and start pulling things out of their asses.
So far there is NOTHING like the Volt by any other manufacturer closer to production.

i'm guessing this is spam. he's just posting the same thing on everything on the volt.

is that so. try googling for "Toyota RAV4 EV" and you will see that Toyota had a better one more than ten years ago, already in production, on sale and in use in the real world. They were selling like hotcakes until they got shut down due to patent owned by big oil - aint that strange.
Now until you know what you're talking about, perhaps you should stop shooting your mouth off too

"try googling for "Toyota RAV4 EV"
Do you know the difference between an electric car and a PLUG IN hybrid? You don't.
"already in production, on sale and in use in the real world."
Last time I checked, NO Toyota dealers sold them. They were LIMITED releases and LEASED to ENERGY COMPANIES as propaganda.
"They were selling like hotcakes until they got shut down due to patent owned by big oil - aint that strange."
Quit pulling things out of your ass, idiot.

Propaganda? Propaganda for what, do tell.

"Read up on the RAV4 EV and get educated"
Hey idiot, again, do you know the difference between an electric car... and a fucking HYBRID?
"look at the wikipedia page"
That explain why you're a dumb stupid moron. Wikipedia... Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!!!!11111

Sorry if that's too hard to deal with :)
